Favorite Animes?
« on: 12 Mar 2007, 16:15 »

I think something on this has been posted before, but not since i registered.  I went through some of the old posts and was reading stuff about FLCL and Evangelion and i got curious.

Mine are: FLCL, Trigun, Hayao Miyazaki(sp?) stuff, and i really really liked Neon Genesis Evangelion, though i only saw a few of the early episodes.  Others i like are...Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and umm...Betterman.  I haven't seen Betterman in ages, and it was confusing as hell.

Haha! You've seen FLCL and you think Betterman is confusing? You're funny.

I really like Bleach, Trigun, Fruits Baskets, Blu Gender, Big-O, Neon Genesis, Full Metal Alchemist, Berserk!, Death Note, Ranma 1/2, and some others that I don't know the name of (there are all Japaneses with subtitles...).

I personally like to stick to mangas. They seem to be a lot less funimation-ated. Of course in English though.

Honey and Clover was a really cute series and I also enjoyed Escaflowne. Other than that, the only anime I watch are Hayao Miyazaki movies.

Betterman was confusing as fuck, and the underlying meanings to FLCL still elude me... x_x  Of course i missed a bunch of episodes of Betterman so i had a bunch of plot holes.  I also forgot: .hack//sign  i've been watching it in Japanese.

.hack//sign is probably my favorite Anime i've seen, the soundtrack is incredible.

I'm not a huge Anime fan, my flat mate on the otherhand is pretty obsessed with it:

Anyway, stuff I've really liked

Noir
Aquarian Age: Sign for Evolution
Mononoke Hime
Evangellion: Neon Genesis

Neon Genesis : Evangelion takes the cake for me.

Few people realise, I think, how well it comments on and tells truths about real life... through giant robot battles.

Eva was the first anime I watched, and I have only watched it all the way through once. I prefer the cutesy anime (though I don't like to admit it), such as Fruits Basket, Angelic Layer and Ah! My Goddess. My brother and I have conflicting opinions over anime, so he has the more serious stuff, which I try and watch every now and then. I must sdmit I have a very soft spot for Trigun, though I don't watch it that often.

I agree with the manga compared to anime, though sometimes the stories are changed to be a bit more logical. Also, I watch it in Japanese with subtitles rather than in English, since It's not very often that the voice actors sound the same. Plus mispronunciation of character names irk me too much.

That reminds me my flatmate was trying to get some Naruto (something I can't stand) and accidently downloaded an anime called "5 Centimeters Per Second" I thought it was really really awesome, was kind of like a romance movie or something but in anime format, seemed very true to life for me and actually made me quite sad in some places, was suprised how much I enjoyed it.

I usually have a strong reaction to anime.  If I like it, I'll watch it obsessively; if I don't, I'll throw rocks at its car.  I cut my teeth on Dragon Ball Z at first, but that affair didn't last long.  Cowboy Bebop was the anime that really ruined me, and is still probably my favorite (I have a stuffed Ein at home).

Other anime that I liked:
Trigun
Samurai Champloo (somewhat - the off-plot episodes are kind of tedious and silly)
FLCL
YuYu Hakusho (well, it started strong and kind of petered out)
Full Metal Alchemist
Pretty much anything Miyazaki.

There are a number of other non-anime cartoons I enjoy as well.

Since the premiere I have found Bleach strangely interesting , and I pretty much love Eureka Seven. My anime is probably Trigun, simply because everything about it seems very believable (not necessarily the events or the technology.. but the characters and the settings are very capturing.) One of the earliest animes I saw that I still enjoy was Final Fantasy: Legend Of The Crystals, which was an anime sequel to Final Fantasy V.

The most humorous anime I've seen is probably Super Milk Chan.

For one mood: any Miyazaki film, but "Nausicaa" is the best.

For a darker mood: Ghost in the Shell (1 and 2, not the series), Jin-Roh: the Wolf Brigade, Serial Experiments Lain

For a kick-ass mood: Hellsing

For a serious mood: Monster (www.soldats.net - 74 episodes ... I think it's worth it, of course)

I haven't seen too many anime movies, and I have never seen a Miyazaki film, but I will say that Princess Mononoke and Ghost in the Shell were very good. Some of my favorite series were Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, and FLCL.

