Are there any >good< covers of Kansas, Simon and Garfunkle, and Jethro Tull?
The Eyeball Kid:
So i was watchign some sketch comedy show from 2 years ago, and they had a skit/song about RHCP writing the same song again and making money of it. It was mildly funny, but the fact that it was still topical 2 years later is kinda telling.
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone does a great live cover of 'Graceland'
Johnny Cash's covers are usually better then the originals - 'Hurt' and 'Mercy Seat'
Narr:
Threads like this remind me why I avoid the music section of QC as often as I have.
It's impossible to voice having an opinion without someone who vehemently disagrees. For fuck's sake, I doubt I could make a thread saying "I think Beethoven is one of the most brilliant musical geniuses to ever live" and that'd get flamed by people who hate classical music.
It's absolutely ridiculous. Tommy, you said in this thread something about playful ribbing is okay. Well, perhaps. But when every single post is "ribbing", it ceases to be playful and in fact becomes rather standoffish.
And the worst thing about this post? I'm typing it knowing full well absolutely no one else will regard anything I have to say, because apparently my musical tastes are "mainstream" which obviously means I'm an uncultured twat-face, right?

FireStarter:
Just because you musical taste is "mainstream" doesn't mean it's insignificant. So long as you don't own a Copy of BSB - Millenium or Brittney "I like fucking with hats off" Spears we'll be cool. I've got alot of "mainstream" shit on my play list. The only reason I can post here is because, like my name says I live with fire on a daily basis. So, flaming ribbing joking jesting insults and murderous threats really don't bother me. Frankly because I can give almost as well as I can take.
BUT, for your own personal safety, don't try ribbing tommy....he's a kungfu forum master, he will rape your children and burn down your house, before he comes outside.
Storm Rider:
Guys, people disagree without music. Taking personal offense because somebody on the internet thinks a band you like sucks is stupid. As long as argument doesn't turn into personal attacks, I don't see a problem with it. The point is somebody (too lazy to check) said 'I fucking hate you' because Narr said he liked Lenny Kravitz. What they should have said was "I think Lenny Kravitz's cover of American Woman is really bad".
But really dude, Lenny Kravitz is pretty bad. I don't think any lesser of you for it, but yeah.
Splunkle:
To get back on topic, I think there have been a bunch of Bob Dylan covers that are better than the originals. Perhaps not mind-boggiling better, but still good. To staet with, there is Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower, which I really dig, but I'm just massively in favor of distorted guitars. The Whitlam's did a cover of Tangled Up in Blue which was rather nice, though I admit I'm having trouble recalling how the Dylan original went. There was a version of Boot of Spanish Leather I once heard on some community radio station, which was very nice indeed even though it was a straight cover. I think it was by Nanci somebody, but I can't really remember.
In general, I find Dylan covers totally worth checking out, because they generally are preety awesome songs that aren't really hard to play, so one would have to work hard to make the song suck. Of course, that doesn't mean a cover is better, but it doesn't stop the cover beign nice ^_^
