I'd like something with pop-minded musical arrangemens but nothing obnoxiously twee or lyrically saccharine.

Architecture in Helsinki
Belle & Sebastian
All Girl Summer Fun Band
The Boy Least Likely To
The Pippettes

I like all those I struck out, but they're definately super twee and sugary...especially AGSFB and The Boy Least Likely To.

Go for newer Of Montreal, it's dancy and kind of funky. Two Gallants are pretty good, so is MGMT(though just get the song Kids). You might like The Wrens - Meadowlands, too. Okkervil River, perhaps. You might like Adam Green-Novotel is a really cool song but his voice isn't for everyone. Oh! Andrew Bird, too.

I'd say basically anything by Bikini Kill, mostly because I have a huge bias towards bands with female members.
Also, definately check out Fugazi (as mentioned).  They rock!

Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, Leatherface, Screeching Weasel, Dillinger Four

I don't know if I would peg the Hellacopters as "punk", per se, judging by what I've heard (which admittedly isn't much).

Listen to Propagandhi's new album Potemkin City Limits.  Propagandhi has been producing arguably the best punk music in the scene since they got their new bassist Todd Kowalski.  Their sound has gotten harder, their song structure has become much more open-ended, and as a result their lyrics much more stinging.  And did I mention Chris Hannah lays down some of the most blazing leads ever?

Other than that, yeah, Fugazi is an excellent choice.  Listen to Black Flag and Minor Threat too.  I also enjoy The Thermals.

early mayhem are good
if your interested in the satanic side of stuff without the black metal sound (scarily enough there are a few of these people) look into mercyful fate and venom
graveworm are good unblack metal

The best thing about Propagandhi was John K. Samson. He's in a much better place now, a.k.a. The Weakerthans.

Anyways, if you're looking for a Hellacopters type sound try Sahara Hotnights. In particular, their album Jennie Bomb is very good. I'll warn you, they're grrrls.

The first Ramones album is always a good bet. Great buzzsaw riffs and some surprisingly catchy melodies.

As for something more riff-driven, even if not necessarily like the Hellacopters and hasn't already been mentioned:

The Gits - Frenching The Bully
Zeke - Death Alley and/or Dirty Sanchez
The Dwarves - Blood, Guts & Pussy
Dag Nasty - Can I Say
Glass & Ashes - Aesthetic Arrest
Apocalypse Hoboken - House of the Rising Son of a Bitch
The Sultans - Ghost Ship
X (the Australian one, predating the one from LA) - Aspirations

If you'll make exceptions for Burzum, you might as well make exceptions for any band that has an ideology that you don't necessarily agree with or obviously don't subscribe to. That said, it's ashame if you're crossing NS bands off your list IMO due to their radical and usually ridiculous viewpoints. There are dozens of excellent bands within that sub-genre that deserve to be heard for musical reasons alone. I can seperate myself from their message and just listen to the music, and it's not like I'm supporting them by going out and buying their entire discography in most cases or getting their logo tattooed on my back.

I pretty much agree 100% with this.

I think the reason there so much " good" NSBM being put out is the artists are pasionate about the music they make, sure they have a fucked up ideology, but they care enough about it to perform with such intensity and feeling. Case in point is Burzum, the thing which makes the band so fucking good,  is Varg cared enough about he's music to pour he's heart and soul into the recordings. Varg is hardly one of the most technically proficient musicians, Hell Eurynomous did the solo on "war" for him. But he's compostions are brilliant, the music has feeling and atmosphere behind it and thats what missing from the "mainstream" BM artists today.

I'm generalising here but 90% of the BM bands around now days (and that includes formerly decent  2nd wave bands like Darkthrone, Satyricon, etc) have basically becomes parodies of themselves and the genre, being evil for the sake of being evil and releasing albums entirely devoid of intensity feeling and "atmosphere" the central tennets of good black metal. You can throw in all the blast beats all the technically proficiency you want, you're not going to have a decent bm album if it has no atmosphere. The biggest atrocity is these albums are selling. Look at fucking Dimmu Borgir, listen to their first album, now listen to their new shit, tell me which is better but look at what sells. It fucking retarded.

Now BM has reached the point mainstream people are paying attention to it and are suddenly saying, change the vocals, fix the production etc etc etc, same thing happen to thrash in the 80's (people started saying, slow down, less riffs, more melody, better production) and what did you get fucking Metallica. Now look at the "popular" Black Metal bands today and tell me the same fucking thing isn't happening to Black Metal at the moment.

I don't want to sound like one of those Jaded "Black Metal is dead" people cause its not. Theres a lot of good underground Black Metals bands out there today, hell many of them have been mentioned in this thread and a lot of them even use "modern" production, but their still innovative, intense and passionate. But all this thing about preocupations over a bands ideology and what people are and aren't prepared to listen to has pissed me off.

Now I agree National Socialism is a fucking joke. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop listening to Wagner because he was a racist and an Anti-semite and I'm not going to stop listening to Graveland for preciesly the same reason. Theres a difference between "the man" and the music.

Reinventing Axl Rose by Against Me! is basically the only punk worth listening to.
Or maybe the punk most worth listening too.

Black Flag is pretty good, but whenever I listen to it I cannot help but visualize Henry Rollins screaming motivational things and tearing his shirt off, bearing his massive muscled chest. I basically can't think about anything else and cannot continue with my day until I drop everything and masturbate.

Curious point! The first thing I think of when I think of indie pop is Stars or BSS, although that's probably my arts & crafts bias showing through. Thinking of the definition of popular indie bands, The Arcade Fire are probably one of the most popular indie bands of recent years. They've got catchy, poppy parts in their songs, but the edge on the vocals would make me think that they're not quite indie pop.
I feel like I'm wasting my breath even trying to talk about the definition of indie pop, though, so I'm going to stop right here.

So... my indie pop addiction has gotten out of hand. Yesterday I spent $40 on CDs that included Saturday Looks Good To Me and a local band with a song about Angie Hart, the lead singer of Frente!
I hear alot of this 'hip-hop' and 'metal' stuff, but I kinda afraid to dip my toe into the water... is there any of it that'll appeal to someone raised on classic rock, 50s pop, and twee/indie/power-pop?
