So.....whatchu guys think of TMBG?
robert g:
I'm a big fan of the first four They Might Be Giants albums, and their sixth album Factory Showroom (I'm not a big fan of John Henry, and I think they're running out of ideas these days now).

It may just be a collection of individual hooks that they probably just couldn't work into songs of their own songs, but those individual hooks are still rather catchy. However, the rest of the album suffers from a small handful of bum tracks and a not-so-good song order. Still worth listening to, though. And it's a hell of a lot better than...

What are you smoking? I personally think that Apollo 18 as one of the best albums of the 90s. It has most of their best lyrics ever, and the sounds/ambience/production is perfect given the whole space/NASA theme going on with the album art, and "Space Suit." "Mammal," "Spider," "Which Describes How You're Feeling," "Hypnotist of Ladies." Hell man, those are some really friggin' great songs. It's one of the few albums I can love from top to bottom.
You're right about Fingertips. Most of it was hooks and tiny songs that they couldn't turn into real songs. I think most of them were originally on Dial-A-Song, too. Do you know that you're supposed to listen to the album on Shuffle mode so that the Fingertips parts are all over the place? I never tried this, maybe I will tonight.
Lincoln's production: Most of it, save for a few overdubs like the clarinet on "Cowtown," and the stand-up bass and drums on "Lie Still, Little Bottle" was in fact, the Johns' crappy Casio synth (though this is far more obvious on the self-titled album, as Lincoln had a better studio if I recall).
I'm actually surprised that out of all the New York bands Brian Eno could have taken an interest in, he showed none for TMBG. Though to be fair, Lincoln came out in 1988 and by then Eno was up in Canada with Daniel Lanois and U2. TMBG though still had some Eno-ish elements to them (the fact that they saw their crappy synth as a studio-with-keys reeks of Eno's kind of thinking, etc.).

It may not be on the same level of awesome as Lincoln or Flood, but it still contains many of the same elements that made those two albums so damn good while still retaining the rock band format they've been jamming with -- to lesser results -- for the past 12 years. Even the lyrics are clever enough for people of all ages to enjoy! I'm going to take a wild guess and say that one or both of the Johns had a kid or two, and was/were suddenly inspired to write good music again.

i really liked this record. i was doing prac teaching with a 6th grade class and used one of the songs to teach the kids about call and response patterns ("i am not your broom").
they liked it because it was funny. i liked it because they actually did some work. everybody won that day.
the singer from the get up kids has also started up a"kids" music band called the terrible twos. very awesome. i like their song 'the math stomp'.
Slick:
THE SUN IS A MASS OF INCANDESCENT GAS, A GIGANTIC NUCLEAR FURNACE, WHERE HYDROGEN IS BUILT INTO HELIUM A TEMPERATURE OF MILLIONS OF DEGREES!
THE SUN IS HOT THE SUN IS NOT A PLACE WHERE WE COULD LIVE,
BUT HERE THERE'D BE NO LIFE WITHOUT THE LIGHT IT GIVES
WE NEED IT'S LIGHT WE NEED IT'S HEAT THE SUN LIGHT THAT WE SEE
THE SUNLIGHT COMES FROM OUR OWN SUNS ATOMIC ENERGY
