Gold Anodized Pickguards = *drool*

NOTE: This is not real. This is a mockup. I made this. In Photoshop. Winnar.

EDIT: Oh, but the guitar is totally mine, just changing the pickguard. This is how it looks like.

Yes, the Silverface is there to rub it in.

Guys, I fell in love with an old, cheap ass Tempo P-Bass copy.  It has like 20-year old flat-wounds on it that are so worn they are perfectly smooth.  It was also played by someone in a polka band; you can tell by looking at the way the neck is worn that he played only two notes: E and A.

You guys. YOU GUYS.

So, I traded in my 7-string. It was fun, but I'm just too used to 6-strings to make the most of it. Also the pickups really did sound like ass.

Acting on a hunch, though (Ibanez Japan build quality + good pickups must = good guitar, right?) I traded it in for one of these:

Holy shit guys, new favorite metal guitar. Yeah yeah it doesn't have a neck pickup, WHATEVER. The body's basswood, the neck's maple/rosewood and it's got a Floyd Rose, so tonally this guitar shouldn't be anything special but HOLY GOD THE SOUND. It's pretty loud unplugged, which is always a good sign for an electric. Build quality's top notch, playability is RIDICULOUS. Super wide, super skinny neck profile. I haven't beaten the fuck out of the trem yet but preliminary results indicate it's nice and stable. The weird zero-point trem system is really easy to adjust- there's just a little knob you can twist through the backplate to adjust the tension, kind of like on a Parker Fly. I had the guitar dialed down from standard to drop-C in under five minutes, with no tools.

I don't know how Seymour Duncan does it but all their pickups I've tried have this insanely pretty shimmer in the upper-mids that sounds so good to my ears. This is obviously meant to be a chugga-chugga-weeeee guitar but when I first plugged it in I spent a good 20 minutes just on the clean channel of my amp, it sounded so nice. It's a "full shred" which is a stupid name for a pickup, but whatever- it's got a little less low-end than a JB, but with a resulting clarity and attack that makes it really sparkle.

There was a big fad a few years back in the bassist community for slapping flatwounds on your P-Bass and playing with your thumb all 1950's style. It can be a really good tone when used appropriately.

Fad? Shit, motherfuckers have been doing that for years, everyone who does it swears by it.

I put flats on mine during my stint in a prog/stoner rock band, partially because my bass at the time was too bright, and partially because I didn't have any other strings/$ for strings. It worked pretty well until I killed my head and blew up my cab.

What would be a rad pair of single-coils to put in a Fender Lead II? I was thinking something along the lines of Red Lace Sensors or some kind of hot-output Seymour Duncan.

The one thing i hate about Seymour Duncan is that they don't make neck humbuckers for Teles. Seriously guys, it would be great if you made a good Fender Wide Range replica so that i cokd gouge the shit out of my teleclone and  make it a Custom.

Paul Malinowski from Shiner/Season to Risk!  I saw Shiner 3 or 4 times and I must say, that bass sound must be heard (and felt) live to be believed.  He's really kind of weird about being asked how he gets that tone.  I know he uses Mesa Boogie bass heads and a tube screamer, but there's also a preamp in-line I believe.  Rumor has it, it's one of those early 80's Peavey numbers that had the "saturation" knob that was essentially distortion.  I've also seen him use a delay and chorus with an ebow.  Amazing.

Eh, depends on who you are. There's a local band here in Phoenix with a bass player who does a lot of atmospheric stuff with pedals that's very cool.  I've also seen a guy who used distortion, chorus and an upright bass bow a la Jimmy Page for some great sounds.  (See also- Jaco Pastorius re: chorus pedals). Personally, I'm more of the JPJ school, though.  I only own passive basses and don't use any pedals other than a tuner.  My rig's even a simple Kustom 2x10 combo.  I have owned active basses, and used to use a bass chorus through a full stack that had a rackmount compressor, but I found gigging pretty consistently meant that something would go wrong somewhere- either the pedal wouldlstop working, or the batteries in the pickups would die, etc.  It's all just a matter of personal preference.

