Emo is when a load of people painstakingly define something as not being something else then someone comes along and ignores all of it.

I just registered to respond to this post. Emo is a really unfortunate term for some of the raddest punk bands of the late '80s and early '90s, e.g. Moss Icon, Heroin, Honeywell, Native Nod, Indian Summer, etc. I'm a big fan.

Well, the term first came into use in the mid-'80s (I think Thrasher was the first place it turned up in print, if I remember right) to describe DC area bands who'd gotten sick of hardcore's de rigeur, like Embrace and Rites of Spring (Moss Icon was from Maryland, along with The Hated who also ruled). It wasn't really considered a seperate thing from punk and hardcore until bands like Jimmy Eat World, et al started breaking into the mainstream and the term became the cultural catchall we're all familiar with today.

Emo is arguing about emo on the internet.  Seriously, read tommy's article, then read the Wikipedia, and then stop saying the same things over and over.

just some comments. Fist i'm happy to see that it's the first time i read a discussion concerning "emo" when no one says "it's gay", i really take that personally, i mean i am gay and i am in no way affiliated with anything emo. Emo (i mean the new conception of emo like Panic at the Disco) suck ass i an belive me i know about sucking ass (bacause of the gay thing, by the way the comcept is rimming or anilingus).

Second, c'mon the Smiths? yeah, morrissey gets a little bit (or maybe a lot) whiney but still nothing to compare to Emo preteen kids at hot topic.

In fact i don't think Emo kids would know Morrissey or the Smiths, they are way to young and music tasteless. Maybe they would know "How soon is know" 'cause of the covers.

Third and last well emo (nowdays) is to emocore (though i'm not a big fan of emocore either, but at least it doesn't make me want to wish i was deaf) is what nu metal was to ac/dc. Get the idea?

AC/DC get kind of really boring after listening to them more than 3 times.  Plenty of emocore doesn't.  Advantage emocore.

Disagree.

AC/DC are not only Australian (++ party factor), they're classic, straight-out rock which is rare these days.

No, I agree with Dark Flame. AC/DC is probably one of the most overrated bands of all time. They've made the same album, hell, practically the same SONG about a dozen times. If you've heard Hell's Bells, you've heard more or less all AC/DC has to offer the music world at large.

That depends on your familiarity with hard/classic rock and the music you currently listen to. Since I listen to AC/DC as a part of my own mix and at leisure I don't find it to be repetative. Plus, they sound completely rad.

(lol taste talking)

And "overrated" is as subjective as music taste. Since for bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Black Sabbath I had only general ideas that they were "good" before listening to them, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they rocked my socks the fuck off. : D

My point in all of this is that I'm sure this disagreement will loop like a motherfucker.

Question: what does everyone dislike about emo?  The most common answer is its often self-important angst and dreariness, but a lot of songs that the people here seem to love have a lot of the same emotions.

Personally, I dislike Bright Eyes for their blandness of tune and Panic at the Disco for their arhythmic, phonemically cacophonous, forced rhymes (I can't even hear the tune), but neither of these seem inherent to the genre...neither really carries over to the other.

I know a guy who claims to hate "emo," but his definition carries over to pretty much everything indie, so he only listens to 70's pop.

I've never used that word.

I can't recall who coined it.

de-pop. that was me. hurr.

near lurker - most of the bands that fall into the fake emo category, well, suck. they sound whiney, only know 3 chords, the lyrics are attrocious, and they dress like they fell into a teen girl's closet not knowing what to do with themselves. there are some out there that are good, but they fall into their correct genre labels, so it's ok.

Emo is how I feel when I go to take a shit and one of my roommates is in the shower.

God I nearly fell off my chair when I read that.

Anyways, old emo is one of a long line of musical sub-genres which I am merely apathetic towards.

Modern emo, de-pop, emocore or whatever you want to call it is bad for every reason music can be: Awful lyrics and no musical ability.
Being a fan of metal I want to punch the store manager in the face whenever I see 'My Chemical Romance' or 'Panic! At the Disco' in the metal section. They are in no metal, in many ways they are barely music. Any genre where singers cry on stage after nearly every song (Brand New) or sings in an awful voice but becomes famous worldwide (Fall Out Boy) deserve binning.

But again I could say this about a whole list of other genres: nu-metal, rapcore, Jay Z/50 cent etc. Style hip-hop/rap/urban, Artic Monkeys style 'indie' I could go on.

In the end there is always going to be music which people think sucks. It's just a lot worse when that of sucky music either 'inspires' (Im using that word in the loosest way possible) people to commit violence against themselves or others.

As soon as I saw the thread name, I thought "Offshoot of '80s punk!" but I was beaten to that.

So I will say that general society now uses "emo" to describe "sensitive boys" who cry, cut themselves, wear girl's jeans, tight shirts, and more makeup than the average female. (I'm not a fan of that definition of emo.)

Whenever I see these people at school (who mainly listen to Panic! At the Disco, et al), I'm torn between asking them where I can buy the cute jeans they're wearing and wanting to cry (another reaction is sometimes asking them if they can, in less than 500 words, tell me the origins of emo and why they aspire to be categorized as such).

Hokay, so what would be the proper term for the angsty tagnuts you see in the black jeans that are far too tight for them and The Used/My Chemical Romance/etc. t-shirts? They're often seen in the company of a fairly "big" girl also wearing black jeans that are far too tight for them and a very unflattering stripey black and red top. They seem to form small flocks around shopping centres and a big "alternative/metal" music store in the city.

Um, benign tumors are not life-threatening.

Yes, they are.  They just aren't cancer.
Ehhh, hate to contaradict you but benign tumours *are* cancer. The difference between a benign tumour and a malignant one is that a benign cancer is encapsulated by a covering of tough tissue that basically stops it spreading. Each benign tumour has the potential to become malignant, which is basically when they chew through the tough tissue around them and can start spreading to other parts of the body.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works, anyway. I kinda remember my lecturer in second year talking about it in those terms.
