Best Songs of all time.
« on: 21 Nov 2006, 10:52 »

The period cannot be capitalized so I couldn't emphasize it. I'm not talking about songs that last forever. I'm looking for those odd songs that say something that makes your throat catch every time you hear it. I have several of those songs. I don't mean make your throat catch in an emotional type sense, but one of those catches that make you stop because of the depth and beauty of the music, and the lyrics which say something that could NEVER be expressed through mere words alone.

I love music, in almost all forms, there are some genres I stay away from, and some I seem to live in. Country is one type of music I stay away from, that's not to say there aren't some songs with merit of their own. If I listen to Country it tends to be in the Willy Nelson Jonny Cash type era. I don't listen to too much rap, but I do have alot of respect for some in that genre, mainly those that give merit to a pure capitalistic genre through skill talent and thought (Tu Pac, OutKast for being a damn fun listen, and Ludacris) The genres I live in are classic rock TooL (yes they are their own genre) Punk (old punk think the Clash, and the Ramones) and Linkin Park/System of a down. Now for my top songs.

Dust in the Wind - Kansas
Skating Away - Jethro Tull
Parabol, Parabola - Tool
The Patient - Tool
Lateralus - Tool (I've got good reasons why this should be the #1 song I'm just listing in order as I think of them)
Carl Orff - O Fortuna

Now for my reasons behind Lateralus is two fold, reason one is the lyrics describe human exsistance to such a leangth I am surpised it's play time isn't infinate. And two just as it likens the struggle through life as a spiral it is reflected by the arrangement. There are not too many artists out today that could compete with Bach for being so intelligent and able to express themselves through music as Maynard. The song Lateralus contains the fibinacci sequence in a tonal manner. I look forward you everyone's take on this subject, and listening to your picks.

Because if there are three bands that will last forever they will be Tool, Linkin Park, and System of a Down.

At least in my personal hell.

Jethro Tull were pretty good i think, but Kansas and Tool are just fucking terrible. I am not too keen on Nazi composers either.

Every song by Okkervil River but especially "The War Criminal Rises and Speaks" and also "The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion".

Also: Carry On Wayward Son is so better Dust in the Wind.

Oh, and Locomotive Breath is clearly Jethro Tull's best song.

Well, or Thick as a Brick, but that shouldn't count because it's also an entire album.

Less Tool hate, more Jethrotull Love.  I DEMANDZ IT.

Also, less vocal bias.  The best song in the world is clearly Beethoven's 9th symphony (also known as Ode to Joy).  While this has vocals, they are all in german, so I have no idea what they are saying. But I care not, because its ODE TO FUCKING JOY.

kthxbye.

He doesn't.

I am willing to put down Lateralus in a list of the songs that touch me deep inside my soul, simply because I have done too much acid listening to the album to not have that climax of a song do something to my psyche.

But honestly, Lovely Rita. That is it. A dude tries to make it with a pretty lady.

For me:
At The Gates - Raped by the Light of Christ

"When the yellow dies under the velvet thoughts
Blood-bubbles nestled in thorns

I have travelled through suns,
And the darkness of the end
Now I surrender to the void
And join with the pulse of the universe

The world burns with worms of fire
The world burns

The beauty in twisted darkness
Raped by the light of Christ
We were not born to follow
We don't need your guiding light

I tear the skies with my bare hands
There is no death for me
The world burns with worms of fire

Sun or animal, star or beast
Alone all the way to the heart of Christ

I'm free to die when I wish
I'm born from scarlet songs
And when the time is right
I shall forever walk alone

The beauty in twisted darkness
Raped by the light of Christ
Worlds end, through a thousand suns"

I know it may seem like an odd choice and the tittle makes the song sound incredibly lame but this is 3 minutes of amazing music.  When I heard this the first time I wasn't a metal fan at all, I thought all that Death Black whatever shit with the growled vocals was complete rubbish and utterly unlistenable. This song revised my entire musical taste instantly.

