It's not that I can't make my SG produce a sound that -fits- for any specific genre, it's just that the sounds it makes aren't what I want. So you guys can stop with this disguised version of "You're just not good enough for a Gibson". I can play a Gibson just fucking fine. But just because you are physically capable of playing "Johnny B. Goode" note for note doesn't mean you want to force the main riff into every song you write for the rest of your life.

Holy inferiority complex!

I don't recall anyone ever saying that 'you're not good enough to play Gibson.' In fact, I'm reasonably sure that had someone said that I would've called that someone a fucking moron. Even if it had been Jeph and said name-calling got me banned. That's a stupid attitude to take, as Gibsons clearly don't require any more inherent skill to play than Fenders do and anyone who's seen a crappy garage band where the guitarist plays an Epi LP probably knows that already.

By your own admission, your SG can fit any genre. So what's with all this versatility crap? Why not just say 'I prefer Fender guitars' and leave it at that?

And yes, Rickenbackers are sexy beasts. I hope that, at least, is something we can all agree on.

I would probably do mean and nasty things to get my hands on a Rickenbaker.  Or, you know, just save the money for one.

Ricks are beautiful guitars, but so fucking expensive. I suppose they're a good investment, and they don't have the QC problems Gibsons have, and the tone almost makes you think its worth it. But good guitars should cost, at most $700. Any more than that and you're in weekend-rockstar/lawyer mode. I'd love a Rick bass but I'd be too afraid of it getting damaged or stolen to take it anywhere.

If I could have any guitar in the world, it would be a azureglow (blue) Rickenbacker 360. They are so fucking expensive, though. I'd go for a week with no food for one of those things. It'd be so damn worth it.

Sad thing is the one I am pictured with is not mine. It belongs to our drummer and has ridiculously light gauge strings on it. EIGHTS! The callouses on my left hand are such that I cannot even feel the strings. Were it mine, I'd have it re-setup with 10's. As it is, I only use it as a backup.

I too love the Rickenbacker, but maybe for a second we could discuss things that are affordable? I think circumstances are gonna put me looking for a new guitar in the next month or so but other circumstances are gonna put me looking for a new guitar thats under $400.  The Squier Jagmaster or maybe their Thinline Tele are looking feasible right about now but opinions and suggestions are welcomed.

ALSO: Guys it's Canada day, that means it's time to get drunk and listen to Sloan.

You'll find Hendrix also used Gibson.

And Dano.

For under $400? They can be had. What are you looking for out of your guitar? Does it need to be gig-worthy? Recording-worthy?

There are gobs of student guitars available that will come in well under-budget. If you need something that can go on the road, you'll probably want something that's durable as all get out. For studio work, sound quality is the key deciding factor.

Depending on what you're looking for tone-wise, an Epiphone could work for you. I do not recommend Squiers, the QA on them is non-existent. You'd be better off with an off-brand instrument, like a Cort or something.

Try going to the store and just picking a few up. If you're not picky about the name on the headstock and don't mind doing a bit of set-up, you should have absolutely no trouble finding a great instrument for that price.

And yeah, happy Canada day. Unfortunately, the medication I'm on means I'm unable to drink. Knock one back for me, willya?

Ricks are beautiful guitars, but so fucking expensive. I suppose they're a good investment, and they don't have the QC problems Gibsons have, and the tone almost makes you think its worth it. I think $700 is a bit low. I would peg the upper limit of what I'm willing to spend at $1100-$1200, in around there. I never have spent that much, but for the right instrument I'd be willing to.

The thing is, a Rickenbacker is an awesome instrument, but only if you can afford it. Being able to afford it doesn't just mean buying it, it also means being able to take it out gigging and jamming and whatever without beng neurotic about it. That means being able to replace it if necessary. There aren't a lot of musicians who can claim that level of income, and there are even fewer who can claim it based on their income.

I don't buy guitars to collect. If I have an instrument it's going to get played. If it gets scratched, damaged or destroyed, so be it. But then, like everything else in this thread that's just my opinion and your mileage may vary.

I'm planning on photographic evidence tomorrow. Half my guitars are that way now, ie. three of 'em.

I believe that is a shop display and not Lummer's guitars.

