What do I do?
« on: 15 Oct 2006, 22:34 »

I have 30 free itunes songs, but they expire 10/17, I don't know what to buy.  I'm an new fan to indie music so my collection is fairly small.  Anyone have suggestions?

I think we should all suggest one song each. That way you get a bit of variety and you can pick and choose what sounds interesting to you.

I will suggest 'Young Folks' by Peter Bjorn and John. It's a pretty pop boy/girl duet by a band of punctuation-shy Swedes. It has a really, really great whistle hook which will get stuck in your brain.

Broken Social Scene - Fire Eye'd Boy as it is a great intro to BSS a band you should definately check out if you new to indie.

"The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders, Pt. I: The Great Frontier / Pt. II: Come to Me Only With Playthings Now" - Sufjan Stevens

It's my favorite song by him, at least.

Saeglopur - Sigur Ros

(The forum no longer likes accents?  The real title has an accent over the 'o' and the 'a' and 'e' are joined.)

Great song off of a good album.  Good intro to post-rock, and other experimental stuff.  Also: S?gl?pur = Fucking awesome live.  Its a pity that iTunes doesn't have Agaetis Byrjun, but Takk... it pretty good too.

Valley_Parade didn't indicate a specific song, so I'll do it for him: "King Medicine"

And my suggestion is Jawbreaker- "Condition Oakland"

My current stuff is 99.9% classic rock.

The only indie stuff I have is The Shout Out Louds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, some Sleater-Kinney, and Stephen Malkmus.

Ignore the rest of the album though - that one songs shines above it all. It's not unlike Shout Out Louds, which made me think of it, plus I have the album on now...

I know I've already posted but time is running out so I think for any new indie collection Iron & Wine should be mandatory so I'd suggest -

Iron & Wine - Fever Dream,

Skip that one Silver Mt. Zion song I told you, and just get the whole "Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward" album...it's beautiful, and sad, and just freaking amazing.  I like this album better than anything else that group of musicians has done, including Godspeed You! Black Emperor's catalog.

now now, let's not get so excited here. "Born Into Trouble..." is indeed a great album, but I don't think it's better than GY!BE's Yanqui U.X.O.

To be technical, I never actually said it was BETTER, I just said I liked that album more...and for some reason, Yanqui U.X.O. is the one GY!BE that I haven't been able to completely get into...I absolutely love the rest of their stuff, but for some reason when I try to listen to that album, my music ADD kicks into overdrive...

Musical ADD cannot possibly override "Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls". Listen to that til you love it, then conquer the whole album.

PS. Why's the singin in SMZ gotta suck such a bad musicock?

That is some of the most atrocious warbling I have heard in my life, especially on Horses In The Sky...I just can't picture ANY other voice working in that setting...I think if you put a "good" singer to that backdrop, it would lose something in translation...this is just how I listen to SMZ, of course, but the thing that draws me to that band is how every song sounds so mournful, and broken, and desolate...Efram's voice conveys that so perfectly.  You couldn't be more right that he's terrible, but in context I think it's perfect.

I 2nd these that Khar mentioned, especially that New Model Army track, it's brilliant. What swell music taste you have!

I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to indie music as well, at least any indie music that was released in the past 6 or 7 years or so. I basically went on an indie hiatus since I was somewhat disenchanted and disinterested in so much that was being recorded and released, and other genres completely dominated my record collection. I regret it now.

I really like the song "Wake Up" by The Arcade Fire right now though. ;)
