I'm going to see Isis this month. This is my first show encompassing any modern genre, ever, and I wondered if anyone had any general advice, like, don't trip in the mosh pit. (would anyone mosh to isis anyway?)

I probably have to drive both ways, so I won't be getting fucked up, since it's 2+ hours each way. Also, I'm a little bitch and I like my hearing, so I will probably be wearing earplugs.

That's all I've got so far.

So you go to classical concerts?
These ones are way different.  You get groped sometimes, plus you can open coughdrops without being looked at funny.
Enjoy yourself.

Yeah, I can pretty much recognize most major works by every choral and most orchestra composers from about 1200-1900. It's what I was raised on, I guess. Not to imply that I'm unfamiliar with modern genres, just that I've never put in the time and energy to go to a show before.

My first show (Sigur Ros) was amazing.  Good call on the earplugs, I missed them when I went and saw Sigur Ros.

But shouting at people for the next half hour or so after you leave the show is half the fun.

Yeh, my dorm is so noisy that they I almost always have them in my pocket just in case I need to sleep. I go to a little liberal arts school in the midwest, and we have some sick local shows here, so I'm familiar with the noise. The main difference is that here, if you fall in the pit, the people who pull you up probably know your name, or would when sober. Compared to driving 2 hours to a college town for a show, I have a feeling the local scene is rather friendly by comparison.

I'm going to see The Spill Canvas tomorrow night, so I'll just hang out here for a while as well. Though I've been to 'real shows' before, and a bunch of local shows, so it's not really my first time.

If there are people moshing at ISIS, then they're doing it wrong.

You've definitely got the right idea on the earplugs, I only started wearing earplugs to shows and band rehearsals over the past 12 months after going to shows for 5 years or so, and playing in bands for 3. I can definitely tell that I've lost some hearing. Also, sometimes shows sound better with hearing protection in, because it goes some ways to eliminating some of the bass frequencies that a lot of venues seem to go overboard on.

Agreed with the ear plugs filtering out some bass.

Seriously every gig ive been to lately has been so bass heavy its rediculous. Its not even defined bass, just thumpy mud.

I haaate it when venues go overboard on the volume.  It usually just sounds like crap.  My favorite venue is my favorite because they actually mix bands to sound good rather than to just hurt your ears

I don't like to wear earplugs, because if the bass is done right, the earplugs block out most of the noise, and you can feel it, but you can't really hear it, and its very unnerving.

Also I am totally metal, and only little babies wear earplugs.

Its actually got a lot to do with the fact that I work with earplugs in all day in a factory and the sensation keeps making me think I should probably mitre that aluminium tube or some shit.

Also, have fun at your first "real" show. I don't think Isis crowds are too rowdy, you should be pretty ok!

But shouting at people for the next half hour or so after you leave the show is half the fun.

Ahahaha, that's me at Dunkin Donuts, walking home after Mission of Burma. "Can I help you, sir?" "YEAH, I NEED A LARGE FRENCH VANILLA COFFEE AND A BLUEBERRY MUFFIN."

Have fun with Isis. I was going to see them next week, but I decided my monies were better spent on Ted Leo in May.

Eh, fuck it. Maybe I will go anyway.

I was at a Bass-Drums grindcore concert (which was pretty aggressive) and I went outside to put earplugs in and returned to the concert. I felt like a pussy.

Actually, two thirds of the people who were at that show left during that concert. It was pretty aggressive.

Oh gosh, I wish my first show were as cool as Isis. I went to go see (and trust me, it pains me to admit this) Linkin Park with the Family Values tour when I was in.. eighth grade, I think? Something like that. I wore combat boots and acted like I was cool.

You get to see *Isis.* I am jealous. Seriously. I have no advice but enjoy yourself, seriously. And take pictures. Pictures of shows = the best, because you can catch people doing some pretty fun stuff.

I just remembered how damn loud Isis were as well. Considering the size of the venues they play, they pack a lot of power.

Um, I am also not much of a proponent of earplugs. My family is renowned for 'cat ears' amongst most acquaintances all of us have, meaning that we can hear a pin drop in pretty much a 100 m radius. I have not lost any of that due to frequent show-going.

I don't know how old you are, but if you are younger than 30....you are gonna look like a super doofus with earplugs. Just don't stand right in front of the speakers. Not standing right in front of the speakers also carries the benefit of clearer sound. Most clubs DO have shitty mixing, so in my experience the further you can get away from them, the clearer the sound quality is going be.

Other than that, have fun? Hahaha. You will.

Converge are pretty much the loudest band I think I've ever seen.

I always had fun watching sound guys try to mix my band whenever we played; they usually had no idea what the hell to do with a guy that would use the same mic to play the trombone into that he would use to randomly grab and scream like a pissed-off moose...hehehe

I remember us being a pretty noisy group of dudes. Those were the days...

Haha the first show i went to was Death by Stereo over 2 years ago, if your not a big person i recommend avoiding the mosh pits unless you can hold your own agains the bigger guys.  Got my nose broken in the mosh pit about a year ago.  Earplugs are for people who like to be able to talk after the show to their buddies, then again if your drunk enough everyone is your buddy.  The loudest show ive been to was Behemeths release of Demigod, what an amazing show that was.

I'm 18, but there are two mitigating factors. First, I have long hair, so they're pretty well hidden. Second, I don't give a shit what people think.

Ear fetishists?

I'm going to see Isis in May, well looking forward to it. I saw Sleater-Kinney at the same venue and the sound was great!

Loudest show....probably one of the times I saw Johnny Truant play in Aberdeen.

Hey, I saw them a couple of weeks ago. They are freaking amazing live. The support band was the reason I wish I'd brought ear plugs though, they where way louder then Isis. They where good though!

I wish Jesu would come over here. :-( We are getting Boris and Sunn O))) in 2 months though so I can't complain.

Are you talking about Laura, or These Arms Are Snakes? Because they were both ridiculously loud, actually now that I think about it. There was roadworks going out the front, and it was creepy, when Laura got quieter, you realized "Oh shit there are some very loud fucking machines operating right outside" and it worked surprisingly well with the music.