Having said that, the guitar on the right is probably an old Hagstrom, Teisco, or Supro.

It's possible. I am not the most attentive man ever and these are, of course, my personal opinions.

If you're referring to the Fender vs Gibson discussion, Epiphone and Squier are not the same as Fender and Gibson. It's been my experience in the past that Epiphones tend to be more consistent in terms of quality than Squiers do, which has little to do with their parent companies.

Honestly, I wouldn't get either. I've only ever owned one Epi and I regretted it. I've never owned a Squier but I've played enough Squier Strats to know that I really do not like them at all, and that the build quality is occasionally good but more often asstastic. There really are better instruments to be had.

It's bass. Weird ass pickup setup through, you'd think there wouldn't be much point having two humbuckers so close together.

No, he's referring to the 'Squiers don't actually suck' discussion. I hate Squier Strats too, but my Squier Tele Custom is my dream guitar and I use it as a primary in a metal band, a church band, I've used it on my prog recordings and I plan on using it for anything else I ever do too.

Squire have been putting out some excellent axes of late, but overall I'd have to agree with Mars.  Epiphones appear to be more consistent, construction-wise.  My dream guitar is essentially the Epiphone Dot.  Just wish I could slap a Bigsby with a floating bridge on there.

Guitar for under $400? I would recommend used, preferably off craigslist or ebay. Univox, Aria, or Yamaha made/make some good quality instruments, do a bit of research and you can find a good beater/intermediate guitar for around $200-$300. There's also SX (Rondo Music), though you might need to swap out the pups as there's tend to be pretty chintzy, but they have a very wide range of body styles and the best quality you'll find for $100. Eastwood are probably highest on the quality scale, but they're also the most expensive.

Funny story, Hot Topic is the direct result of a failed bet between lawyers and the devil at one of those boozy conventions you're always hearing about.  We bet total control over our souls that we could make Slipknot marketable, and there you have it.  You can imagine the amount of booze and ammoral people it takes ot pull a thing like that off.

Ok guys, I finally took pictures of my guitars.

From right to left, it starts with a Gibson Les Paul Jr. Nashville Deluxe doublecut. This was a rare custom jobbie; they only made a limited run of 400. One P90 pickup, this thing screams. Next up, the Hamer Flametop. This was my first guitar, I bought it used. The thing sustains for days and it sounds beautiful. I never get to play her as much as I'd like, as my other guitars sound a little nicer. The last is my newest guitar, a Fender Telecaster with a B-Bender installed. I bought it used and it's beat to shit; It's an early 90s Fender. It sounds amazing - the neck pickup is so clean and country sounding, it's amazing.

Here's the acoustics... They're all Alvarez, and it's a 12-string, an acoustic-electric bass, and a regular old AD-60S six string. They're all fantastic. If I'm just sitting around, I'm almost always fiddling with these. What can I say, I've got a problem sitting still.

Finally, the weird. The Danelectro is a reissue of the Dano Pro. It sounds great when you're fingerpicking. The pickups really capture everything nicely... but there's a slight ground problem. It seems to buzz all the time, so I've been trying to fix the problem. The banjo is a Dean - I don't think I need to talk much more about that. It's not the nicest banjo but it gets the job done. Although, every time I pick up a Goodtime banjo I think about trading this one in. Anyway, the last guitar is the DiPinto Galaxie 4. This is a true thing of beauty. It's the nicest guitar I've ever played, and it does everything well. I almost always play this guitar at shows, and I can't think of any guitar that sounds nicer, or is capable of more tone than this creamdream.

Not pictured - Fender P-Bass, Squire '51 Telecaster. I don't really need to explain what a P-Bass does, and the Squier, well that's sort of a science project - I'm swapping pickups and I put a Tiesco neck on it. They're both currently at our practice space.

So I got a Stereo Memory Man w/ Hazarai.

It cost me an arm and a leg.

I'm starting a Mogwai/The Album Leaf type band with a friend and we had our first jam today, and this thing is fucking spectacular. Totally worth it.

Patrick I win now.

Pics incoming when I don't leave it at the practice space.

So. String width. Is there a certain width needed for a given amount tuned down? I am using 9s right now, since that is what I was given for my birthday last year (I don't change them near as often as I should), but I will probably be learning a lot of songs down to C soon, so I am wondering if I will need new strings.

