I listened to a Mastadon song, and it sounded like punk more than metal.  I guess need to listen to more Mastadon.  :|

I know that's just the standard thing to say in threads about metal, but I don't really see Khar recommending anything that actually sounds like Mastodon.

And for the record, Mastodon are a metal band, but there's a fairly hefty Melvins and old school hardcore (and plenty else!) influence in there as well as your typical Slayer riffs.

If you're actually serious about getting into metal, then I guess you can't go wrong with the basics; Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, early Metallica, At the Gates, Dark Tranquility, Carcass, early In Flames, Kreator.

Those in general are the band you should check out.
SuidAkrA is a black melodic death metal band with celtic influence that I like a lot.

Also, Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. And Angra.

Mastodon is about the closest to metalcore that I can tolerate.  It's actually really nice proggy/sludgy metal, but sometimes I just wish they would lay off with the yelling.  Then again, hardcore isn't my thing, so ymmv.

Standard Melodic Death Metal starter pack (minus what's been mentioned already): Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Kalmah, Wintersun, and Opeth.  (ok, MDM may not be the genre for some of those, but you know what I mean).

Most of these are pretty good recommendations. I'm no metal expert but if you'd like to hear some more bands who're basically metal but a little different to the traditional stuff (much like Mastadon, and drawing on some of the same influences like hardcore) I'd recommend investigating Knut, Taint, Keelhaul, Old Man Gloom, Men In Search of The Perfect Weapon and Snowblood.

hmmm...lots of stuff mentioned already lets go by genre...all lists are in the order they come to my head..recomended listening is porbvably closer to essential artist but what ever

NWOBHM/heavy metal...this is basically early metal and is increadibly good if your trying to avoid "grunt" vocals amazingly alot of the bands here are still going from back in the 70's
recomended listening
Angel Witch by Angel Witch
The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden
Paranoid by Black Sabath
Pain Killer by Judas Priest
British Steel by Judas Priest
Ace of Spades by Mot?rhead
Overkill by Mot?rhead
No Sleep 'til Hammersmith by Mot?rhead
The White Album/Lightning to the Nations by Diamond Head
Welcome to Hell by Venom                     }
Melissa by Mercyful Fate                          }this is quite satanic music on these three listner beware
Don't Break the Oath by Mercyful Fate     }

Thrash Metal...This was pretty much the evolution of NWOBHM and heavy metal in to the modern metal music of today it took what had already been done and added speed
recommended listening...other people on the forums more versed in this genre will give you a better list for it but this is pretty much the "classic" albums of the genre
Reign in Blood by Slayer
Master of Puppets by Metallica
The Gathering by Testament
Peace Sells but Who's Buying by Megadeth
Spreading the Disease by Anthrax

Power Metal...this is the cheesiest music you will ever find it consists of over done riffs and the worst/(or best depending how you look at it) lyrics around
recommended listening...also not a good genre for me to tell you about in terms of individual artist i will tell you artists though
Grave Digger
Running Wild
Blind Guardian
Dragon Force (wow my first modern band)
Heloween
Manowar
Sonata Arctica

Doom Metal...this genre has a very diverse classification the over all theme being low notes played with alot of distortion, the vocals here can vary from clean to a slight grunt but nothing which should be too taxing on the hearing
Pink by Boris
Flight of the Behemoth by Sunn O))) -(pronounced sun)
Black 1 by Sunn O)))
Dopethrone by Electric Wizard
Let us Prey by Electric Wizard
Tales of Creation by Candlemass
Somewhere Along the Highway by Cult of Luna
unfortunatly for you i'm very biassed towards stoner doom if you want some more variation just ask around

Progressive Metal...this genre is essentially showing off with a guitar it is very closly linked with power metal but generally not as cheesy and usually more guitar solos
recommended listening
Operation Mindcrime by Queensr?che
Empire by Queensr?che
Octavarium by Dreamtheatre
Liquid Tension Experiment by Liquid Tension Experiment
?nima by Tool
Surfing With the Alien by Joe Satriani

Death Metal...this genre introduces grunt lyrics which is why i've kept these for last generally fast drumming...not really sure how to describe it but probably the most popular metal genre so give it a try...most of this will be melodic death metal mainly because it's my favorite genre once again ask around for some more recomendations if you like this stuff
recomended listening
The Sound of Perseverence by Death
Human by Death
Deliverence by Opeth
Wintersun by Wintersun
Anthems of Rebellion by Arch Enemy
Altars of Madness by Morbid Angel

Folk Metal...exactly what it says folk music crossed with various kinds of metal...only two recomendations here
Finntroll - get their whole discography (or at least Nattf?dd and Jaktens Tid)
and
Spirit of the forest by Korpiklanni

