I'm kind of surprised more people haven't been creaming their pants in here about Hissing Fauna, because that album is the shit.

And Friend Opportunity was my first Deerhoof album, and it's a hell of a one. Great stuff.

Friend Opportunity is quite good.  I think I like Runners Four better though.

Now that more time has passed, here's a new 'best of the year so far' list from me:

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Patty Griffin - Children Running Through
Vieux Farka Toure - s/t
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
Panda Bear - Person Pitch

The new Ponys record is really awesome. They're cribbing from Sonic Youth, Television and others, but the songwriting and recording are so superb that it comes across as really fresh and great.

Just heard the new Ponys record and I've got to say that even though the influences are fairly transparent, as you noted, it is a great rock record.

Also, I'm sure this has already been discussed elsewhere in this thread or on this forum but the new Low album is flooring me as I listen to it for the first time.  This is my first Low record so I wasn't sure what to expect, and it is understated brilliance to the core IMHO.

I have not listened to the new Low thoroughly yet.  But I just got it, as well as The Great Destroyer, so I certainly have some major listening to do.  Funnily enough, one of my friends is the cousin of Zak Sally, former bassist from Low.

I only liked a couple of releases this year, not to say most of the releases are bad, just not much appealing after the first listen.

Not technically an Album but Nocturno Culto's movie "The Misanthrope" is out in a few weeks

http://www.peaceville.com/themisanthrope/

Apparently it's a "Fictional Doccumentary" whatever the hell that means in the creators own words:
"a totally weird film with no actual information, but with atmosphere and self-irony. "

He also composed a whole bunch of music for it, should be interesting.

New Shellac album due imminently...

However, something that is already out; Marnie Stern. Probably the most exciting album of the year, it's left me flabbergasted at the lasses ability to ease Steve Vai finger taping and plank wanking into a listenable and enjoyable pop song format, plus it has Zach from Hella playing his typical messy style all over each song. In a word, it's brilliant.

I need to either start buying only brand new albums or whore myself out for money, because I cannot afford to buy all the albums I've missed over the past 50 years AND buy the ones that are coming out every week. Or I should just get an external HD and get over my moral scruples about downloading music.

I want the Panda Bear album so bad I can taste it. But I need to wait til my next credit card cut off...

For those who don't know, the new Nine Inch Nails album has leaked to.. well, wherever you usually get such stuff from, by now. It's... interesting. Definitely too complex to form an opinion based on the first impression. And yes, it is better than the last one. Not that that's much of an achievement, but if Trent had lost it, he has at least to some extent regained it.

Psh, forget the morals. In the long run they're not worth it and even if you do really end up feeling badly you can simply delete anything you downloaded. If it helps, the new Panda Bear is a really great album.

new Deerhoof has me giddy! and quite surprised at how hard it is.

I've only heard the first couple of tracks but it sounds promising, and a lot of people I know seem to like it. Might be worth a go anyway.

This week's turning out rather nicely - having gotten leaks of the new VNV Nation and NiN albums in the last couple days, it now turns out there's a new 2CD Stars Of The Lid album floating around... and I still can't stop listening to The Field's album... it never ends.

I don't know that the last two Low albums are so bad, it's just that they been doing near-perfect variations on the same idea for a decade and suddenly things changed. Who knows why. I would say they're the perfect collector's band for all their singles, EPs, and whatnot, making the A Lifetime Of Temporary Relief boxset a godsend.

I have as of yet been unable to find any torrents and such for any Low albums pre-The Great Destroyer.  That being said, I absolutley love The Great Destroyer and Drums and Guns is one of my favorite releases so far this year.

Good to hear there's like..what another 10 years or so of fantastic back Low albums I can look foward to checking out.

That box-set is fabulous, I only bought it about five months ago but I'm glad I did. Not so hot is the Sebastian Schrade film 'Low in Europe' which has the band bored, exhausted and basically at the end of their tether whilst on tour in Germany and the UK. The performance footage is okay (specifically 'The Lamb' and 'Canada') but the rest is pretty bleak viewing, aside from a few genuinely Spinal Tap moments. For example, there's a scene where the director inexplicably asks a puzzled looking Napalm Death if they are fans of Low.

