Fallout 1 & 2: Easily two of the best games I've ever played.
Do we have anything more, though? I love the style, ambiance, plot, and everything about fallout, so is there you guys play that can get me my fix for living the life of a nomadic gunslinger in the post-apocalyptic wasteland?

Wasteland.

Otherwise, you really won't find anything that seriously compares in any way whatsoever.

You guys do know there's gonna be a third one eventually, right?

Bethesda is a pretty effin' good developer (you may have heard of the Elder Scrolls series), so I'd be pretty confident that they'd do it up right. But I didn't play either of the first two, so I can't really say for certain. Not to mention nothing has been said about that game since Bethesda announced they had bought the rights, so who knows what state it's in now.

The main reservation that several Fallout fans have about Bethesda doing the game is that while The Elder Scrolls is a great series, they are not anywhere near the same kind of game that Fallout is. They happen to share the same genre and the whole idea of doing pretty much anything you want, but Fallout actually put a decent amount of focus on the overall storyline, and was a traditional turn based RPG. The fact they bought the rights to the SPECIAL system though is very encouraging, as well as the fact that the guys that did the Dark Brotherhood story arc in Oblivion are heading it up, but this is still very much NOT the kind of game Behtesda is known for.

For me personally, it's also because Bethesda has never shown any indication that they are able to make interesting personalities for NPC's, and they've never made a game to my knowledge that relies a lot on its very, very, very dark humor. I think BeThesda will do a decent job on Fallout 3, but I'm not so sure It's gonna feel like a real Fallout game to me.

I highly reccomend you check out Fallout 1&2. there's no excuse for it anymore since its so cheap. You will be required to download patches for the games though, lots of gamebreaking bugs in 2 if you don't.

Seriously, do it. There's nothing like slipping an armed Time Bomb onto a smalll child who just stole your Power Armor.

Man I am a grumpy old bastard. Back in my day, video games had content, and didn't rely on their 'flash-grafx' to woo gamers.

Sorry. I love the dark humour in fallout, the silly tangential 'special' encounters, the NPC personalities, the concept, and the everything. Everything except the lazy developers who released a buggy, unfinished product. They mad a great game, they just weren't great business people or anything.

As for Bethesda, I've heard lots of good things about the elder scrolls, but they are being very tight lipped over fallout (the fanbase of fallout is still strong and they would not hesitate to lynch Bethesda's CEO) and we don't hear a lot about it.
Bottom line, I'll probably play it if it comes out, but still I doubt it'll live up to the others.

Well, you do have to admit that Fallout 2 could have been worse. They only had 1 year from start to release with the game, and Black Isle was very open about being game designers and not so much programmers. Hell, even WITH the bugs it had, it was still better than any other RPG i had ever played at the time. Patched it IS the best best RPG i have ever played... just barely ahead of Fallout 1 and Arcanum.

R.I.P. Black Isle and Troika :'(

We know the following about fallout 3:
- It is going to be 3rd person.  I can't recall whether this means the traditional isometric 3rd person, or some other camera, though.
- It is going to be using the same engine as Oblivion, but updated to stay with the times, presumably.
- It isn't done yet.

Fallout Tactics was pretty good.  I would love Fallout 3; nothing has every come close to touching on the whole post-apocalyptic theme.  In fact, the only other one I know that comes close is Auto Assault, and it is a car-based MMO, not a(n?) RPG.

Semi-Bump

Fallout 1 was and still is one of the best games I have ever played. EVER. It's similar to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in that: I can basically sleepwalk through the game I've played it so much, it's just long enough but not too long, and I still dig it out every few months.

Fallout 2 I have never gotten more than a few hours into. It's not even the bugs that people complain about, I just don't like it that much. Feels like too much of the same, but in a bad way. The beginning of the game has always seemed slow paced and stupidly hard to me, too.

I enjoyed Fallout 1 and Tactics . . not so much Fallout 2.  I just felt Fallout 2 wasn't as well done.  I've played through one about 4 times with different abilities / set-ups.

Oh no Scrambled Greg, oh no! Fallout 2 is the one I prefer! It's got a lot more ways around combat and such, there is so much more that you can do with the game that way. The world is larger, there's more to do, and more ways to do everything!
Gauss rifle? HELL YES! All the cool toys and all the cool places are great. My favorite part of the game is exploring new places, and man, fallout 2 has so much more to see and do in it. I highly recommend you try and get past those first few hours.