Black Metal...typified by high pitched grunt vocals and guitar and drums being played overly fast withou tmuch skill on the part of the players...at least in most cases...i like the other kind...also there is nearly always satanic themes and lyrics running through this genre of metal
recomended listening
Deathcrush by Mayem
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant by Dimmu Borgir
Hellfire by 1349
Pentagram by Gorgoroth
Sons of Northern Darkness by Imortal
Djinn by Melechesh
Blood, Fire, Death by Bathory
Engraved In Black by Graveworm

Gridcore...this is actually an offshoot hardcore punk...not that you'd know it i'm focusing on the offshoots deathgrind and goregrind here, this genre is essentially playing every instrument as fast as possible the lyrics are incomprehensible although viewing the lyrics booklets will let you discover that the are nearly always about blood, death and gore...
recomended listening...i don't recomend you listen to this at all if your new to metal becasue this will turn you off it for life unless you've led up to it and build somekindof resistence to it...at least that's my opinion but if you must
Scum by Napalm Death
Bring on the Dead by Fuck!...I'm Dead
The Berzerker by The Berzerker
Put on Your Rosy Red Glasses by The Number 12 Looks Like You (if you want to be finicky you can actually classify this as screamo...i know i do)
Symphonies Of Sickness by Carcass
Gore Metal by Exhumed
pick up something by Anal Cunt...i don't know what i don't listen to them

metalcore...this is a genre to avoid at all costs if possible...although i did used to be a fan...if you do feel like listening to it i would recomend finding a copy of an album called
Reason for my Justice by Myproof
...also Lamb of God are meant to be good but i've never bothered to investigate

Well a lot of the well known albums and artists have been listed so I thought I'd list some lesser known stuff in my collection that I think are definate gems.

Astriaal - Renascent Misanthropy
Desaster - Tyrants of the Netherworld
Alchemist - Lunasphere
Gehenna - Seen Through Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell)
Ildjarn - Forest Poetry
Portal - Seepia
Countess - Book of the Heretic
Divine Eve - As the Angels Weep
Peccatum - Amor Fati
Myrddraal - Blood on the Mountains
Psycroptic - The Scepter of the Ancients
Tearstained - Monumental in it's Sorrow

I consider all these to be absolute masterpeices, which the metal community at large has seemed to ignore.

If you want something similar to Mastodon yet quite different, I suggest these four releases:
Baroness - First and Second(their two EPs)
Kylesa - Time Will Fuse Its Worth
Akimbo - Elephantine

Kylesa in particular is fantastic and one of the best albums of 2006.

Lamb of God are atrocious, and not metalcore. Avoid. It's also really more hardcore than metal so probably not worth investigating if you're just interested in metal rather than heavy music in general. But if you do want to have a look get Converge - Jane Doe, I'd say it's the best the genre's managed. Appreciation of metalcore does require a tolerance for lots of chug, people being utterly humourless about their veganism and of course Belgians, so it's not for everyone.

i think No Heroes would be more accessible for someone just getting into converge.
i second neurosis.

No Heroes is also a much weaker album and not really a good representation of metalcore. But Jane Doe is fairly battering, so perhaps Petitioning The Empty Sky would be a better idea since it does have their 'hit' on it after all.

Gridgm's and Der Turm's lists are pretty good, but I'd suggest My Arms, Your Hearse or Blackwater Park for Opeth and Wages of Sin for Arch Enemy instead of the albums Gridgm listed. Also, Rust in Peace by Megadeth is suspiciously missing from the thrash list, and I would suggest adding Caravan Beyond Redemption by Cathedral to the doom list.

And Dream Theater is an American band, so their name is spelled the American way.

And nobody has mentioned Arsis yet. Listen to Arsis.

I was listening to Lust of the Maggots Conquest earlier this week, and couldn't believe James Malone was human.  He plays sweeps better than just about everyone else I've heard, the only possible exception being Santiago Dobles.

Jeph has mentioned several great bands in QC: Agalloch, Russian Circles, Mastodon, The Sword, Isis, & Arch Enemy among others. Bands are starting to experiment with new sounds and getting more & more talented. Main stream bands like In Flames & Dragon Force show that Metal can have a more pop feel without getting into shitty 80's Hair Metal cheese or Nu-Metal posturing.

Underground: Ash & Elm, Divinity Destroyed, Skyforger, Royal Hunt, Turisas, With Daggers Drawn, Code, Machine Men, JT Bruce, Dimension Zero, & Dragon Land

Mainstream: The Gathering, Manowar, Amon Amarth, Meshuggah, Rhapsody of Fire, Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Sworn Enemy, The End, At The Gates, &  Gojira

Why don't you try listening to some online heavy metal radio stations? That way, when you do hear a song from an artist that you find interesting, you can take note of it and go search for the record. There are all sorts of fantastic underground heavy metal stations out there, you shouldn't have any problems finding one.
