Diss music in here.
« on: 21 Dec 2006, 17:12 »

In reading "the state of music today", the discussion between Khar and Ostrich sparked my interest - music seems to be stereotyped often for what seems to be little real reason. So I pose a question:

If you tend to dislike a genre of music in particular, why do you dislike it?

Please note that I'm looking for real answers here, spoutings of "pretentious bullshit" and "lacking in emotional value" aren't helping anyone and are gross generalisations of very varied genres of music.

To begin with, I'll say I don't like what I've heard of rap or techno. They just doesn't appeal to me thematically, technically or artisticly. In all fairness, I've not heard much of either genre and what I have heard is terribly mainstream, so I'm not a good judge on those particular genres.

Tune in next week for the thread 'Post here if you hate music'.
Followed by 'I don't know anything at all about music!'
Afterwards we'll have a thread where we discuss why we should BAN music.

Until then, just avoid talking about the bands that YOU like and complain about the bands somebody else likes instead.

This thread is exactly what we have been trying avoid.

Variations of this "Music you hate" theme have been utterly covered recently.
Please, please can we not do this again.

I did start this with the guideline that basically amounts to "don't be a dick about it".

But it could be interesting to hear what people have to say without any real interruption. In addition, arguments over musical taste are always going to happen, and it would be better to condense them in a single, horrid package that could be thrown away at a whim than to invite their existance in other threads.

This might perhaps work if people decide not to reply so much as say their peice and leave. Of course there is no way to control this, but I'm sure this could work for the better if the members of the forum could retain control of themselves.

You can't not be a dick about it. That's the thing.

Exactly.  Just about everyone here is passionate about one form of music or another, and no matter how much we might try to be levelheaded about things, inevitably this idea will just degenerate into people taking it personally that X doesn't like Y's favorite style or whatever.  These types of conversations are hard enough even in real life, but on the internet where there's no accurate way to judge whether someone is being sarcastic or just being a dick it just gets ugly.

I thought this was possible too.
It only takes one person to decide they don't want to do this and the system falls apart. It seems to work until one person decides music discussion is a waste of time and it suited their juvenile demeanour to be aggressive and imbecilic. That's the nature of internet trolls I'm afraid.

Well, most of the other posts in this thread have already proven that it's not possible.

My bad.

I dislike music that sounds electronic. It feels somehow fake to me and not pleasing to the ears. I dislike rap because I dislike hearing people speak, beat or no beat.

@MadassAlex- While I'm sure your intentions are noble, if we participate in the way you want us to, it will be nothing more than a flame war.

BTW, I believe the "discussion" Khar and I had that you are thinking of is in "Great Bands You Don't Care For," not "The State of Music Today."

Didn't Socrates want to ban music and artists from his ideal republic?
