I was thinking we could use this thread for people to post upcoming shows they will be attending, then revisit with a little review on how the show went.... I'm always looking to see some live shows, but often have to make the decision to (a) leave one show off, or (b) be broke. I wouldn't want to miss out on a good show, so let's put our heads together & have fun. Disclaimer: I listen to a pretty wide variety of music, & won't knock anyone's taste in music. I'm always looking for something new. The object is to find a band that will potentially change your life, stop the war, feed the hungry & maybe even make you dance a little bit......

Last concert attended: Modest Mouse, man man, Love is Laughter. At the Armory in Rochester, Ny- Love as Laughter opened, & I really wasn't too into them. Only heard a couple tracks before I saw them, but they did little to get the crowd going. After about 30 minutes of them playing songs that could very well have been the same song played a touch slower/Faster, Man Man came onstage. I had never heard their music before, but about 10 seconds into the first song I was already dancing around. Imagine Frank Zappa & Tom Waits playing in a circus somwhere in the Czech Republic on acid. Their energy level is very high, with various percussives (I love the xylophone!), synths & trumpet. I still have yet to purchase any of their music, as I'm not sure how it would translate onto a proper album- something tells me this is a band that needs to be experienced live to get a proper appreciation for them. Safe to say they were very fun & I was impressed with their live show. Modest Mouse followed with a pretty solid set, opening with Paper thin walls & playing a heavy dose of their latest album sprinkled with the oldies. Tralier Trash & Doin the Cockroach were my personal highlights, but would have loved for them to play The Stars are Projectors....overall they were solid. Isaak Brock wasn't as intoxicated as the last time I saw him (in Toronto 2 summers ago), & was great vocally. He struggled with a solo during Dramamine, but otherwise was pretty on point. Concert grade Grade B+

May 24- The Faint @ Town Ballroom Buffalo, NY

If I run short on cash, Album Leaf will get the bump- I saw them once before, as well as the local Sleeping Kings....interested to see Young Galaxy though, members of Stars. That's about it right now, I will be back with some thoughts on the shows...

Kai- that's awesome, they are coming July 3rd to Toronto....thinking about going, I can't imagine that show being anything less than spectacular.

Luke C- I have tickets to the July 13th show- by far the most I've ever paid for ticketrs, but I figured I should see it.....Looking forward to hearing how it went

I saw Tool last week. Amazing! Just fucking amazing. I loved what they did with "46 & Two" - Justin Chancellor is a monster with that bass and his crazy wah-wah-ing ways. Danny Carey threw a broken, signed drumstick out at the end of the show and my girlfriend and I fucking caught it! And we were both tripping balls on ac!d! Muwahaha!

I went to The Haunted concert that was playing near me, but not to see them; I went for the support band, Municipal Waste, a tongue in cheek thrash band. I think they're tongue in cheek anyway (one of their songs was about sharks so take that as you will).

I only went to watch, but when the first song started, I ended up in the small mosh pit that had started (which was a bad idea as I usually exercise if I know I'm going to be in a pit) and was having fun. Until the mosh pit disappeared, and I was left standing by myself and two other guys who were doing that slam dancing or whatever it is called for the remainder of the set. Sorry, but I don't dance by myself at a metal gig; I pit or I stand and watch the band! Don't misread me, I'm no mega tough guy or facially scarred pit veteran out for nothing but violence and scattered bodies, but that was a pretty weak pit. I didn't wait until they were on, but someone told me the crowd didn't even mosh for The Haunted either! That's what you get when your band is hyped to death and all the kids (literally) come out, all dressed in kid size slayer shirts and cheap ass t-shirts!

I actually went to see what they sounded like, as I'd not heard their music before, and they weren't as good as I was expecting to be honest (even with Dave Witte on drums). But it was still an OK night out, and I'd say if they're playing in your area and want a night of thrash metal about beer, headbanging until your neck breaks and sharks on speed, then I say go.

As for me, I COULD skip the Red Sox game next week and go across the street to see Against Me! at the Avalon?