It totally is. We have two basses w/ active pickups she doesn't even play.
Conversely, I play a parker. Which is stereo. Into a custom breakout box, into a ginormous pod pedal board into an amp. And I'm using the pod through the effect loop in such a way to just use the power amp on my amp. I figured out that if I cut an old bike inner tube into six inch sections I can use it to keep organized all my cables going to-from the pod and the amp.

Guitar is a TOTALLY different story. I'm still very much a no effects, straight into a 2x12 fender combo guy, but I thnk guitar players can do so much with effects and have greater control than a bass player.  Once again, you've got to see Shiner for the effects monsters.  Also, Allen Epley's new band The Life and Times is all over the tasteful effects usage.

I don't think I'll ever LIKE the sound of the EMG 81-7 in the bridge, but it's passable. Nevertheless, this is a totally great-feeling and sounding instrument. It plays great, and that's what matters now. I can always throw some passives in later to make it sing.

Brendan Kelly uses that exact guitar with The Falcon. Sounded good when I saw them.

I don't think so, I was just messing with some chords and a bluesy scale.

Also, I'm loving this thing's tone more and more every second!  Also, I just found out that my dad still has the old pickups he swapped out of his Strat a while ago.  1980's Squier pickups any good?

I've heard great things about those new Seymour Duncan Blackouts, which I think can be installed in an emg-style rout without any modification.

Alright, here's a short crappy demo of my new baby, Sherman the Cigar Box Guitar!

The bridge is a little high, but I can always tweak it.  It's crazy how loud it is for being so small!

Wow, that really is impressive.

Awesome guitar. I've always wanted to get myself a cream colored viper.

I've heard they're great too - and yeah, they're supposed to fit straight into an EMG slot.

guys i just fell in love with the gibson SG at my local music store. which is weird normally i go for the metal axes and dont like the gibby's, but i just picked up this one and all i could play out of it was sweet hard rock and blues. that and it cranks pinch harmonics too. i didnt notice the model no., but it was like 870 $ canadian, and definitely a gibson, red, natural finish. any body know what this would be? couldnt be a standard, they are rediculously expensive.

Sounds kind of like the one Patrick picked up.

I played a couple of Epiphone Dots today.  Holy shit.  These are nice guitars for their price.  They sound fantastic and play extremely well.  Although, one had a slightly slimmer neck than the other.  It was really weird.

Sounds like an SG Special faded.

Yeah, I'm aware of the Blackouts, but I am as always very skecptical about active pickups. I may just swap the 81 out for a 707, since that pickup has actually surprised me very much, in a positive way.
Otherwise, I'm just gonna get some of those EMG-to-passive conversion pickup rings off the internet, and throw in some Bareknuckles or DiMarzios.

Bareknuckle Pickups have these wicked-awesome distressed and rusty-looking pickup covers, that I think would look supremely badass, since the guitar is a little beat-up already. They're pricey though.

What the others said, SG Special Faded. I've had one myself for a while and have nothing but praise for that guitar. The bang-for-the-buck factor on that thing is UNREAL!

The one thing i hate about Seymour Duncan is that they don't make neck humbuckers for Teles. Seriously guys, it would be great if you made a good Fender Wide Range replica so that i cokd gouge the shit out of my teleclone and  make it a Custom.

I'd call Subway and see what they could do. I know they've got a metric fuckton of the actual Wide Ranges sitting around.

You sort of have a very limited control over tone with acoustics.  Mostly through attack, picking style, and your strings.  Mostly it's the guitar you get.  There's a Taylor I want that is has the sweetest tone ever.  Lots of bass, without too much treble.  It had mahogany back and sides and a spruce top.  However, I have played an Alvarez that was four hundred dollars cheaper, but sounded just as amazing, just a bit more subdued as the body was entirely mahogany.

At the same, I love the different tones and sounds you can make with an electric guitar.  Having amplifiers and pedals that all do different things when built one way or another, or do this or that is overwhelming but the opportunities are near limitless.  And rock music is great fun to play.

I don't really like one any more than the other.  I don't think I should.

(I feel like I was ranting.  I apologize if I was.)