I'm glad you said that, because something seemed off about that film to me, too. I don't know a hell of a lot about the band members themselves, but Alan comes off really pissy and angry throughout the whole film.

Already Released: Ensiferum - Victory Songs

+ There are new great songs like Victory Song, Wanderer, The New Dawn, One More Magic Potion and Blood is the Price of Glory
+ The new sound is still pretty good
- After the leaving off old vocalist, Jari M'a'enp'a''a', the "singing" (or croaking) has come more fuzzy and unclear
- About half of the songs are little bit too anesthetizing
- Not as good as the previous albums

Arcane gives: 7,5/10

I am also looking forward to buy Wintersun - Time and Turisas - The Varangian Way as soon as they come out (both will be released in summer).

Already Released: Ensiferum - Victory Songs

Ooh I didn't realise this was out yet I'll have to look for it, I'm a big fan of Ensiferum. Not such a huge Wintersun fan though, too shreddy and not enough atmosphere I'll probably be skipping that one...

[edit] ...forum doesn't understand scandinavian letters 'a' and 'o' :(

Yeah this forum really needs unicode support.

I've heard from a few people the new Graveland album "Will Stronger Then Death" is pretty good, I enjoyed "Fire Chariot of Destruction" so I'll probably pick this up. Otherwise I'm still holding out for a new Samael album and Summoning's ep.

According to Kanwulf's label

The new Nargaroth album will be "Semper Fidelis" and might get released this year, which would be sweet if it does.

I listened to Drums and Guns over this weekend for the first time and I think it's absolutely incredible. I've never listened to any other Low albums, though, so it's interesting to hear that the sound has changed that drastically. Now I'm left with the burning question: will I like the previous albums as much?

Only one way to find out. You've all prompted me to try to find me some early Low albums. Particular album recommendations, anyone?

I'm still waiting for my physical copy to drop through the door, along with a T-shirt. She's currently on tour, hoping to catch her in london.
She's the most imaginitive thing I've heard for a long while, although this morning something else landed on my doormat:

An album recorded in 2004/2005, I think it was released last year. Everlovely Lightningheart are a revolving cast of musicians centred around a core trio from Long Beach. Pulling noises from near enough anything that can make a noise, they've created a 40 minute album of abstract sound, beautiful instrumentation and vocal drones. Like the ambient elements of early Godspeed tied together to create a celebratory journey into sound.

http://www.myspace.com/everlovelylightningheart

Currently out on Hydrahead, with some lovely packaging.

I just downloaded From Here We Go Sublime by the Field, and while I agree with Johnny C that the collective critical orgasm the thing inspired seems a bit overly enthusiastic it is a great album from what I've heard so far.  It progresses organically, very good stuff.  I'll write on it again after I've completely absorbed it.

I'm sure we've probably had entire threads already devoted to this but has anyone heard the Grinderman record?

Panda Bear's new disc is tops for me thus far in 2007. Explosions in the Sky's new disc is pretty good, as is Do Make Say Think's. I like LCD Soundsystem's 2nd (excluding 45:33) much better than the first.

I'm disappointed in both the AF and *clap* YEAH! discs.

My top five so far this year looks something like this:
1. !!! - Myth Takes
2. The Psyke Project - Apnea
3. Longing for Dawn - A Treacherous Ascension
4. D?lek - Abandoned Language
5. Keen of the Crow - Hyborea

What I have heard off Feist - The Reminder is absolutely gorgeous bar some unremarkable ballads.

Well, first let me say that it is nothing groundbreaking and it probably won't knock you off your feet. It is, however, good solid doom/death reminiscent of a simpler Opeth. Perhaps a bit long but quite enjoyable if you ask me. On a sidenote, it is most likely the only KofC album seeing as how the band has already disbanded.