The beautiful acoustic build up, slowly increasing in speed and volume until it climaxs with the electric guitar comming over the top playing the bruttally heavy beginning riff.  Then the incredibly pissed off voice just starts spewing out the lyrics with utter hatred (I wouldn't even call it singing, more like a controlled yell), then the fast tremello picked riffs hit and damn its heavy it fast and its melodic I don't knows whats hit me but I liked it. So yeah it may not be my favorite song but yeah it changed my tastes completely in one listen.

Kansas, Tull - not bad bands. Tool - i can understand liking them at a certain age and with certain drugs. The Clash, The Ramones... essential? Sure. But LINKIN PARK?  SYSTEM OF A DOWN? WTF?

At this point my best songs are Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, something by the Hold Steady, and a Dylan song like Mr Tambourine Man or Desolation Row or Tombstone Blues.... Dylan's stayed constant with me. dunno if the others will

This is such a gay question.  I hate it when people ask you to list ONE thing...I can't really say that I have a constant favorite song.  At this point in time, I have roughly 5.
Lykathea Aflame - On The Way Home
uneXpect - fuck it, pick one off of In A Flesh Aquarium, chances are it's right
Spawn of Possession - In My Own Greed
     Mr. Bungle - Ars Moriendi
     Genghis Tron - Arms

I had forgotten about Carry On by Kansas...:( Time to run off and piratebay some kansas tracks. And what's the hate on Tool and Kansas? Kansas is a very accomplished band, all of the muscians in it are EXCEPTIONAL quality.

Oh...and I also forgot to Add Allen Parson's Project - The Raven to my list.  Studio Musicians in a band ftw.

So, this thread isn't best song of all time so much as it is a list of our favorite songs, individually?

Because I'm pretty sure those don't qualify for best songs of all time.

Holiday In Cambodia

You know, I could probably fucking go with that. Mean riffs, a gorgeous bassline and some fucking brilliant lyrics

"Yer a star-belly sneech,
You suck-a like a leech,
You want everyone to act like you.
Kiss ass and bitch
So you can get rich,
But yer boss gets richer off you!"

As for Something to Cling To, it's one of the two songs ever to make me cry*. Yes, I was drunk and depressed, but it still did that. It's now only my second most uplifting song (Disco Hospital by Coil is just the most irrepressibly joyous, life affirming fucking thing I have ever heard. But still, even objectively, Something to Cling to is a great song, definitely got to be in the top ten or maybe top twenty Skyclad songs** and it's either the best or second best track on Vintage Whine (On With Their Heads! is the other competitor).

*The other was Sol Invictus - Here Am I, which was also whilst I was drunk and depressed, but for completely the opposite emotional reasons.

**A Bellyful of Emptiness, Cancer of the Heart, Catherine at the Wheel, Cry of the Land, Desperanto (A Song For Europe?), The Disenchanted Forest, Fainting By Numbers, Great Blow For a Day Job, Helium, History Lessens, Inequality Street, Land of the Rising Slum, Moongleam and Meadowseet, On With Their Heads!, The One Piece Puzzle, Our Dying Island, Penny Dreadful, Polkageist!, R'Vannith, Schadenfreude, The Sinful Ensemble, Single Phial, Sins of Emission, Skyclad, Something to Cling To, Spinning Jenny, Still Spinning Shrapnel, Vintage Whine, The Wickedest Man in the World, Womb of the Worm, You Lost My Memory...Shit can't do it :(

Personally, for a couple reasons, I would have to say Anisette by June of 44.

But also:
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five
And the Benny Hill Theme. Believe me, people will still know that one a couple hundred years from now. And even then, everything will still be funny if you just listen to this piece of music.
Also, some piece of classical music, but I simply don't know enough there to actually say anything about it.

Boston - More Then a Feeling
Journey - Don't Stop Believing
Europe - Final Countdown

If your going to kick my ass, I'll be at bike racks afterschool. There's a big 'Kick me' sign on me, you can't miss me.
