Minutes to Midnight
« on: 15 May 2007, 20:55 »

I was a big fan of Linkin Park's first album, Hybrid Theory.

I was less impressed with Reanimated, and Meteora, and haven't even looked into the other remix CD they did.

I recently heard most of their new CD, Minutes to Midnight, and I have to say, a lot of those songs are really well done, and at least one of them doesn't even sound like LP at all.

Total LP-haters aside, what do you think of their new CD, and their past CDs while we're at it?

Also, what's up with Chester? I heard he was pretty sick.

I don't know anyone IRL that listens to them, so I haven't had the chance to hear it.  I might not ever get that chance, either.

I'm listening to the new Megadeth album right now.  It's "Megadeth-y" and that should let people know if they like it or not from that just there.

I thought this was going to be about Iron Maiden :( oh well

As the madmen play on words and make us all dance to their song
To the tune of starving millions to make a better kind of gun.

The killer's breed or the Demon's seed,
The glamor, the fortune, the pain,
Go to war again, blood is freedom's stain
But don't you pray for my soul anymore.

You know, calling them "the Irons" doesn't really conjure the tough image I think you're going for there. Unless when you think of ironing you immediately think of Extreme Ironing.

Wow. Off-topic with the third post?

I dug Hybrid Theory when I was an angsty teen. Meteora not so much and I didn't bother with the remix stuff.

When I first downloaded Minutes to Midnight, it was a fake. It was completely horrible. Boring, faceless raprock lacking any energy.

Then I downloaded the actual thing... which was worse.

I've always thought and still think that Hybrid Theory is simply a fantastic pop record. The second one less so, but it has some nice moments. Oddly my favourite is 'Session' which is just a little tossed-off instrumental.

I also liked a lot of Reanimation, like the remix of 'With You.' And the live version of 'Pushing Me Away' from the Texas live album's good.

I've not got the new album yet. I might be reviewing it so I've not bought it yet.

The main problem I have this LP is the fact that they just don't seem to want to reach a good understanding of their instruments.  It's as if they used the original two albums to ride on the success of rap-rock like Limp Bizkit and now that they've got a strong fanbase they're actually doing what they want, except that they can't really do it because they didn't plan this far in terms of developing their technical ability.
I was mislead enough to think there was a decent song or two on the album because they apparently said they'd be doing some classic rock stuff.

Oh well.

Also, up the irons dudes.

Yeah but then again prior to Hybrid Theory they said in an interview there'd be death metal influences, so Linkin Park are really an authority on nothing. Least of all their own music.

To be perfectly honest, the idea of taking badly played hard rock and mixing it with badly written and executed rap has absolutely no appeal to me.

Also, the hobo version of Wayne Static is actually the rapper of the group, methinks. I find that quite odd because he looks the most nu-metal.

No, honestly, this new record doesn't sound like the other two. I really have to give LP credit for at least trying to be different on this album.

I disagree. Same song structures, same vocals, same shoddy instrumental work... they just don't mix genres anymore.

out of curiousity, I did actually download this.

And well, it does suck indeed, though parts of it do suck a lot less then previous albums.

But seriously, how can anyone of intelligence like this? The lyrics are incredibly retarded, the musicians have absolutely no skill... It's all just clicked, rap-rock designed to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Better then Hybrid Theory and Meteora, but I could drop a turd onto a microphone and it would sound better then those two abominations. I give this 0.5/10 instead of 0/10

I used to be a fan in junior high school, back when I did not have a taste of my own. Not so much anymore, but I'm not going to go so far as to shit all over them because there isn't really much to say. It's not great music, but hell, there's far worse out there.

I do find this hilarious, however.

I think he was - justifiably - more trying to avoid the 'They're shit. kthx' kind of replies that can appear in threads such as these, mostly from forumites who are usually rather witty, rather than the sensible argument kind of replies.

Hell, I had a nasty bout with Numetalfanitis back in High School. When I first heard "Hybrid Theory", I thought it was an interesting mix of elements with terrible lyrical content. The problem with Nu-Metal in general, like most "emotional" music, their lyrics are just down-down-down. They don't solve the problems they're singing about, it's just wallowing in self-pity. Introspective is fine, but Chester Bennington didn't have any sparks of clarity that could lead him out of whatever the fuck was bothering him - He just sat on his bed and cried that it was "all their fault,". Mike Shinoda's work as an MC was the only reason I kept up with the band, and now that he's in Fort Minor, I find Linkin Park very easy to ignore.

that article is crazy. and in regards to LP, i don't mind their music and i own the meteora record cuz i think it's a decent record to own, but after i heard their single of the new album, i thought to my self... wow that is way worse than anything off meteora,

i dunno there is just something in the quality of the song that i didn't like. it just didn't sound like LP. i dont really listen to them much anymore so that could be it mabey
