Hi there, ill be in sydney for the next three months and looking for live music for free (or cheap at least). even without the restrictions of my already tortured musical taste, free live music seems pretty hard to find in sydney city. u could go out all night listening to some underground rave stuff, okay. but what if u want to hear bands like muse, slut, ratatat (i already got the 18th of november gig), placebo, mogwai, or also some jazz (no new orleans or dixie).

anyone got any ideas where to go? ("out of this city" is no possible answer)

As I am at work, i should probably recomend you check out www.liveguide.com.au where I provide info about the best upcoming events.

As for more comprehensive stuff.... for cheap live music, there's Spectrum at 34 Oxford St (right near the city end), Club 77 (near the coke sign at King's Cross, but filled with indie wankers), The Hopetoun Hotel, the Sandringham Hotel (there's a guy name of Louis Tillet who plays there for free every Sunday who's pretty good)

The Blow are playing sometime in November, and if you suddenly come into money you can see Lou Reed, M.Ward, Joanna Newsom, and the Violent Femmes at the Sydney Festival

there's more. so much more. i'll help you more soon...

I'm overseas right now, but isn't the Newtown Festival supposed to be on around this time of year? There's usually a few decent bands who play at that, plus the Chaser guys usually do a show, amongst other things. The whole thing's free, and it's generally good fun. And every Thursday there's a free d'n'b night at the Abercrombie from about 8 or 9pm. Probably not what you were looking for, but hey, it's free and generally good fun...

If you ever come down to Wollongong, about 45mins to an hour from Sydney theres lots of free live music about. It's a pretty shitty place to live but theres a few decent live venues.

Thats where I normally hangout, It's not a bad pub, cheapish drinks, good atmosphere. I usually head down on Friday night with a mate of mine and get drunk while listening to the music. Bands are ususally local though some national bands come through. Genres and quality of the acts vary pretty significantly.

The other place I sometimes go is the Palm Court hotel, though I'd only go there for the music. They have a pretty good PA setup and shit but It's a pretty dodgy area for a pub, always filled with junkies and shit. Everytime I've been someone has spilled a beer on me or yelled at me or my mates over something, . Has some good acts though and the drinks are hell cheap.

There's the uni-bar as well, though I wouldn't bother. I think UOW  has the poorest excuse for a bar out of all the uni's I've been to, which granted isn't that many (ANU, UNSW, Sydney and UC). It's over priced, the food is shit etc, though in session they do have a lot of music and stuff.

Yallah woolshed thing has a lot of live stuff going on as well, it's too far out the way for me to check out though.