Besides that, Warped Tour on August 9th. Excited about Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, Fall of Troy and Paramore.

I saw the Arcade Fire on saturday in Philly and holy fucking god it was amazing. It started as a seated show. I had managed to get third row seats but anyone who tried to move or stand in the aisles was forced back to thier seats by the obnoxious ushers. Upon seeing this, Win Butler said something like, "Always with the fucking tickets! All you guys come down here." At which point there was a mass stampede to the front of the theater. Luckily my girlfriend and I got dead center and close enough to touch the stage. The rest of the night was super energetic brilliance. The show was packed and the crowd was so into the music. The band was stunning. I have never seen any group play with so much exuberence and energy.

The set was incredible. They played everything off the new album except "My Body is a Cage." They also played 'Haiti' and 'Laika' off of 'Funeral' and they closed with 'Power Out' and 'Rebellion (Lies).' The really cool thing was these songs were seamlessly transitioned together. In between was an incredibly awesome, intense extension of the end of 'Power Out' (my favorite Arcade Fire song). The encore was 'Keep the Car Running' and the absolutely frickin fantastic 'Intervention' brought the show to a close. I'd have to say this may have been the best show I have ever seen, bar none. The music was insanely good, the atmosphere was perfect, being so close to the stage was a dream come true, and hearing them play live, finally, was an amazing experience.

These guys and girls are so talented and intense and obviously passionate about their music that it's impossible not to get totally swept away by their live performance. This show was well worth the price I paid for them, which previously I felt to be a bit exorbiant ($85 for the pair). It's two days later and I still can't stop thinking about and gushing about this show to my friends (to their annoyance and, in some cases, intense jealousy

). For me, it was flawless.

Upcoming shows: 'The Album Leaf' with 'Young Galaxy' and 'Belong' next tuesday and 'Mono' with 'Grails' and 'World's End Girlfirend' next wednesday and thursday. I'm extremely excited for the latter of the two, especially since Mono is so brilliant live and the new Grails album is very very good.

Last show:

5/5: Ted Leo at Webster Hall. Ted Leo was in fine form as he played songs primarily from Living With The Living and Shake The Sheets, a few off of Hearts of Oak, covered One More Time by Daft Punk and, in the far too early encore (there was a prom at Webster Hall), ended by covering Suspect Device by Stiff Little Fingers. The set was surprisingly tame by the standards of other shows I've been to (Ted only went through one set of guitar strings, never even banged himself in the head with his mic drawing blood) but I've always found Ted Leo + The Pharmacists to be better live than recorded, and it's difficult not to listen to songs like Me And Mia or Counting Down The Hours without getting into the song and dancing around a bit. Chris Wilson, the ursine drummer, was particularly impressive and his metronome like bass drum beats gave the set a heavy dose of authority. Oh, and apparently Ted Leo (vegan or so wikipedia says) is not straight edge, he just doesn't drink beer because he's watching his girlish figure. I'm still not sure how I feel about that.

I saw The Haunted back in 2002 when Marco Aro was still singing for them and they were fucking awesome, I'd forgotten about it but it was a killer gig, I'm a pretty huge At The Gates fan (at that time about 3/4 of ATG's old members were in The Haunted) and I remember the whole crowd went nuts when they covered "Blinded by Fear", one of the coolest concert moments I've experienced.

The last gig I went to was Arcturus about a month ago, was damn good they played a couple of songs from La Masquerade Infernale Including "The Chaos Path" which was really great live. Simen Hestaes wasn't bad on the vocals either.

My God it was freaking SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET. Though I would never usually pay £50 for one gig it was worth it to see the entire Dark Side of the Moon plus all of Wish You Were here except Have A Cigar then otehr Pink Floyd staples like Comfrotably Numb. The solo stuff he did was good but nothing compared to the Pink Floyd magic.

Hellogoodbye was last night. From what I could tell, they put on a really good show, but as I was practically being raped by the crowd and my stomach squeezed up into my neck, I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I should have. Plus 90% of the crowd was made up of junior high girls. I felt old.