As thick as you can comfortably play is usually best.

Drop C is Jeph's specialty but from what I've learned from his posts, get yourself some 11s or, if you can manage, 12s.

Shit man, you shouldn't be using 9s for anything. They're shitty and lack any tone. 10s are your standard strings.

They were what was recommended for a beginner, I guess. I have some 12s, but those are for the acoustic, and I know that those are too thick to play with any speed. I guess I will start with 11s, if those are needed, otherwise I would work my way up.

That's sort of bad advice. On one hand they are easier to fret, on the other hand it's better to start with 10s and build your callouses and finger strength up faster.

Also because of this advice now that you're ready to play in different tunings your fingers aren't strong enough for the proper gauge.

Thick strings are necessary for drop C because most pick-ups will do a shitty job picking up lighter strings when you detune.

'Should' is relative. This isn't like clarinets where the reed just stops working. Strings can carry on for as long as you want them to, unless they snap. Personally, I don't change my strings (or at least, not all at once) unless I break one or have a gig coming up. There's just no need unless you're gigging regularly, and it gets stupidly expensive. If you gig every week, you 'should' probably change your strings every time. If you gig once a year, you're probably already changing them monthly if that.

Quote
but I will probably be learning a lot of songs down to C soon, so I am wondering if I will need new strings.

You most definitely will.

And again, all the people saying 'roflcopter 9s', this is about what the user wants to use, and there's nothing wrong with 9s. Saying 'they sound like shit' is a crock, because for one thing that's opinion anyway, but the layman gig-goer isn't about to pick out the 9s and 10s from a line-up. If you're playing for an audiophile guitarist, then play with the thickest damn strings you can find. If you're playing for yourself, or for the non-musician fans, then just use the guages you want to fucking use like I do. And who knows, if you're lucky that'll be the same thing.

I change my strings maybe a couple times a year, I don't tend to think about it, I tune my guitar before a lesson, otherwise I just start playing unless I have to change tunings.

I suppose that lower tunings and heavier strings will cancel each other out somewhat, didn't Iommi like playing in lower tunings because there was less pressure on his two bad fingers at lower tensions?

I'm not likely to change any time soon, I might switch to 10s or 11s when I get my SG, but as is, I have enough strings, and I am cheap.

DK, I'm not shitting on 9s out of elitism. I used them for a while, and they were nice and easy to play. Until I played a friend's guitar with 10s and realized that a) I was losing half my tone going down barely a gauge and b) I was a significantly better guitarist than I thought, and the weak tone was bringing my playing way down. They just don't. sound. good.

11s and 12s are pretty unnecessary unless you simply like the way they feel or are playing in low tunings. But if you're gonna play any electric guitar, try adjusting to 10s.

alternate option: bid more money you dumb fuck

Don't have much money on me right now, 'Milio. Kinda spent most of it on Sigur Ros tickets. I'm bidding what I can afford.

They just don't. sound. good.

If you can find me a bunch of non-musicians who can hear the same piece of music, played with two different guages but in exactly the same way, and tell the difference, then I'll freely admit that you're right. But I maintain that to anyone other than a guitar player or at least someone with some kind of musical knowledge, there's no f'ing difference. I'm not saying that I can't tell, obviously I can tell, and I do use .10s on my standard tuning guitars and 11s on my lower tuned guitars. But aside from us, no motherfucker's gonna know.

Check out what I just picked up for $550 (Canadian):

http://www.kellyindustries.com/guitars/fender_telecaster_69_thinline.html
^^It's that exact colour.^^

Anyways, I picked it up used at the new Long & McQuade in downtown Vancouver (which is a very nice store). The guy had traded it in the same day that I bought it. It was made in Mexico in 2005. It's in pretty good condition and I love playing it.

Something tells me I won't be touching my SG for a couple weeks.  :-P

Alright people. Time for a roundup:

Gibson Joan Jett Melody Maker, my latest acquisition.
It still has the stock 10-46 strings on it, since I've only had it a week now. Sometime soon, I'm slappin' on a set of 10-52.

