Speaking of the ending of "A Day in the Life," has anyone ever played the end of that record backwards?  Since the forward version is already a record playing backwards, playing it backwards should reveal something that makes sense.

Sgt. Pepper is fantastic, but really, Abbey Road is just much, much preferable.  Side one has many of the strongest individual songs that The Beatles ever recorded, and side two is amazingly impressive as a cohesive whole.

Sergeant Pepper is so massively influential that a lot of people can't look at it objectively outside of it being such a huge record. Personally, I think that so much of Lennon's work on it is medicore - 'Mr. Kite' stolen entirely from a poster? 'Good Morning, Good Morning' which is a boring song about being boring? - that the album as a whole suffers. 'A Day In The Life' though, I think, is their single greatest achievement in the sapce of one song.

I'm not sure whether I feel particularly good about that as it relates to album titles. If this were a case where the italics actually indicated a particular word I wanted to emphasize, such as this? Yeah, I can see it. It looks goofy but I can see it. But album titles can include some type of punctuation at the end without appearing silly.

This link mentions the issue you point out. I still say it's a rule on the same approximate level as the one in my country declaring it illegal to step out of a flying plane sans parachute, lest you be fined or imprisoned.

I maintain my position that it could still be improved by slapping Lovely Rita immediatly before or after "Got To Get You Into My Life"

I don't think Rita fits very well on Revolver. And I think I know understand the absurdity of my White Album rearrangement in the other thread; any album can be improved by adding ANOTHER great song to it.

They are both actually good songs, but they're too damn happy for me. I mean, there's happy music... but both of those are like, wholesome and happy. You could probably psychoanalyze me and deduce that the fault is actually mine and not the songs, but... nonetheless... fuck 'em!

Anyone who does this and does not cut out Lucy in the Sky with diamonds fails at music.

It is one of the worst songs the Beatles ever wrote. It's not fun to listen to sober, its not fun to listen to on drugs. It is the single least fun song on Sgt Peppers, and this is the album with "She's leaving Home" on it for christs sake.

Also Dovey: We are going to throw down if you don't take back what you said about Good Morning, Good Morning.

Also did anyone notice that Nimrod cut out all the songs that didn't contain drug references? That is pretty fucking ridiculous.

Actually I was saying that because Hat takes a lot of LSD.

This is the second time you've misjudged his personality with comic results (the other time being when you accused him of being an anti-Tool snob, when in fact he loves Tool. Especially when he's on acid.)

Hey, I never said A Day in the Life was retarded.

I said it was ridiculous. I also think that cocktails are ridiculous. I think that knowing 50 different sexual positions is ridiculous. It doesn't mean I don't consider them worthwhile.

It can still be on though if you like.

Also Nimrod, I really object to you telling me I need to do some LSD for a few reasons.

1) Nobody needs to do any drugs. If a song is shit without drugs, it is shit. Drugs are an interesting reflection of our society, not a gateway to enlightenment.
2) I am willing to bet I have done more acid than you anyhow. Not that I want to turn this into a dickwaving contest, but I am just saying this in the manner that it is likely that a hot-dog eating champion has eaten more hot-dogs than your average hot-dog afficionado in the street.
3) I hate that fucking song MORE when I am on the drugs because it is fucking stupid and I am supposed to close my eyes and float around in a psychidelic world with the song wrapped around my head but instead I wind up with a headache and visualizing shooting John Lennon for being a prick.

Mea culpa Mr. Hat. I'm thoroughly glad that you and Lucille have been fully acquainted. And on the Tool thing as well.

It's really just mock peer-pressure. I do think that psychedelics are a valid path for mental expansion, but... it only goes so far. Anyone who's read up on this shit or has an ex-hippie for a dad knows that. People can use acid as a fucked up mental theme park or for self-discovery. Or both, preferably.

And tempting as it is, let's not do the whole dr00gz c0ckf!ght thing.

Still though... you hate the song more while you?re frying!? I am perturbed.

This is one of those threads that you just have to step back for a second after reading and say "Wow...just wow.."

Not only is this a thread about the trimming down of Sgt. Pepper's but it also includes some mild Pro-Drug use w/Music posts. COOL!

Seriously, the few times I HAVE done drugs and tried to listen to music, I found it harder to concentrate and got way too distracted to try and focus on what I was listening to.

Oh and if I WAS going to cut a song...it'd be Within You Without You, now THERE is a Beatles song that truly Blows.

Bahaha....my head is always going and asplodin' because of silly things. Central nervous systems are for the weak.

This is my cut:

1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

2. With a Little Help from My Friends
3. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
4. Getting Better
5. Fixing a Hole
6. She's Leaving Home
7. Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite
8. Within You Without You

9. When I'm Sixty Four
10. Lovely Rita
11. Good Morning Good Morning
12. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
13. A Day in the Life

You know what? I like Good Morning, Good Morning. And I'm not going to apologize for it. My favourite Beatles track was one that Lennon absolutely loathed, and thought was too much of a throwaway to record. I like Lennon at his most throwaway.
Despite George being my favourite Beatle, Within You Without You blows. All of the sitar songs blow to varying degrees.
Drugs = fun. Although I very rarely do ANY.

In conclusion, listen to Revolver.