Also, I will sacrifice about five hundred million man-points to say that I really enjoyed the majority of Azumanga Diaoh and I still have the soundtrack from Chobits on my computer. (I wouldn't recommend the series as much as the soundtrack for Chobits)

Yeah I saw Princess Mononoke without subtitles, only picked up about a quarter of the dialogue and didn't understand much of the mythology parts but I still loved it very much.

I happened to see that too, for more or less the same reason.  I put it on while I was getting ready to go out one night and wound up getting sucked into it.  It made me kinda sad because I'm not really in love or anything at this point and I kind of miss those feelings.  Completely ruined the go out, party, and get drunk with random girls mood I was in.

Princess Mononoke is a Miyazaki, so you have seen one! Out of his, I think that one, Nausicaa, and Spirited Away are the best.

Yeah I agree Linds,  my copy of Spirited Away got stolen in the divorce proceedings when I broke up with one of my exes when I moved down here to Ohio.  She fell in love with that movie the first time we watched it, I felt like it was relatively fair for her to keep it.

I have seen many series in the past. Probably not a fraction of what other people have seen, but I'd like to think that I've seen a fair share amount of anime. I have downloaded probably around 800gigs worth of fan subbed anime via bittorent.

Some that have stood out to me are...

-Trigun. For those who have seen the series, there is little to explain about this.

-Full Metal Alchemist. One of my all-time-favorites. I followed it religiously while it was coming out in Japan and being fansubbed. I literally almost cried tears of unimaginable sadness when it got licensed. Almost...

-Full Metal Panic/Fumoffu/TSR: Story line is very involved and gripping, and animation is striking. Fumoffu is very light hearted and hilarious.

-Shuffle!:  Based off of a Hentai dating sim in Japan. The actual series offers lots of fan-service with its cliche harem style story of 5 girls going after one guy and slice of life high school story, but the second half of the series is what really made the the series as a whole pop up. After a happy go lucky story for 11 episodes, we find out each girl's "deep dark secret" of sorts which adds quite a bit of drama to the story.

-School Rumble/The Second Semester: Great anime. Very funny slice of life high school anime. The main characters all have different relationship problems, often intertwining with each other.

-The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi: Lots of laughs and beautifully animated. The order of the episodes is completely out of whack and not in chronological order. But after watching the "last" episode of the series, you can start to see where everything fits in. I've watched different episodes various times, and I always seem to find things that would connect that episode to different ones. In any case, go watch this.

-Samurai Champloo: Mix of traditional Japanese history and Hip-Hop. I liked this series very much for its use of the elements of Hip-Hop since I grew up exposed to them.

-Prince of Tennis: Some of you will probably ridicule me for this one, but I really liked it. Although MANY of the things they do are completely unrealistic, it just makes you think "what if?" It is the only series over 50 episodes [178 in total for the series, a movie, and an OVA series] that I've ever had the patience to keep up with. It does become a bit "DBZ style" in the later episodes with the completely over dramatization of the feeling they put in their special moves, but hey, it's a bit more fun that way.

-Cowboy Bebop: Enough said.

-Yakiyake! Japan: Anime about a kid trying ot make a national bread for Japan, called Japan. It is a pun, using the Japanese word for bread, "pan" and the name of the country. Clever, right? The series is actually very exciting and filled with drama. Highly recommended.

That's all I can think of as of right now, perhaps I'll add more when I think of them/not as lazy.

The anime I like?
Probably:
Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Excel Saga
Miyazaki
Ghost in the Shell Movies
.hack//sign
Perfect Blue (was pretty fun?)
Ninja Scroll (The movie.)
I can't say much for Fullmetal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, or Trigun though.
Okay, fine, Trigun.

Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try. - Personal favorites. Awesome series. DNDish with plenty of comedy.

Ghost in the shell (All) - Just a great anime. More adult oriented.

Tenchi Muyo GXP - Funny, with great Tenchi antics but oddly does not feature Tenchi himself.

Trigun - Classic anime. Nuff said.

Cowboy Bebop - Nother classic.

NGE - Ending gets a bit dark for me, but if you skip the last 2 episodes and go straight to the movie, its really good.

Ruroni Kenshin - Awesome.

Outlaw Star - Really good.

Fruits Basket - More cerebral than most anime. More emotional than comedic.

