Dragon Quest 9 announced for DS
« on: 13 Dec 2006, 03:43 »

Yep It would seem that Sqeenix has finally announced a follow-up to DQ VIII, and it's no tgonna be on the X-box 360, or the PS3, or the WII. Dragon Quest IX will be on the Nintendo DS! Yes, the handheld system!

Can I even begin to tell you how much i'm looking forward to this?

I saw this earlier on Gamespot today, and I was totally not expecting this sort of move at all. I think this is potentially a huge blow for Sony, especially in the Japanese market, where those games are nearly as big as Final Fantasy. I mean, the DQ series has sold 41 million copies worldwide, which even spread over 8 games is pretty big. As somebody who enjoys traditional turn-based RPGs on portables more anyway, I'm fine with this move since I have a DS already and the same guys who developed DQ8 are making this as well.

But man, whoever's negotiating Sony's licensing deals is fucking up big time. They lost exclusivity on GTA4 and Assassin's Creed and Koei's two games (Fatal Inertia and Bladestorm), and Microsoft just straight-up pulled BioShock out from under them, not to mention making the next Splinter Cell game a 360 exclusive. I don't know if this is more Sony dropping the ball or SquareEnix giving the PS3 a vote of no confidence, but man.

DQVIII is the fastest selling game in Japan. It's bigger than FF over there because it's not nearly as overdone as FF.

Squenix just hit Sony's weak point...

You know the rest.

This game, even if it's absolute shit, will sell like sex in a bottle in Japan because they are batshit crazy about Dragon Quest and the DS seperately. Together, Dragon Quest and DS will shut down Japan for a good week, leading Godzilla to rise from the sea and destroy the entire island chain because everybody is too busy trying to level up enough to get the quad hit skill.

But really, how many Dragon Quest games have been bad? Part of the reason the series is so popular in Japan is because it consistently produces quality games. And like I said, it's the same development team as DQ8, so I'm pretty sure this will be a high quality game. I don't know exactly how well it will translate to the DS, but I'm confident they'll be able to make it work.

A major, major, major third-party developer making a move that fucks Sony?

I approve of this.

But yeah, now that I think of it more, holy hell is this gonna make SquareEnix a lot of money. I mean, developing games for the DS would cost a fraction of what developing for consoles costs, but they still retail for about half the cost of console games, at least here in the States. The DS is actually the biggest selling system of the current generation (I believe it's approaching 25 million sold at this point, not shipped), especially in Japan.

This really was an intelligent business decision for them. I've heard some concerns that the epic nature of DQ8 wouldn't translate onto a portable system well, but I still am pretty sure this will work out well for nearly everyone. You know, except Sony.

And this isn't all. Square-Enix have like, six games planned for the DS to come out early this year.

DQ 9 (mid 2007)
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (December 28th in Japan)
Final Fantasy: Chocobo and the Magic picture book
Final Fantasy XII : Revenant Wings
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Ring of Fate
It's a Wonderful Life

And i'm sure theres more.

A Crystal Chronicles game for the DS?  Awesome.  I thought the GC game was enjoyable, except for the absurd amounts of gadgetry involved to make it playable with friends.  It'd work well on the portable system, in my opinion.

God damn, i need to find my DS.  :(

I don't see how this announcement fucks the Wii or Xbox 360. Nobody expected it to come out for them.

We're also forgetting the the DQ series isn't a system make or break game series like it is in Japan.

This does make me sad. I wanted DQIX for the PS3.

You DS people have fun with your hand-held gaming systems.

No, but it is the first time a MAJOR (US or not) console franchise has gotten its direct port on anything but another console. Of course I guess really, it's still quite fitting since she merely incapacitates the Wii and 360, and blows the PS3's brains out, cause this move WILL lose the PS3 even more sales than the price already has.

Make-or-break for a system, no.

But it's a major franchise title being released for something other than a console.  I was going to use "major system" but the DS really is a major system on the market.

The DS has gotten market penetration even the 360 could only dream of right now.

You're right, but I still think people are overreacting about this. Now if they suddenly announced that Mario Galaxy or Final Fantasy XIII would only be on DS, then I'd be shitting my pants, too.

This implies that you are willing to pay for a $600 PS3 which has maybe two games worth buying to play DQ9, but not a $130 DS Lite, a system which has a fuckton of games worth buying (including access to the GBA library here) to play DQ9. Please tell me this is not true.

Heh.

Penetration.

The DS is currently primed to reach the PS2's sales numbers in Japan within the next two years. Possibly even just one. With the PS2 on the way out and Japan DQ's biggest and best market, this was only natural. Releasing for a next-gen console would have been stifling a potential best seller, with the PS3 and Wii only a year into their lives by its release and the XB360 being a miserable, hilarious failure of epic proportions in Japan.

I'm afraid it is. I've seen a fair few titles for the PS3 that I like a lot. Rainbow 6: Vegas, Assassin's Creed, FFXIII, Heavenly Sword, and the PS3 verison of Oblivion to name a few. I just like to play my games on a full size TV, with good sound. I hold nothing against the DS at all, it's a great piece of work, I just don't do the handheld thing. I don't have enough of a use for it. Also, having previously owned a PS1 and PS2, and having a pile of good games for those, consolidating everything on the PS3 sounded like good idea to me. The $500 version is (in my opinion) worth the price for 60gb less memory that I'm never gonna use for game saves.

Dude, you realize that of those, you can get all of them except for FFXIII and Heavenly Sword on the 360 for 200 dollars less, not to mention fucktons of exclusive games available already and an online system that actually... works?

Assassin's Creed is why I'm buying a 360.

Well, that and Blue Dragon. And BioShock. And Oblivion. And Splinter Cell. And Mass Effect. And Lost Planet.

And not a PS3.

And Lost Odyssey. And Crackdown. And Fable 2. And Stranglehold.

And Gears of War, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, and OH WAIT I ACTUALLY OWN ALL THOSE GAMES BECAUSE THE 360 ALREADY HAS GOOD GAMES OUT.

Totally with you on all of the games just mentioned though. Except for maybe Splinter Cell, I'm not a huge fan of thsoe games.

Thank you.

I don't like handhelds. I just don't feel like I'm getting a full experience. I guess it's less money for me to spend, but I really wanted a DQ for my new shiny box. :P

Oh, and fuck you guys for comparing a system that is half-a-year into it's lifespan to a system that /just launched/. I can count the number of good games on the Wii as well. One. And that one is also on Gamecube. And guess what? That just launched too.

CONSPIRACY!

I'm done. Sorry. Kinda pissed at all the Sony hate. Yes, they have bad PR...and have made some silly mistakes, but it's a big-ass conglomerate.

I believe they were pointing out the fact that almost every game that he mentioned he was buying the PS3 for is on the 360 already, not that the 360 is superior due to the fact that it's been out longer.

That, and many people would agree that the Wii has more than Twilight princess going for it right now. Not all of them are exclusives, but at least 2 of them (DBZ and Trauma Center) have been almost universally said to be better due to the Wii controls. The system launch line up was amazing considering the history of system launches.

Really, getting your panties in a bunch over it is just silly.

And the Wii controls actually make Madden fun to play again. I have 5 games (4 of them exclusive) for the Wii and they're all great, so I'm afraid I'll have to disagree.

Merkava, I'll drop this discussion but I am just going to say that the prospects for Microsoft next year look a lot better than Sony's. I'll admit that there are some exclusive games that look good for the PS3 coming out next year (MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, and Motorstorm). But I'm betting FFXIII doesn't make 2007. And that Killzone 2 turns out to be a big load of shit.
