Actress Hands are kind of Indie Poppy in a pavementy sort of way with blurry bits too. And they're generally worth checking out, for they are awesome.

To borrow from Ode:

The Knife is my current squeeze music-wise right now, and they are a wonderful indie-electronic band.

Uh, is that really indie pop?

Is that really indie pop?

indie pop?

I wasn't referring to The Knife.

I saw them live on the strenght of two songs (Last Caress and Dig Up Her Bones) and a free ticket. Didn't really like them, but i'm guessing what i liked in those songs was Danzig, and if i listened to Danzig era Misfits i'd love it? like the choruses and the song structure combined with the roughness and the darkness, if that makes sense
man moshing to Last Caress and Dig Up Her Bones is awesome

You see?  You see?!  This is the kind of specificity we need to encourage around here.  Not "recommend me some indie" or "recommend me some metal" - but "recommend me some damn early 90s damn math-rock on damn Touch & Go."  I mean, a record label and everything!  YES.  No room for doubt, no room for confusion - Dark Flame, I applaud you and your tracer-bullet-like approach to the standard, tired, music recommendation thread.

That said, I barely even understand what that thread subject means, so, uh, I got nothin'.

You quote my opinion on a boring, over-rated band, a band moreover which does not really sound punk at all, and then you quote a very good, widely liked album of huge importance to the history of rock that I have recommended, that everyone can agree on is punk.

I don't see where you're coming from.

If you define 1994 and 1995 still as early (well, it was the first half, technically), then:
Rodan and June of 44. Also Shellac (duh).

Basically, I'm saying that listening to The Sex Pistols, for me, would be a less enjoyable experience than simply having Johnny Rotten shit directly into my ear, and that Jawbreaker is one of my favorite bands. In short, I disagree with you.

We've been through this before, and we have come to the conclusion that some people think that forming as a vehicle to sell merchandise (much like the Monkees) and signing to EMI, Virgin and Warner Brothers for a #1 record would disqualify them from being punk. While others would think that pins and ripped shirts are like, the punkest thing ever.

So, there is really no reason to go over this again.

Is Snow Patrol indie pop? I think they sound more like mainstream rock-pop stuff. I once saw...was told by someone their videos get airplay in MTV.

Please could someone knowledgeable enough try and define just what indie pop means? I agree with AIH and Belle and Sebastian, but, good god, Built to Spill and Animall Collective? Broken Social Scene never sounded really pop to me either.

Also, I am recommending Brigada Flores Magon (http://www.brigadafloresmagon.org) They are a French redskin band, and are pretty cool. Also they have their last three albums on their website free to download, which is rather cool.

See, that's why I'm studying math instead of something in the arts. If we have an argument over definitions or classifications, I will go back to first principals and try some proofs and examine functions and see what I can make out of it.
Debating meanings and purposes can be a whole lot of fun, but I can get sick of it when we've got no common measures or standards. In my theoretical world, things are easier to define.

Sid Vicious' drug consumption easily qualifies the Sex Pistols as punks in the truest sense of the term.

replacing your bass player with a fan who can't play does not make a band "punk".
I stand by my previous suggestions as an excellent punk starter kit, although it is missing representation from the early '80s American hardcore scene.  I know many people swear by the Minor Threat discopraphy, but it has never done anything for me.

*edit* If I were picking one Pennywise cd to represent them, I would probably go "About Time" or "Unknown Road".  My personal fav by them is "Wildcard/A Word From the Wise"

I've been listening to waaaayyyy too much music that does not have Iggy Pop in it and I want something more in the vein of Iggy Pop right now.   I'd like something with pop-minded musical arrangemens but nothing obnoxiously twee or lyrically saccharine.  Recommend away and I'll put BitTorrent to work!  Thanks in advance.

ok let's try and settle a few arugments (by which i mean start a few more)

personally i think punk is based on lyrical content
question: do antiflag count as punk? are they still punk since they moved to sony?

to whoever said the opinion of the person who listens to black metal dosn't count is wrong i listen to black metal as well that person's opinon dosn't count because he can't articulate himself and instead wrote AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

the sex pistols are to the ramones what the monkees were to the beatles.

and at this point i have to drop a noel gallagher quote (referring to blur)

we are the beatles and the stones, THEY are the monkeys

And how exactly would punk be defined by lyrical content?

Iggy Pop is the only gig I've seen where I agreed with the people throwing bottles at him!

Hence I would say, find something else to listen to!

i'm willing to bet that, if these bottles were glass, they were less throwing them "at" him than "for" him.

you see, he has a habit of rolling around in broken glass (and possibly peanut butter) live.

this, alone, makes being an iggy pop fan worth it.