YuYu Hakusho - Decent anime with a decent story.

Dragon Ball (all) - Dragonball. Nuff said.

Kiddy Grade - Interesting series. Decent plot.

Baki the Grappler - Beat em up series. Boy trains, boy fights, boy wins. Boy has issues with parents.

Blue Gender - Earth besieged by uber-bugs. Mecha fighting bugs. Whee!

Galaxy Railways wasn't too bad, FLCL is good, Inuyasha is worth a rent.

That'd be Prince of Tennis.

And just to get this out there, I have a deep hatred for English dubs of anime. I hear there are good dubs out there, but most voice actors just don't match the character that I remember from watching the anime in Japanese. They take out most, if not all, feeling in the character's voice. I got my start on anime watching it with subtitles. I've gotten used to it like that, and that's how I like it. The only anime I've watched dubbed in English in its entirety was Ronin Warriors, if any of you remember it. And this was only to relive childhood memories. I love that anime, but I just wish I could get it in the original Japanese.

Sorry for the rant, I'll go back to lurking now.

I enjoy Cowboy Bebop quite a bit, both the movie and the show. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust I thought was very enjoyable. But without a doubt, my FAVORITE is pretty much everything I've seen by Miyazaki. I just finished watching Howl's Moving Castle which was pretty stellar. Spirited Away is one of those movies that, whenever I am having one of those days that is just utter dogshit, I pop it in and by the time it's done I feel 1000 times better about everything.

Noir, Berserk, Excel Saga, Perfect Blue, FLCL, Monster, Hajime No Ippo, episodes of Cowboy Bebop that revolve only around Spike and his past (Esp eps 5, 25-26).

I actually kinda despise NGE.  It does that thing where they throw a bunch of metaphysical white noise at a dark atmosphere with a sense of grandeur to create the false appearance of depth.  (You know, like Final Fantasy games.)

To quote a friend of mine, "It's got symbolism.  Symbolism is deep, right?"

I've seen a lot of anime I like, but I don't like the general approach to anime.  The spiky haired aloof main characters who can shoot huge super-beams out of their butts if they concentrate hard enough, the rampant fanservice, the apocolyptic grandeur, the broody misanthropy, the clumsy superficial symbolism.

I'm waiting for Monster to get licensed in the US so I don't have to deal with Bittorrent, but unfortunately the anime that sells to adults in the US is the anime that sells to thirteen year olds in Japan.

Edit:  Oh yeah, also the prequel OVA to Rurouni Kenshin.  I forgot about that one.  I never got into the series, a bit too formulaic.

I am not a huge Anime fan but I have watched a fair few, mainly movie-lengths rather than series. My favourite series is probably Hellsing, my favourite movie Blood: The Last Vampire, but then I do own two Ah! My Goddess DVDs and a couple of posters from Chinatown.

Sorcerous Stabber: Orphen is the hottest thing ever to be drawn (there's actually an Orphen cosplay outfit stashed in our wardrobe) but I've only seen a handful of episodes.

My boyfriend is trying to get me to torrent some uncut subtitled DragonBall Z episodes, but nobody seems to be seeding them. Pah.

I thought the phillosophical aspects was what made Evangelion really good, granted they were a bit oblique in some parts, but mostly they were spot on, it really starts to get really good when the last Angel shows up, after that the series is superb. "End of Evangelion" is the best thing about NGE, I love the last 45 minutes or so of it, where you're inside Shinji's head. Especially the part where the animation cuts out to live action video and you've got that whole monologue on what it means to dream. I disagree with you completely here I  didn't think it was that shallow of superficial at all it was pretty critical to the course of the story and Shinji's acceptance of himself...

The ending to the movie reminded me a lot of "Nausea" by Jean by Sartre, I think Existentiallism played a pretty huge roll in the whole series, as each of the three kids grappled with what their existence meant to ach of them.

Granted I haven't watched a huge amount of Anime but I thought .Hack//Sign was a fairly similar series, both foccused on character development and the concept of characters grappling with responsibilities.

Oh! I forgot Satoshi Kon. He's made some of the slickest films in anime, some of my personal favorites (ie all of his movies):

Perfect Blue (fun? get some help. good? definitely.)

