Opeth
Tool
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
King Crimson
The Flower Kings
Pain of Salvation
Transatlantic
Agalloch
Pink Floyd
Dream Theater

There are some other musicians and composers (Coltrane, Miles Davis, Al Di Meola, Beethoven) I wanted to put instead of some of those, but they're not "bands".

Emilie Autumn (excellent voice, violin playing, and body)

Dresden Dolls (Cabaret FTW)

Inkubus Sukkubus (nothing can be said)

Nightwish (what would I be without some kind of metal...)

Miranda Sex Garden (hence the MSG in my name 'nuff said)

Faith and the Muse (another of those just plain excellent bands)

Mediaeval Baebes (Miranda Sex Garden evolved into this 'nuff said)

Blackmore's Night (similar to mediaeval baebes but with more instruments and less voices)

Cruxshadows (awesome band, but I can't really describe it)

Die Form (too good for a description)

Skyclad
Belle and Sebastian
The Decemberists
Sonic Youth

pre-Marr Modest Mouse
Fugazi
Iron and Wine
Of Montreal

I know that's only 8, but, looking through my music library, there are genuinly not that many bands that I absoloubtly have to listen to every once in a while. There's a whole lot of stuff that is definitley very good, just not top-ten material

Okay, taking a stab and it will be hard:

1. Skinny Puppy(and all related projects).  Every post I make in this music section seems to have something to do with them.  I love 'em.  I drive my friends crazy with them.
2. Godhead.  Amazing.  Noise.  Period.
3. Killing Joke. Still making great music!
4. Placebo.  My guilty pop pleasure.  Great songs.
5. Antigen Shift.  The Way of the North is probably the best album of the past few years that no one has heard.
6. Tom Waits.  No reason need be made.
7. Android Lust.  Four really consistently great and evolving albums.  Bjork meets glitch and industrial.
8. The Smiths.  They're just cheeky and total posturing, but that's the fun.
9. Haujobb.  Essential electronica.  ninetynine still gives me chills.
10. Pop Will Eat Itself.  Another guilty pleasure maybe, but they are so good.  No disputes.

Oh fun. I think I shall put recommended songs next to the names, just in case you are curious.

one- Elliott Smith (Pitseleh)
two- Minus the Bear (This Ain't a Surfin Movie)
three- Jimmy Eat World (For Me This Is Heaven)
four- Bruce Springsteen (Thunder Road)
five- Simon and Garfunkel (America)
six- Cursive (Sink to the Beat)
seven- Death Cab for Cutie (Styrofoam Plates)
eight- the Streets (Sharp Darts)
nine- Regina Spektor (Apres Moi)
ten- Margot and the Nuclear So and So's (Skeleton Key)

These are definitely my top ten as of right now. Of all time? I have no idea.

Pretty crap. It wouldn't be as terrible if A7X were on there though.

At least A7X writes the occasional nifty guitar wank.  The same cannot be said for, say, The Killers.

I'm kind of reluctant to try to put together my top ten favorite artists ever.  I'd have to think about it for a while.  I know that Jawbreaker and Hot Water Music would be on it, and probably The Replacements, but other than that...

The Band (Because... well... just because they're the shit.)
The Rolling Stones (Because Exile and Let It Bleed own so much ass.)
Deerhoof (Because they does makes me happy.)
Jedi Mind Tricks (Just cause they've got like the fucking best hip hop producer around. Vinnie's pretty hardcore too.)
Eels (Basically it's all I listened to for a long time a while back.)
The Roots (Two words... Game Theory)
Edan (Psychadelic rap by Jews is cool?)
Motorhead (Roar^2)
Belle & Sebastian (After Motorhead roars at me they make me feel better.)
Queens of the Stone Age (Because I love Rated R and Songs For The Deaf)
