What did he do?

My boyfriend?  Apparently he downloaded the source code for Transmission (the client) and changed some piece of code that tells the server "I am Transmission!"  to say to the server "I am XUIO!"  *shrug*

I wouldn't be so upset about it if the rules had actually said "Hey, Transmission is one of the clients that's not allowed" because there is a list of banned ones.  But it's not.

But yeah Kai is right.  I'd heard bad bad news about ever needing help or having to talk to or deal with the mods.  The worst thing in the world is a nerdy indie kid with power.

Well the thing is, if you try to download a torrent from OiNK with transmission, it will say "Transmission is not allowed, please use a different client", and once you switch your client, everything will be fine.

Your boyfriend tryed to trick the server into letting him use Transmission, which has a problem with upload bad blocks.

*shrug*  Like I said, I honestly don't know very much about this stuff.  I understand now that it wasn't him just "fixing" it, but I also don't see why they couldn't just say "OK, well, we'll give you a warning but if you use the right client we won't ban you."

Cuz I really was contributing and uploading quite a bit.  My ratio was already above 1 and I had pushed about 6.5G, including uploading 2 new torrents.

Oh well.  I also understand that there's no incentive for them to be nice or understanding because there's 1000 other people who are waiting in line to take my place.

I was thinking of asking for an invite, but it seems like a hell of a lot more trouble than it's worth.  I'll stick with demonoid.

yeah, i would agree with you. the admins at invite-only torrent sites tend to be elitist snobs, but we just have to deal with them :-/

Yeah, as totally sad and slightly enraged that I am about the way it all went down, I can honestly say that if I had the option of going back, I'd do it in a heartbeat.  Their power is in the amazing draw of their product.

I have had only good experiences with Oink so far, and the ods have been helpful. I guess you had bad luck.

Indietorrents, however, is one tracker where I'm scared shitless of fucking up.

That was more directed at the poster below you, who still only has a post count of one.  And no, I don't have an invite, but really, I don't want one.  I can get plenty of music other ways.  Maybe one day I'll request one, but for now, I'm fine.

And, of course, we have another poster with one post asking for an invite.  Just a tad annoying, no?

not really, because that means that if people have free invitations, that they can get passed out, which is kinda the point of this thread.

Well the fact of the matter is that if you know enough about bittorrent to make your client fake its ID, then you should know that it's a really stupid thing to do. From Oink's perspective you were trying to deliberately cheat the system and thus they banned you straight away.
It may very well been your boyfriend who did it, not you, but that doesn't negate the fact that it was bannable offense. There's no reason to download the Transmission source and then edit it send fake client IDs. It would have been about a hundred times easier to just download a proper client.

In conclusion, I don't know what the fuck your boyfriend was playing at, but I would advise you against letting him do it again.

I might seem a little harsh, but you need to realise that Oink were entirely justified in instantly banning you. If you realise that it was a big deal not unfair mods, then hopefully you won't do it again. I'll talk to some people about getting you back on if you make sure you get a proper client. What was your username on Oink?

I do absolutely understand that it was a big deal to them, or else they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of banning me.  And I was/am definitely willing to go with the right client now that I understand what my boyfriend did was against the rules.  I had offered to switch to another client that night in the Oink help room, but I know they had no reason to trust that I would actually do so, so they said that wasn't acceptable.

I'm sorry if I was coming off more indignant than what i should be.  I do understand now that I was breaking the rules.  I just felt the punishment was slightly more harsh than the crime, because I'm totally willing to get a proper client.  If you could talk to them, that would really, really be the kindest thing.  My username was brandienaked.

Well according to by Mod contacts, faking client IDs is up there with hospitalising Oink himself by beating him with his server in terms of never ever getting unbanned. This guy is a real good friend of mine, and he said there was no way he could reinstate my account if I was banned for that, let alone someone I was vouching for just because she posts on the same forum as me.

Your uploads and ratio and all that sort of thing are pretty much gone for good, but I could just invite you again. You did a lot better on the ratio than everyone else I've ever invited, so it seems a real shame to be permently barred for one (albeit fairly major) mistake. They don't IP ban or anything crazy like that, so use a different email address and it should be all good. Just PM me.

I would love an invite for a good indie torrent site.  I don't have crap to offer but I have a great connection and always try to seed to 200%.

Actually, anyone who invites me will get free drinks if I ever meet them in a bar.

I was searching for some information and stumbled upon this thread.
The following two quoted statements were written in back to back posts

Quote from: MilkmanDan
... They don't IP ban or anything crazy like that, so use a different email address and it should be all good. Just PM me.

The above statement indicates that if you've been banned from OiNK and you can get an invite, as long as you use a different email address,
there are no problems and you're back as a new member in good standing.  Or is this only the case if you have a contact like MilkmanDan who knows someone within OiNK?

I fixed some of the puctuation in the following statement that somewhat suggests something else entirely.

Quote from: d0p3y2k4
so what i am trying to say is dont give your invites out to anybody that has been banned. Anybody can say they are new to oink, but can mess up your account by inviting them

I know a couple of users who've been recently banned from OiNK.  One of them thinks in addition to another email address, that he needs to migrate to another ISP and perhaps change additional settings in order to attemp to use another invite.

Any clarification would be appreciated.

I can check tomorrow for shure, but as far as I know OiNK IP bans major offenses (Faking client IDs, ratio faker thingies, etc), but doesn't for minor things like rato issues. However, my evidence for the latter is pretty old so maybe they are IP banning everything. I will check. However, I DO know that you don't get in trouble if your invitees fuck up. It's their problem, and theirs alone.

I'll ask Mr Mod tomorrow about the IP bans. Seriously though, it's pretty easy to not get kicked off. I have only uploaded 3 albums ever, and I've got nearly 150GB up. Just leave the torrents running and don't be a fool.

sorry to hear that Spinless, just alot of ppl have lost their accounts and the only way is to beg for them on forums.. Its pretty sad, yea.. but what else can you do. oink-invite is gone and when i had my invite long ago 6 weeks = deletion. my cable went down for a month and i was pretty much done.

if it means sticking around getting a more posts, meeting ppl and whatnot for an invite, i would gladly do it. i've got noone else to turn to.. until then, greets and hello ppl :]
