speaking of e-bows, they don't work on basses, do they?

Indeed they do.  I've seen the guy from Shiner use one.  Here's the key- heavy distortion, chorus pedal and ebow.  You also have to get near your amp so it starts to feed back a little.

The E-Bow is designed for guitar use, but if you alter the way you play with it, it works for bass. It just requires a bit more effort and creativity.

I use the ebow on everything - it's even fun on mandolin. The problem with using it on bass is that it takes a while to start vibrating the string because they're bigger. It will still work though.

When I saw Ratatat live, they used a volume pedal to get that swelling sound. There's probably a lot of different ways to get that effect, that seems like the easiest.

The main advantage of the eBow is infinite sustain, not the volume swells. You can do those just with the knobs on your guitar with practice.

A bit late (college bleh), but nice SG Pat. Pity you got it just in time to find another you wanted more.

Something is wrong with my friend, he is planning on getting a tele... but I feel obliged to make sure he gets a decent one. Are the MIM Teles the ones that fender just calls standards?

Yes. Unless it specifically says "American" in the title or costs over $1200 it was made in Mexico or Japan.

Coinciding rather nicely with all this Ebow talk here.
I bought one last week, and it is pretty awesome.

Yes it works on bass, but it sounds a metric fucktonne better on a guitar.

I was playing around with a loop pedal infact, and came up with this awesome atmosphere, so i plugged into my computer and started overdubbing aswell.
The result is the track "oceanic abyss" on http://www.myspace.com/amphibiotic
There's only two layers of guitar there.
The looping loop, and my overdub recorded in one pass.

Convenient alteration to my summer plans: since the friends who I am working for/renting from have let an entire family move into the apartment I was going to be moving into, I do not have to pay anything for groceries or rent. Long story short, I'ma have something like $5k to fuck with at the end of the summer, no expenses at all.

I already have a good idea where a good chunk of it is going to go. The rather diminutive rest of it is going to go toward sk00lin. I have my priorities.

That had better be something like a Les Paul Standard, otherwise there is something wrong with your priorities.

But, of course, he could get both those guitars for the price of one Les Paul Standard.

I think the Les Paul in cherry finish has to be one of the most beautiful guitars there is. Any disagreement? I promise not to feed you to the sharks.

I think that Firebirds look pretty bitching, and everyone already has an SG or a Les Paul. I personally always get a little thrill when I see people onstage with unconventional gear: Hagstrom guitars, Road Amp heads, etc. I get the same thrill seeing Firebirds, they're pretty rare.

Because Gibsons are awesome and Teles are ugly.

I suppose I could get a firebird, but they are more expensive than a faded special, and the SG looks best of almost all guitars, only ones that have it beat are the cherry Les Paul, over-the-top shiny fancy guitars, and the Giger Ibanezes.

I actually haven't ever heard a firebird's sound, I assume it will be in the same ballpark as most gibsons, yeah?

Well, my Firebird has this really bluesy crunch to it.  I haven't had the fortune to seriously mess around with any other real gibsons, but I imagine it's at least fairly unique to that whole family.  I've got it going through a Fender Twin tube amp, and it just screams. I love it.

Anyway...

Hey hey, Cigar-box guitar update!  I've added a pickup!  it's an old white Dimarzio single coil I found in my dad's old gig bag.  I've got no clue where it's from, but I decided to put it into Ciggy (it's about halfway between where the neck and mid pickups would be on a strat).  based off of the tes I just did (mechanical with only one string) it sounds pretty bitchin.  Got a real nice tone if you can get past the fuzz, but I suppose when I solder it in there that'll help.  Right now it's going directly from pickup to output, but I have an old volume pot lying around, should I throw that on there for good measure?

I have a cheap SG knock off. I can't afford a real SG because I'm poor, but the cheap copy has it's advantages. Mainly that I can mod the shit out of it without stressing about the fact that I'm messing with a Gibson.

I have nothing against Teles specifically except that they don't suit my style. As a blues player I suppose I should be getting a strat, but everyone plays a strat and I have a pathological aversion to doing what everyone else does.

If I had the means I'd get a Firebird in two seconds. It'd be one, except that I'm not a teenager anymore and I'm slowing down.

Yesterday I saw what might be my ultimate guitar.  '73 Tele Thinline in black w/ humbuckers and a Bigsby tremolo.  I cried with joy when I saw it, then cried in sadness when I saw the price tag: $3699.  There was also a rather nice lawsuit Ibanez Les Paul, but it too was expensive (though less so than the Tele).

I will never buy another Gibson in my life unless it's an ES-335. Fuck Gibson. They don't know how to make a single-piece neck with an angled headstock for shit unless you feel like paying $4k for it.

A Fender is an instrument you can buy, set up once, and play it for 50 years, and it will never break. And it only gets prettier the more of the nitro finish you rub off with normal wear.

The "relic" Fenders piss me off though. They don't even put the buckle rash on there. What kind of shit is that?

Ok, I'm going to ask this here.

On my cigarbox baby, I have one pickup wired directly into the output jack.  I didn't think I'd need to ground it (wouldn't it already be grounded?), but there's a lot of noise coming out of it.

I'm thinking I should just throw in the volume pot I have lying around on it just just so I have somewhere to ground it (the underside of the bridge as well I guess).  Any thoughts?

I suppose my phrasing was unclear. My being a blues player and Teles not suiting my style were two unrelated thoughts.

I thought about getting a BC Rich, but I was afraid I'd somehow end up poking someone's eye out.

I actually like the finish on that Slash signature. If I could get that on a guitar that isn't quite so BITCHIN R0KKIN I'd be set.

Nope, you still need to ground it. Underside of the bridge, Fender-style, is the easiest way to do this.

Another thing to reduce noise is to shield everything (pickup cavity, anywhere you put volume/tone knobs, etc). Carvin and Warmoth both sell shielding tape that makes this wicked easy. I recommend this since you're using a single-coil that is prone to 60-cycle hum anyway.

re: BC Rich-

If you're playing a BC Rich and it isn't black with white binding YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

I don't care how fancy the flamed maple or how ornate the neck-through, BC Riches must be BLACK with WHITE BINDING. NO EXCEPTIONS.

I'd like to own a USA-made Warlock or Mockingbird someday. They're really cool out-takes on established designs (Strat and SG).
