That's some tasty metal.
« on: 07 Mar 2007, 10:00 »

Recently, I've been listening to a lot more types of metal. In Flames is melodic, Lamb of God is a "love 'em or hate 'em" band. The Autumn Offering is pretty good stuff, although it seems to fit in with jaded metal nowadays. Venom are the fathers of black metal, and Death are the fathers of...well...Death Metal. And Slayer is always fun, and anybody who screams about Moby Dick and Cpt. Ahab is noteworthy.
For anyone who's into metal, I'd definately suggest going out to buy:

In Flames-Come Clarity/Clayman/Reroute to Remain
Lamb of God- Sacrament
The Autumn Offering- Embrace the Gutter
Venom- Metal Black
Death- Symbolic
Slayer- Christ Illuision
Mastodon- Leviathan

I've never really dug any of those bands, but as far as that genre goes, I'm going to continue my mantra of recommending

7 Angels 7 Plauges- Jhazmyne's Lullaby (they pretty much definaed this genre, and no one has really done it better since)
Coma Eternal- The Nuance Formula (somewhat mathy, all star group featuring members of End This Day, another seminal metalcore group, and Nehemiah)
You'll be glad you did.

Lamb of God is metal. Not as in, "Dude. They're so metal" but you'd classify them as "metal" not something else.
And I have Wages of Sin.
Arch Enemy kicks ass, I haven't listened to them in a while though. Got a little sick of them.

And to Jotun: I'll give those a try

I've started listening to Venom again. THEY'RE SO WONDEROUSLY RIDICULOUS! I love them.

Personally, my favorite In Flames album was The Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance.  Not that it matters.

I recommend any bands tied to either Sean Malone or Sean Reinert.

The Faceless is something I've just discovered, sort of an avant-death-garde thing.  Pretty cool actually.

I'm going to suggest Mastodon, who are metal technically because they are progressive, and too heavy to be rock and there is no such thing as progressive hardcore or sludge, since it's basically a contradiction on both counts. Therefore progressive metal.

For the thrash route I'm taking the easy way out and suggesting Megadeth, because in my mind they're the only one of the big four thrash bands to have kept up pace.

Apart from that, check out some Strapping Young Lad or SuidAkrA.

Warning: Extremely awesome melodic celtic black metal in link.

Anthrax and Megadeth are the good two of the Big Four. But even then, you have to ignore Megadeth's bad 90s albums.

But really, if we're talking about thrash, I'm just going to do the same thing I do in every thread and say Testament. No, they weren't one of the Big Four, but they are better than all of the Big Four combined. And I like Megadeth a lot.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Anders Friden Ruined In Flames for me...

"Lunar Strain" and especially the "Subterranean" ep are the best things they have put out, Colony was the last cd of theirs I bought and it pretty much turned me off the band for good.

Here's a few bands I'd reccomend checking out:

Therion
Summoning
Samael
Vintersorg

Here's a few bands I'd reccomend checking out:

Therion
Summoning
Samael
Vintersorg

based on the in flames and lamb of god I wouldnt really recommend any of those 4, even though they are all most excellent. I must, however, recommend Amon Amarth. Any Album works, though the first and last are good starting points ("Once Sent from the Golden Hall" or "With Oden On Our Side"). Their sound will basically never evolve, but their sound is so good that they are being smart by sticking with what works and not doing something new and foolish. Amon Amarth is way more badass than In Flames will ever be, plus, they headbang in sync (see any of their ridiculous music videos online).

Other good metal:
-Iced Earth
-Nevermore
-Jag Panzer
-Tad Morose

edit: also listen to
-Wintersun
-Behemoth
-Amorphis

I was trying to steer him away from those bands but meh, subtlety never works.

Amon Amrath are ok, only album of theirs I have is Versus the World, which is decent...

Behemoth are really good, though I do enjoy their earlier stuff slightly better then newer era...

I'm a huge Amon Amarth fan. Their latest is fantastic!

I definitely concur with Wintersun, Nevermore, Iced Earth (definitely my favourite metal band). Also, check out Einherjer. They were the band Jari M?enp?? from Wintersun sang/played guitar for originally and they've got some great fantasy/folk/thrash metal stuff going on.