Minus the Bear on Saturday should be better, however. I'm really looking forward to it.

I won't say too much about the Mono show I saw on wednesday. the Openers were fantastic. World's End Girlfriend played for the better part of an hour without stopping once which was damn impressive. When he finished his set, a guy standing near me commented that, "after hearing that there doesn't seem like much point in even trying to make that kind of music anymore." His point: it was fucking amazing.
But Mono....well let me put it this way. After seeing Mono live twice and hearing basically all of their recorded material with very few exceptions I am convinced that they put basically every other "post-rock" band to shame. This includes Explosions in the Sky. It includes Mogwai. It includes Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Mono are so fucking amazing, so able to create so much depth of emotion in their songs, it stuns me. Theirsongs are able to build from beautiful whisper quiet orchestrations to squalling, almost unbearably loud dirges. Listen to the track "Com(?)", or rather the entierty of thier new album for perfect examples of this. Bascally Mono is one of the best bands out there right now. Sure they might not be exceptionally innovative but they do what they do better than basically anyone else. Long story short: the show blew me away and surpassed all my expectations. Truly magnificent stuff.

I saw Feist last Wednesday. She put on an incredible show. Gorgeous voice, a decent focus on her new album (which I prefer to Let It Die), and fun crowd interaction. It was in a seated venue, which was silly, but about three quarters of the way into her set, she invited people to leave their seats (I felt really bad for the folks stuck on the balcony at this point). I ended up right at the stage, front and center, which was great fun. Even being attacked by a security guard after the show ended didn't ruin the evening.

I saw Feist open for Bright Eyes a little under 2 years ago- Wasn't all that fond of her before the show (I only listened to her a couple times), but she was very good live. A beautiful voice indeed- my personal favorite memory from that show was her performing "When I Was a Young Girl". Definitely worth checking out in my opinion.....

Casiotone was unimpressive, really wasn't into it at all.... ended up bailing out of the Album Leaf show. Thinking of checking out The Faint tomorrow- saw them as an opener & they were ace, hoping to get out of work in time....

She started at about ten to nine with us and then played until quarter after ten. This gave me enough time to attend an open mic night where I didn't win.

My friend Dah went up and saw Cursive about a week ago.

I just saw Brand New, Anathallo, and the Colour Revolt last night. It was awesome. The crowd sucked though. THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. What made it worse was, all the bands were awesome. Anathallo and Brand New had an really energetic performances. But nobody did anything. Stupid scene people and "I went even though I don't like the band, but my friends do, so they'll be jealous of me since I went," people. Makes me angry.

I would kill to see These Arms Are Snakes, but not so much for the metal they are accompanied with.

Also, Brand New seems like a totally studio-closet band to me. Mind you, I've never heard them live, but their recordings don't seem like they'd translate well to stage.

Just returned from seeing Arcade Fire. Incredible show, much better than the last time I saw them (though last time they had Wolf Parade in tow, so a slight edge to that show). But, I'm tired and hungry, so more on that in the morning.

I like them live better. Their albums do not do them justice. They add so much more to the music when on stage. For example: The intro track on Deja Entendu, "Tautou", is very melodic and stuff. On stage, it's still very ambient, but there was two drum sets on the stage, and the drummer from the Colour Revolt came out and harmonized with Brand New's drummer, and they added a bunch of feedback and ambient noise. It was so cool.

I saw Captured! By Robots on the same weekend I saw Arcade Fire (one week ago). The Robots show was so much more entertaining. That guy is probably the best one man act I've ever seen, blah blah blah, totally fucking awesome show. See him live.

Oh man Captured! by Robots is probably the best live act ev4r!! When I went, I high fived J-Bot like fifteen times (and he kept making jew-jokes), and the opening act-The Teddybear Orchestra (two teddybears singing songs about being thrown away and liking milk/whiskey) was adorable. They come back every year, except last year because there was a blizzard.

And Misconception-too bad you weren't of age... after Minus the Bear was an 80's dance party and all of Chin Up Chin Up and a few Minus the Bear-ers were up there dancing. Twas a lot of fun.
