Fun ways to kill your computer...
« on: 14 Oct 2006, 04:51 »

Once again, my boredom has overtaken me. So here we go!

1) Go to the Task manager and randomly kill processes.
2) Remove all but 256 mb of RAM, overclock your graphics card, and run Half-Life 2.
3) Install Linux. (Oooh, sick burn!)

Please note that a) I'm a poet, not a technician, and b) i suck.

Feel free to add to the list.

Another really bad idea; play around in your case without grounding yourself.  Also, overclocking anything if you don't know what you're doing is a bad idea.

Linux is only an iffy idea if you want to run dual-boot on the same hard drive.  I'm running XP and Suse 10, each on a seperate hard drive, and life is good.  No worries.

I get fresh copies of Vista in the mail, so I dual boot them. But then I get the shits because Steam / ATI Catalyst / whatever doesn't work, so i just format my partition and use it to store FRAPS output.

Dual-boot Vista, then go back into XP, fill your Vista HDD with batch files that do nothing but delete random Vista files, and run Vista again.

Would that actually work?

Write to a null handle on a machine without protected memory (a pre-OSX Mac, for example). If you get lucky and hit the right part of memory you can get quite spectacular crashes, complete with graphical and/or sound effects.

NTLDR :( is installed on the MBR of sda. I just mount /boot as a seperate partition (HDA1) and tell bios to use the PATA drive as the first boot device. It soughts out a lot of the hassles. I'll probably ditch the old hard drive eventually. but it's so fun bragging about have 800gb of hard drive space :)

When I was in grade 7, some friends and I found a Macintosh 128K in a storeroom at school. We took it home, threw it off my two-storey house, and proceeded to demolish it with four-foot sledgehammers.

I still remember the day with pride.

Also, the easiest way to break your system - use Gentoo, and not be a freaking expert on dependencies.

No, it won't.  Your computer will just shut off.  Thermal protection is so 1998.  (2003 in the case of AMD, fuckers.)

Take a 40mm fan, ziptie it to a nVidia TNT2, remove the two power wires from the 3-pin connector, and put the wires over the correct pins on the fan power connector on the card.

While the machine is running.

Yeah, um, I sorta fried the CPU via the chipset.

Luckily, it was a Pentium MMX 233 that was top-locked, so it wasn't worth anything.

Take it to the shooting range.  Because shooting shit is fun.

Indeed.  What's your weapon of choice?  I personally like a .357 magnum... thing goes boom!

Back on topic.

1. Learn 80286 assembly (optional... only if you want to know what this baby does beforehand)
2. Boot MS-DOS on any PC
3. at the C prompt, type: debug <enter>
4. enter the following exactly as written:

Code: [Select]
a
Mov dx,9000
Mov es,dx
Xor bx,bx
Mov cx,0001
Mov dx,0080
Mov ax,0301
Int 13
Int 20
g

5. Make sure all disks have been removed from their drives, and reboot.

Enjoy...

Quote
NON-SYSTEM DISK OR DISK ERROR, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS [ENTER]

And... another one from personal experience... this time for a Macintosh 128 or 512.

1. unplug computer and open case.

2a. Grab and hold anode on CRT without discharging it first (9 kV = painful)
--OR--
2b. take soldering iron, and melt your way through a RAM chip.

3. Close case, plug computer in, and switch power on... let the fun begin.

HL2 is actually a very scalable engine.... i managed to run it on a laptop with 1GHz processor, 256 MB of RAM and integrated graphics.

anyway.... one fun thing to do with AMD chips is overclock.... then remove the heatsink and fan

Note that this only applies to all Athlons (and older, such as K6) before the XP, and some Athlon XPs. (IIRC, XPs depend on the motherboard to have part of their thermal protection.)

All K8s have a built-in protection circuit.

I can't believe no one has mentioned my favorite way to make a computer very unhappy.

Open up your case.  Get a bottle of Windex, make sure the sprayer is not set to "OFF."  Start spraying every single inch of the innards of the case, until the bottle is empty.  Given time to dry, your computer probably will not work anymore.  Probably.

you know, there's some website that lists tech support stories, and a lady actually took apart her computer and cleaned all the parts with soap and water and put it back together (probably the wrong way, too), because someone told her to clean up her computer.  and then called to ask why this wasn't working.

That's almost as bad as the guy who called tech support, demanding to know why his computer wasn't working... and the techie couldn't figure out what was wrong, until he managed to learn the guy couldn't tell him what was on the monitor because the monitor wasn't working, either... because the power was out.

One time at work, 10101110 and I as well as a co-worker/friend of ours destroyed our old coffee pot with a Large Iron Pole and some random gigantic garden tool.? And then about a week later, we destroyed our news director's old computer with the same tools.

The best part is that our friend now has a video of me on her camera phone, wielding this gigantic garden tool and going for the 180 arc from over my back and smashing it downward and forward... and missing the coffee pot entirely, smacking the whole damn tool into the ground.? CLANG.? Maybe I was the tool, that day.

Buy a video card from a little known manufacturer called "Pine Multimedia" then run Counter-Strike for 2 days straight....max settings no CPU instruction sets on (forcing the load to the video card) The card will eventually go out, and when it does it will take the AGP slot out and the PCI slot next to it. Then take said fucked Video Card to your Local Computer Science department, ask the Dead therein if you could play in one of the labs to trouble shoot your pc's componants....Yeah I destroyed 3 perfectly good pc's with that video card. That was an awsome card...I think my friend still has the plaque we mounted it on. The engraving on the plaque was "Video Card of Doom
Victim List
Intel Pentium 4 1.2 ghz
AMD Thunderbird
AMD Athalon XP"

It was also a running dorm joke.....to lay said plaque on someone's desk "You're Next"

Probably not that funny unless you were there.

oooh i know an awesome way!

let your computer run for 3 days straight. Then stuff chicken casserole into the disket drive.then  put in a cookie into the cd drive. Jab theusb slots with a sturdy pencil, plug the keyboard out cmash the cpu with it.Finally, take off the  casing, pour water into the motehrboard and hard disk while the computer is running!

I actually did this before with an old windows 95 computer. It was too figgin slow and had a permanent virus.So... since we co0uldnt sell it, i did this.and the comp went all haywire and things poped up and stuff. Then i smashed it with my moms hiking cane and it went to the blue screen of death on the monitor! Me, my dad and my sister did this!

man it was so awesome.Lastly, we threw it out into the dumpster...

Then one day, me and my dad were going thru town and saw this one house, i saw thru the window...That guy had the same exact computer with the moniter mouse and keyboard....And he was typing something into it that looked like windows XP...

1) Plug the computer into a faulty outlet, so that it randomly gets unplugged.

2) Shut the computer off every time you get debt on City of Heroes.

The result is fun. That's how my brother killed his computer :D

The following are all taken from my time as a computer tech back home in Whitehorse (AKA Really Freakin' North, Canada)
1) Unplug your hard drive while the computer is running.
2) 'Viruses are just a lie by software companies to get my money.'
3) Actually, just living north of Whitehorse is just a good way to kill your computer.

my favorite, introducing my tower to senor mallet

I agree!! Though I had much better luck with an 8lb sledge!! :)

The most fun way to break anything is with a hammer...or a sledge hammer if its available!!!

Bascally the biggest hammer you can find

Exactly!!

Though while the sledge is always a fun thing.......the most effective tecnique is to place it behind the wheel of your vehicle befoe you leave for work!