If you want progressive but with the clean vocs, I'd suggest checking out Symphony X, Masterplan, Jorn Lande/Russell Allen - The Battle.
If you want straight up death metal, I'd check the bands I listed earlier adding Incantation, Bloodbath and Dying Fetus to the list.
Some cheesey warrior power metal, I'd check out Virgin Steele, Sabaton, Kiuas or Rhapsody.
Thrash: Kreator, Destruction, Exodus

And some heavy honourable mentions to The Crown, Finntroll, and Equillibrium.

Your thinking of Ensiferium, personally I think they are a lot better then Wintersun, more epic sounding less shred...

Einherjer are awesome though...

My absolute fav of the viking metal bands are Windir, absolutely amazing.

I haven't heard Windir. I have recently started listening to alot of Battlelore though, who are on the same wavelength as the rest of these folkish viking bands.

Honestly, I like to believe my palette is pretty wide-ranged. I love the last few In Flames albums, minus "Soundtrack to Your Escape"(Come Clarity, Clayman, Reroute to Remain). I got Subterranean a few weeks ago, and it's really good.
I like to seperate In Flames' earlier stuff from their recent projects. It's like listening to two different bands.

Black Sabbath with their S/T album 1970

Helter Skelter by the Beatles (1968) was arguably one of the first "metal" songs

Black Sabbath were the first true metal band, but Blue Cheer (IIRC) and Led Zeppelin had huge parts in the construction of metal and had quite a few metal songs each.

Its not that your original recommendations were faulty by any means, but I think easing into things is better than going straight for the different stuff. Based on the bands he mentioned, I figured something like summoning would cause "hm...snooze, wake me up when we get to mordor.", and therion would cause a "wtf opera... dragon rouge cult!!1 lol". know what I mean?

otherwise, name dropping is a strategy worth trying.

prog and/or power
at vance
avantasia
ayreon
blind guardian
demons & wizards
dream evil
edguy
elvenking
falconer
gamma ray
hammerfall

I finally got Oath Bound and am really enjoying it. I do kind of think summoning is a bit out there for accessibility, but you saw by my musical recommendations that Im more into power metal. Expiremental/ambient or not, they are easily my favorite black metal band. I dont have all their albums, but I love Nightshade Forests, especially the track Mirkwood. so the circle comes full and I confess, Summoning is very tasty metal.

Oath bound was easily the best album released last year I really like the guitar style they use on that one, the Arpeggio riffs as Protector calls them, so epic sounding. There's some really good tracks on it "Might and Glory" and "Land of the Dead" are stand outs, some the best songs they've composed since Stronghold IMO.

There's a really good interview with them here if your interested in it:  http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/showinterview.php?id=1304

Here's a pretty good quote from it:

Silenius: I think the concept of Summoning is very clear and I repeat it in each interview that our main aim is not only to make a musical translation of the Middle Earth concept, but to give the listener a perfect piece of musical escapism of modern world's stress and insecurity.  Of course our music is entertainment but not this kind of party entertainment for the metal disco. I think our music is a very personal piece of art which is best to consume while being alone reading a book or to hear on walkman during extended walks through mountains, huge forests or nature in general. I think the combination between ancient mythology and a kind of brace to pure and wild nature was a big essence of Tolkien's work and so it is a big essence of within our music too.

Really sums up what Summoning is about to me.  Their music really does present you with a form of escapism, it's just so atmospheric and epic, you can't help but get drawn into the themes and motifs that their singing about.

I've had the opposite experience to you with Summoning, I don't find there is that much of a barrier towards their enjoyment at all, I've managed to get quite a few of my non metal friends into them just by playing them in my car or at home and so on. I really think they are one of those bands people can get into regardless of their tastes.

Xasthur
Nachmystium
Katharsis
Deathspell Omega
Ameseours

Hmm Katharisis are German abut they are excellent anyway...

If you like Deathspell, you should also check out Clandestine Blaze, it's their singers other band, their last album was incredibly good.

As far as Recent BM goes Countess from Holland are a favorite band of mine, nice raw production with some very nice epic riffs.

Morrigan are also a very nice band, they play Celtic influenced BM, They have a really nice thrashy riffs kind of like Blood Fire Death or Under the Sign era Bathory.

Melechesh are also very original and excellent, Middle Eastern influenced BM, featuring Proscriptor from Absu on Drums, highly reccomended.
