Nerd/Geek Rock
« on: 06 Dec 2006, 00:10 »

I am joining a Nerd Rock band, with some friends of mine. I wanna study the music, the only two nerd rock bands I know are Weezer, Hellogoodbye, and Nerf Herder. So give me some good Nerd/Geek Rock bands to listen too.

Yeah, I'm a jerk...
What the hell kind of genre can encompass Fountains of Wayne and REM? Is that not a leetle broad?
I guess that is a hint to not pay attention to Wiki for basically anything.

I am guessing my friends were leaning more towards the more poppy type of Nerd Rock like Nerf Herder. Atleast, I hope so ,because listening to They Might Be Giants makes me want to kill myself.

You gotta fight!
For your right!
To maa-aasturbate!

EDIT: I think Devo, The Phenomenauts, and The Aquabats would probably qualify.  Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head, though.

Definitely check out Pain. A somewhat obscure punk revival band from Alabama, they created some of the best nerd anthems of the 90s.

I personally consider Yes to be nerd rock.  I mean, have you ever seen Rick Wakeman?

But I have a feeling that's not the kind of nerdiness you desire...

would old Green Day be considered Nerd Rock?  not like their American Idiot album because it was most entirely shite.  but stuff from like Dookie or International Superhits.

Outside of 'Geek Stink Breath,' which namechecks speed and so might not be considered so, I'd say that they don't.

Int'l Superhits?  How is that old?

Maybe Kerplunk?  Dominated Love Slave was bad enough that you could consider it a "geeky" song.

are we talking about nerdy bands or bands that deal with nerdy subjects? Barenaked Ladies have some great nerd refs in their songs... nerdy people in bands is way too big a topic. you end up including Elvis Costello, 'cause he was once a computer programmer and looks like a nerd, or the Mountain Goats 'cause John Darnielle sometimes blogs about videogames

After spending two hours DLing music from various bands, I think I can safely say that Wizard Rock (It's music about the Harry Potter books) is the nerd/geekiest music you will ever find. You can DL some freebies here:

Sigh. Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys played at the Tacoma Public Library shortly before I moved, but I didn't get to go see them because I was busy trying to pack up my entire apartment into two suitcases to take with me.

That was fun.

The Whomping Willows are quite good, if I recall correctly.

I don't think any of these bands play anywhere near where I live. Stupid Wisconsin...
I suppose I could actually go -check-, but I don't think I'd want to go see just -one- band. I'd want it be some kind of a festival type thing, you know? it's fun though!
