Love a band but they broke up too soon, or even worse, still around but haven't put out anything new in forever?

my band: Big Dumb Face

for those of you not familiar with them, this was the side project of Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland. It was goofy, loud, and made little or no sense at all...I loved it. Wes had plans to restart the band after he left Limp Bizkit and renaming it Eat The Day, but things fell through, and Fred Durst managed to get Wes to come back...and that's about it.

so ya, post em if you got em.

I'd sell my left testicle to see another Dispatch and Sublime show. I guess I'll have to settle for watching the Blue Man Group deflower a crowd with confetti cannons.

I wish that Pink Floyd would release a last album, even with the Gilmour-led lineup, even a soundtrack, just to get it out of the way. They've been on 'indefinite hiatus' for over a decade. Either that or just ACTUALLY break up.

Namely it makes me sad that a whole generation of kids will never get to see [Fugazi] play live.

That is pretty much what I was going to say.  I'm part of said generation, and I really want to see them play live.

    • I say things sometimes.

I was going to say the Police, but then I was like "OHSHITS THEY ALREADY ARE"

For those who don't know, the Police actually managed to make Sting stop being a dick long enough for one last tour.  For anybody close by and interested, they're playing Virgin Fest in Baltimore this summer.

But, in the same realm, I'd have to say Zeppelin.  Like, actual Zeppelin, not just Robert Plant.

One of my favorite pop-punk bands ever, Race the Sun, broke up before they released their sophomore album.  Which sucked because they had a bunch of demos already recorded and stuff that were really good.  It saddened me when they announced their last tour.

I'm of the opinion that once a band has broken up, it should never reform. Since, as far as I can tell, most times bands reform, it is without key members, and as such, they are basically nothing more than a tribute act. Or, the band members have moved on musically since the group broke up, and the material is so different people will split up the records into two eras, the good, early stuff, and the bad, late stuff.
But that's just my opinion and I tend to make stuff up based on ridiculous generalizations, and as such I am probably wrong.
That said, I am also of the generation of people who will never get to see Fugazi live, and this disappoints me greatly. I would also like to see a pre-GNFPWLBN Modest Mouse gig, a Walkyier-era Skyclad, Neutral Milk Hotel.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw this thread.  Also, the original line-up of Don Caballero, and Slint (THEY ARE PLAYING SOME OBSCURE FESTIVAL IN SPAIN WHICH I CANNOT POSSIBLY GET TO).

Well they never really broke up and they are two separate groups. Plus, Curtis's most important facet is probably his lyrics more than anything, for which Sumner is regularly criticised.

Wait, you guys are just joking about Guns N Roses right?? Am I posting on the right message board??

All I can think of is bands that broke up for seemingly no reason and should stop playing with us already and just get back together. But here's my list anyway. Beta Band (aren't most of the guys in this band in some new band together??), Guided By Voices (Tobin's been out of the band for years, who exactly was Pollard breaking up with?? The latest random hacks he rounded up to play his alcohol soaked genius??), Microphones (again, why a fucking name change?? It's basically one guy and a bunch of helping hands), My Bloody Valentine/Neutral Milk Hotel (for shit's sake, release something even if it sucks and then the pressure will be off and you can get back to making good music without us paying attention again), Phish (Trey Anastasio's music has been on an absolute nosedive since 2004, even Coventry was better than his solo band), Pavement (I'd like to think that around 2009 we'll start to hear concrete details on a Pavement reunion because by then they'll all be grown men who can function properly and not let Stephen Malkmus run all over them again), Pearl Jam (actually I just want these guys to break up and stop releasing the same competent-but-boring album every two years...try something else!!), Sufjan Stevens (you've got...48 more States to go, so please stop touring already).

Guns N Roses, but with Buckethead. He was in the band.

Apart from that silliness, off the top of my head I'd have to say Machine Gun Fellatio.

Guns n Roses is a good call. With the proper line-up it would be sweet. Might even cover for Axel's appauling vocals these days.

Led Zep would have been my first pick by a long shot but since we can't 'raise from the dead' Id love to see Pink Floyd settle their differences and create one final masterpiece.

Two bands for me:

Emperor,

They are back touring now but I sadly don't think they'll ever release another album.  I am in the minority that think Prometheus was a fucking masterpeice and I absolutely love Ihsahn's work in Peccatum and too a lesser extent he's Solo album. As for Samoth, well I like some Zyklon but I prefer the direction Ihsahn went in. I would be so over the moon if they announced a new album particular if Ihshan was the composer.

Burzum,

Varg may be an idiot but he writes insanely good music,  if he gets out of jail, I hope he releases more.

I've got nothing really, although I would like to see Ash Ra Tempel make another album like their self-titled. But I think some of them are dead.

Since I can't raise the dead, that leaves out Lush.

So, how about Orbital, Opal (I'll take Kendra Smith over Hope Sandoval any day), Curve (1991 lineup) and Rage Against the Machine.

Pavement, Wizo. Sucks for me that Wizo broke up the year before I found out about them. Raising the dead I would say the Texas Tornadoes (R.I.P. Freddy Fender and many of the others), because it's all the fun of listening to Mexican radio but I can actually understand it. I would kill to have accordion-playing skills of that quality.

I must third both Neutral Milk Hotel and The Unicorns and agree that Islands simply isn't good enough. Sure it's the same singers but "Return to the Sea" is no "Who Will Cut Our Hair...."
I'm a tad surprised no one's said Godspeed You! Black Emperor, probably the greatest post rock bands ever. Their "Lift Your Skinny Fists..." album is among my favorite records of all time. A Silver Mt. Zion just doesn't cut it for me so another Godspeed album (and since they're not really broken up and are rumored to be working on stuff including studio versions of new material performed live) it's not inconceivable. Sadly this makes me want a new album even more.

There are two live recorded NEW Godspeed songs about, which they played on their final tour: Albanian and Gamalan. Should be relatively easy to find on a software sharing program like Soulseek. Apparently they're just waiting for people to stop pissing around in solo projects/getting married to ex-head of states sons to record it.
Silver Mt Zion are still awesome though, can't wait to see them at the end of the month.

Another vote for Fugazi, even though I did catch them live. The Argument is a cracking album, and it'd be interesting to see where they go next.

I'd love the opportunity to see Drive Like Jehu and Rodan though. The latter are certainly not getting back together apparently.

The two tracks are called 'Albanian' and 'Gamalan'...  perhaps I should of made that clearer.

I really wish Ulver would release another metal, or even folk, album. I know progress is a good thing, but they were much better at the folk/black thing than they are at what they are doing now.

I'd say thats pretty debateable, there's a hel of a lot more poeple whom like newer Ulver then their BM albums, besides, there's a heap of bands realesing stuff that sounds like bm era Ulver. The album wouldn't be unique anymore.
