I don't mean movies that were favorites. But rather the movies that changed how you watched movies.

Probally "Death to Smoochy"

It kinda made me think beyond the simple dialogue of the characters and try to imagine them in the greater world, and how they would fit in...

Pretty cool really, but at the same time, kinda annoys me now when i see total complete wanky characters, but, eh, Hollywood, Americans, just imagine em in America, homicidal maniac with a gun, gotta be a texan! =P

"To Kill A Mockingbird" made me appreciate cinema as an art form for the first time really, I think. It made me want to watch more movies made before I was born.

"Amadeus" showed me the true power of classical music and also how powerful music can be when used right in a film.

"Lord of the Rings" showed me how fantasy can be done will in film and be taken seriously as storytelling also. It made me think about other fantasy books I like and how they could be adapted to the screen.

Broken Flowers, totally. That movie pulls a fast one on you at the end, and you'll be pissed off as hell unless you figure out exactly what trick Jarmusch pulled on you, and why you probably deserved it. Then you applaud him so being so damn crafty, and applaud Bill Murray for pulling it off.

I saw the movie "Memento" just once and I now follow plots a good amount better than I ever did before. I'm not sure what I do differently now, I just can follow crazier stuff more easily now.

I felt exactly the same way about Waking Life.

Eraserhead was another one that got me to more or less write off weirdness for weirdness' sake, though to be fair, I don't totally hate all the films of Guy Maddin.

As for completely changing the way I watch movies...I think that award would go to Jacob's Ladder.

Casablanca changed the way i view love forever

Feast changed the way i look at horror movies evera gain, haha

oh, and Cinema Paradiso changed how i saw films as a form of beauty in some circumstances

Gone with the Wind.

It helped me become more selective in my movie watching since I lost 4 hours of my life on the most overrated film of all time.

Amen to Amelie and To Kill A Mockingbird.
Also, Twelve Angry Men. So confined and claustrophobic and brilliant. It's really just someone talking for an hour and a half, but it is one of the best films I've ever seen.

I can usually do that too. I remember ruining the Sixth Sense in the theatre by blurting out the "twist" twenty minutes in.

Oddly enough, the suprise ending of Dark Water through me for a loop.

Faster Pussycat Kill Kill played at a theatre here in the twin cities and we missed it. Noone seems to carry it.

Tampopo is a beautiful essay about the being a gourmand. The movie appears at first very episodic, but the thread continues uninterupted, from the opening scene to the assasination to the closing credits. It made me look past what is happening in an individual scene and see what else they mean as a whole.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2

Quentin opened my eyes to the complete and utter BEAUTY that violence can have. These two movies are artistically brilliant.

personally i think resivoir dogs is more revolutionary and original and eye opening than either of the Kill Bills. The Kill Bills were this homage to all these genres the artist loved, amalgamated into this weird pseudo-fantasy, which was really awesome and original in the sense that it felt so familiar.

Resivoir Dogs on the other hand was this beautiful exercise in minimalistic story telling. I mean there was maybe a half dozen sets total, and 90% of the movie is guys talking in a warehouse. It's the perfect indie film. It opened my eyes to a new form of story telling and the fact that, yeah, you don't always have to show instead of tell, as long as the telling is really really interesting.

Reservoir Dogs is excellent. I wanted to try and put it off as a stage play in highschool, for a while. It shows you exactly what you can do with so very little if you're willing to try. And if you happen to be something of a genius.

On minimalism of a different sort, it's been a while since I saw it, but Birds shifted scary movies for me a lot. Comparatively, it's nothing like the ring or the grudge, it's got minimal shock scariness to it, but it's still pretty creepy and unnerving.

Incidentally, Faster Pussycat won't actually change the way you view film too much, but it was groundbreaking in it's time. Imagine seeing Thelma & Louise for the first time, except also imagine that women up to this point in film had only ever been love interests or anything more than passive characters. Also imagine that sexism is still rampant. And then imagine Thelma and Louise have some real evil in them.
Oh, and they're way hotter, too.

American History X. I was completely blown away by that film. It definately changed what I look for in a movie in terms of pacing, story, and character developement. It was so raw and everyone was good in it (aside from Ethan Suplee, who, while I love as Randy, was basically like playing a racist Frankie from Boy Meets World) Just a great movie with a strong message.

exposure to films like fight club, boondock saints, donnie darko, requiem for a dream, kill bill, etc. has gradually made me more and more cynical, with respect to the way I watch film.

and i'm aware that as much as some fans of those movies are fulfilling the stereotype of "20-something whose perception was like, totally changed by this one film," i am fulfilling the stereotype of "20-something who is playing the obnoxious 'it's popular so therefore i can't like it' game."

although petty elitism has allowed me to seek out and watch a whole bunch of cool movies that are not-so-popular, so i guess i break even with the existential guilt of recognizing my own bullshit.

Primer. I highly recommend everyone who can find it procure a copy. the film was made for 2000 dollars, as a first time production for the creator, Shane Carruth, who wrote, cast, edited, played the lead, scored, filmed, directed, everything, he did it all. while there are clearly some flaws that make the movie confusing after a first watch (that do albeit become clearer as you watch it more) you can see the true incredible nature of minimalist filmmaking.

I just got home from seeing Darren Aronofsky's new film "The Fountain." and it definitely falls under this category. I know that the critics panned it. Personally I thought it was nothing short of complete and utter briliance. There were moments in that movie that I just wanted to curl up and cry. It's quite definitely worth checking out. I describe few films as being perfect, but this is one of them.