I really loved both of those games, Fallout 2 especially.  I have yet to find a game to match the open ended feeling of it, especially in your interactions with the people you came across.  The Icewind Dale games and Baldur's Gate games that were done by Black Isle are also a lot of fun and similar in playing style but they're based off/in the Forgotten Realms universe so it's not the exact same feel.  Still, decent games if you enjoy that sort of thing.

I wouldn't count on anyone making a game that compares in the forseeable future, but I can't rule it out completely.

My problem with open ended games is that I have the knack for getting myself into situations I shouldn't be in and can't get out of. It's why I spent more time creating characters in Morrowind than I did playing the game. There is such a thing as TOO MANY options sometimes.

Maybe I will give Fallout 2 another chance, though. I always mean to, but I never get around to it.

Amen.

I'm notorious for not completing open ended games. Morrowind and Oblivion are 2 games that I can't finish due to my character creation fetish. Well, that and there's technically no finish to them. Fallout 2 I have beaten dozens of times, and every character build is great. There really is nothing like beating the last area without firing a single round. Or having a highly intelligent conversation to another character that also has an intelligence of 1 or 2.

Then there's punching someone with a Power Fist and watching half of there torso fucking EXPLODE.

I completely agree, on a lot of games the character creation portion is more fun for me than the actual game.  I think Fallout 2, Morrowind, Oblivion (especially if you got the facegen trial and did it to yourself and adjusted the sliders in Oblivion accordingly to make a really close replica of your face), and Neverwinter Nights 2 were like this.  The Sims a little bit too, although I didn't care for the game play of Sims all that much just the character creation.  The later Myst games were good for this too.

Fallout 2 was my favorite though because once you play through it a few times you have an idea of how the build you do is going to help you in specific situations. I actually started using cheats in that game to adjust my stats so I could see all the different reactions to situations based on the strengths and weaknesses of your character.  Also, was anyone else surprised at how much cheaper it was to play through the game as a female and exchange sex for things instead of money?  That saved me so much.

Brotherhood of Steel blew so much. I do have to admit Co-Op was mildly entertaining though.

Tactics was probably the only good game outside of the core 2 honestly. Outside of the continuity issues, i think a sequel would have polished everything that was wrong with the first one.

apparently, Interplay is going to be making a Fallout MMO.  They reserved that right when they handed the rights off to Bethesda Softworks.  So there's also that.

I fully expect it to be nothing but a cash grab MMO assuming Interplay can even come up with the money to make it at this point. Really, they are hanging on by a thread financially, and I'll be very surprised if they aren't bought out sometime soon. Assuming anyone would want to buy their diseased carcass.

Obviously I'm not bitter concerning Interplay.

From the way it read, they were hoping to hock a bunch of other licenses to pay for it.  They're expecting it to cost $75 million to produce and have 1 million concurrent paying players by the first year.  While I admire their enthusiasm, that's a hell of a lot of high expectations.

The whole plan just reeked of desperation.  I bet it'd be a great game, but a million subs constantly?  That'd take A: a minor miracle and B: full frontal nudity.

Maybe not so much the last part, but I'm kind of hopped up on cold medicine so at this point it sounds like a great thing to add to an MMO.

Why even make a Fallout MMO?? It's not like Fallout is some huge series that has millions upon millions of fans ala Warcraft transformed into WOW. Fallout is and always will be a cult game series, and a MMO just doesn't make sense unless they change everything that made it a critics favorite niche title in the first place.

Actually, I dare say Fallout would have been much bigger if Interplay had put any effort into advertising it. Anyone I've ever directed towards them loves them. It's just that No one has fucking heard of them outside of us nerds who either played it not long after it came out, or those we have directed towards it.

But yeah, an MMO would be pointless unless they plan to release it after Fallout 3 is released. Even then, they better hope Bethesda doesn't fuck it up.

Really, they should just put the damn money towards paying off their debt so the Russian mafia doesn't break their kneecaps.

I can't really see a Fallout MMO, unless it would be something like Tactics.  Tactics would be a fun game (turn based I think) to play with friends.

Oh no, I enjoyed Tactics single player quite a bit, I just think it needed some polish in its gameplay balance from switching between turnbased and real time. I really think a sequel would have fixed every problem i had with it gameplay wise.

It certainly beat the shit out of anything else that had raped the Fallout franchise,

It had a Real Time option with the action points still enabled. The action points would refill at a set pace. Worked amazingly well, but it unfortunately made turn based completely pointless and MUCH much harder if you fought more than 1 opponent at a time.
