best christmas songs
« on: 21 Dec 2006, 16:36 »

this is not for traditional carols but rather an attmept to find the best alternative christmas song

my votes going towards the flaming lips 1995 effort christmas at the zoo

NB if anyone lists anything by alvin and the chip monks or the crazy frog i will fly over to their place use a welding torch to attach headphones to their ears then cover their head with that reverse bear trap from Saw which can only be disabled after they've listened to each album 200 times through...it would be interesting to see how long it would ake somebody to comit suicide

...not that i'm crazy or anything

I am pretty much a Grinch, and most Christmas songs annoy the hell out of me, but I very much liked a song that Switchfoot recorded many years ago called "Evergreen."  I don't know if you can even find it anywhere anymore, but I think the cd it was on is at my parent's house; I'll try to find it and maybe host an mp3 for anyone that might be interested (I know there seems to be a lot of hate for Switchfoot on this board, but I still like 'em)

You know, Tommy, technically I started that thread to bitch and moan about how much I HATE Christmas music...Gridgm is just asking for new songs to listen to, or something like that...

I like "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.  I also enjoy the version ELP did for their box set, with an older sounding Lake on vocals and a better production overall.

Also, Steve Vai's version of "Christmas Time is Here" (the theme from the "Peanuts" Christmas special) is magic.

I actually really enjoy the Bright Eyes Christmas album. It's nothing special really, mostly just Connor Oberst singing traditional Christmas songs, I dig it though, it's simple, and I tend to enjoy his vocals.

While classics such as Carol (or Canon?) of the Bells are pretty rad, he specifially asked not for them but for alternative.

My favorite Sufjan Christmas song is "Come On! Let's Boogey to the Elf Dance!"
Christmas Cake by Rilo Kiley breaks my heart (so good).
Just Like Christmas and Blue Christmas, both by Low are.... Low doing Christmas songs. Gorgeous to the Nth power.
Christmas Party by the Walkmen is really rad.
Happy Christmas (War is Over) by the Polyphonic Spree gives me chills. Oh Polyphonic Spreeeeee
Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses is The Best. It's sassy and catchy and rocky with pop.
pas/cal's version of Last Christmas is dreamy.
The Chrismas Song by the Raveonettes sounds like a traditional christmas song, and it's catchy and makes you bop. Whispered vocals are really nice sometimes.
When I Get Home for Christmas by Snow Patrol sounds very much like Snow Patrol. If you like one song of theirs, you probably like them all and I do.
Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas by the Eels is rockin! It's the same as the Snow Patrol thing though, if you like the Eels, you will like this song too. Only it is not so dark!
The twee-est song is Little Donkey by the Boy Least Likely To. It is ADORABLE.
Then of course you have the traditionals sung by indie/alt artists like Feist with Lo: How a Rose E'er Blooming and Clem Snide with Joy to the World and just the really really most awesome christmas song ever (other than the obvious Fairytale of New York) is Johnny Cash's Silent Night.

I really like Christmas.

I love that song.
Best Christmas song is still Fairytale of New York by the Pogues
you can cross out 'Christmas' and that sentence still works

i think the winner of all this.

is the star wars "christmas in the stars" album.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_in_the_Stars
theres the wikipedia entry on it.

apparently it was the first recording bon jovi ever appeared on too.

it answers such important questions as "what do you get a wookie for christmas when he already has a comb?"

While I like all of these (especially the Bowie and Crosby duet), hands down the best Christmas song is "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues.  Genius.

Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack

That is the one Christmas album I could listen to all the way through over and over again and still enjoy it as much the last time as I did the first.

Amen brother! Also the marvellous Pipettes did a version of 'In The Bleak Winter' which is absolutely lovely.

Like i said, its so good it trancends Christmas. Its one of those songs that once you start listening to it you kinda don't want to stop. The Eels and Ramones X-Mas songs are kinda like that, but nowhere near as brilliant.
'Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minniapolis' is the obligatory Tom Waits entry. pretty standard song for Waits, so really good