Tokyo Godfathers (   )

Millenium Actress (an amazing exploration of people's relationship to their popular mythology/culture. the last line in this movie is amazing.)

and I can't wait for Paprika to come out in America. it looks amazing

I'm a huge geek, I'll be here a while.

It's a tie between Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Cowboy Bebop, with FLCL and Evangelion close behind.

I think I should say it now, I'm a huge Production I.G. fanboy, I enjoyed IGPX. I'll follow anything related to these two series: Ghost in the Shell -- as in I own both movies, seen both series, read the mangas, waiting for Solid State Society, etc. and the Blood: The Last Vampire line -- the novels, the tv series based on the movie, that horrible, horrible Blood: 200(2)0.

My favorite series:

It's a tie between Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Cowboy Bebop. With Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL right behind that. It's sad, I've watched FLCL so many times I can more or less quote it on command. And I actually understood most, if not all, of it. Lots of sex-stuffs.

I enjoyed: Blood+ -- some of the best openings I've ever seen s'true --, Black Lagoon Ergo Proxy, Samurai Champloo, Eureka Seven, Trigun, Hellsing, Naruto--Shippuden is really, really good--, Bleach, Outlaw Star, Berserk, Last Exile, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Paranoia Agent, Code Geass -- most Gundam I dislike, but I hold a special place in my heart for the 08th MS Team and the original Gundam series, Azumanga Daioh, Serial Experiments Lain, I'm digging Code Geass, Death Note, D.Gray-man, Blue Submarine no.6. Shit, I'll be here for a while. You get the picture. I've watched a lot. You can blame Toonami for that. Full Metal Alchemist was good, but ugh, the fan-boys-girls annoy me a lot. Same with most animes.

As for movies:

Both Ghost in the Shell movies, some Miyazaki films, Blood: The Last Vampire, End of Evangelion, the Cowboy Bebop movie, erm...man, Paprika is going to be awesome.

I actually prefer some dubs to the original voices. Animes like Ghost in the Shell: SAC and Cowboy Bebop have very good dubs, with actors who sound close enough to the original to make it work while still making the characters their own. I mean, the Major's English voice actor is, in my opinion, superior to the original voice actor because man, she's commanding. And Cowboy Bebop, that's just an amazing dub, isn't it? I like it when teenagers sound like teenagers, you know? Renton from the Eureka Seven dub actually sounds like a teenager, and not a little girl. That's why I prefer dub Shinji to the original one, he doesn't sound like a girl.

Hmmm...I think I prefer Manga, but it's so damn expensive... I started going to my college's Anime Club w/ a friend, which has caused me to start downloading...mostly stuff we watch there, but also a lot of yaoi... egad.

But so far, I really like (even if I haven't seen all of it): Karin (Chibi Vampire), Bleach, Ouran High School Host Club, Princess Princess, Pumpkin Scissors, Full Metal Alchamist, Afro Samurai, and a few that I can either not spell, or pronounce for a rough spelling...

I picked up the complete box set of Bebop at WaldenBooks (I think) for like $6. Real great buy if you like manga, and its traditional style.

A must have if you like Bebop.

I cast my vote for Saint Seiya... I'm mexican, and we go this series in the mid 90's in spanish... It totally rocked my 14 year old mind with all the battles and blood and gore, and mythological mayhem...I agree with all those who enjoyed Naussica, but in mexico we got the cheap american edit...boo...other series that I really enjoy are Fullmetal alchemist (Nissan..!!!) and samurai X...

I don't really like anime now but I used to be a huge anime fan back in the day... so certain series still hold sentimental value for me. Series like the good old Rurouni Kenshin (I mostly read the manga more than watched the anime), Shadow Skill, Cowboy Bebop, and of course... Hellsing.

Thought I would ask this here, and not waste a new thread.  Has anyone seen Afro Samurai?  If so, what did you think?  The idea of Samuel Jackson as a samurai, while interesting, makes me kind of iffy on it.  I mean, I could just picture him cutting someone in half and screaming, "How you like dat, mothaf****!  I'm am motha f***in samurai, bitch!!!!!"  So please let me know before I waste an hour or two of my life...

I liked it Afro Samuri. We watched it in the Anmie club I go to. It's more of a guy show, obviously, so I'm sure I wasn't completely appreiciative of it, but it was good.