Up next, is my Greco Les Paul Custom. It's basically a japanese Lawsuit-era copy, which sounds and plays amazing. Currently set up with a set of 13-60 GHS Boomers, in Drop Bb
for learning some Baroness riffs.

Then, there is my Gibson. An LP Standard, with Seymour Duncan Alnico II's, which I am not entirely happy with. I expect to slam in some DiMarzio's sometime soon.
The strings on it, are Thomastik-Infeld Powerbright gauged 11-53, tuned to Eb Standard. These strings are hands down the best strings I have ever played. The sustain, treble "bite" and output on these things is unparalleled, and I've tried damn near everything.

Here's an old warhorse; My Ibanez S7420, which has been heavily modded over the years. The paint has been stripped, and pretty much all hardware save for the bridge pickup and the pots.
It's strung up with a set of 10-52's with a .65 bass string as the low B.
This guitar brings the chug in severe amounts.

Best neck ever, seriously.

This pickup, is a DiMarzio X2N-7. This pickup does not fuck around..

Up next is my LTD Viper 407. I really like this guitar, a lot! Playability is great, sound too, and the whole thing just feels solid and well built.
I just, CAN'T get used to EMG's though. It had an EMG 81-7 in the bridge, and it sounded like ASS.
So I took it out, and moved the EMG 707 neck pickup down into the brigde position. It sounds a lot better now, but I'll have to put in a Passive pickup at some point. Actives just don't do it for me.
It is strung up the same way as my other seven-string.

YOU SUCK EMG 81-7!!!!

FUUUUUCK YOOOOOOUUUU

SHRED SHRED SHRED SHRED

SHREEEEEED

This is my main Bass to fool around on:

Pedals:

My Mascot:

And this is just plain hideous:

Well, if bombing the thread with images is your game, here is what I own!

First, my crappy Encore!

I got this from a Cash Generator for sixty quid. It's a piece of shit but I keep hold of it because most of my early songs were written on it and it was more or less my go-to guitar in a couple of years ago. I also think it's a good experience playing it, because it's so shit that even playing barre chords on it is a struggle, and so playing it like that occasionally makes it good for my hand strength. I also put stickers from the front of albums I buy on it now, for some reason. Off the top I my head, I remember it has NIN, Cooper Temple Clause, Ryan Adams and I think an Eminem one on there somewhere. It's kind of a statement of abuse really, because I hate guitars covered in stickers.

The Grey Beast. Traded my Tele standard to a mate for this and £25. It's great for metal and not much else, but it damn well does that job. Good guitar, I like its non-PRS look too. Although I call it the Grey Beast because I couldn't possibly tell you what brand it is without looking, let alone the model.

My Fender electro-acoustic. The guitar I use to write with now, if I had to pick one guitar to keep and get rid of the others, it'd be this one. Also has a pretty badass distorted tone.

My Hofner. This has been in my family for like, forty years, it's a beautiful, beautiful guitar. It's got the most insane distorted tone, I use it in my metal band. You can't tune it though, the intonation is fucked. However, put it in an open or alternate tuning and you're sorted.

My Yammy! First electric guitar I owned, because no way was I buying a Strat. I thought until recently it was a piece of shit, and in truth it doesn't play very well. But it's actually a pretty good guitar with a very powerful bridge pickup that works great for metal. It's somewhat falling to bits though - the neck pickup's screws came out and so I just gaffer taped it in place. This actually had an interesting effect on the tone, and now it works great for hardcore punk, Black Flag in particular. I also really like the way it looks like that.

My pride and joy. This guitar can do fucking anything. It was my dream guitar, I don't think I've had it for more than a year and a half at this point. Clean tones and dirty tones are great on both pickups, I can use it for any type of music I want to try and it does it effortlessly. It's also a dream to play and as far as aesthetics is my favourite guitar to look at. I've put one sticker on it - from the little-remembered metal band Fony, who I fucking love and miss a lot - because I'm a believer in, if you're having stickers, having one tasteful sticker, so I've got this one on it.

My lap steel. I distort it and use it for my metal band. I love this fucking thing, but I need to learn how to play it better.

Also, they aren't guitars, but...

My mandolin! This I can play better, I just gotta write the chords down usually so I remember where I am. I can't play Losing My Religion, because i forget how, but gimme a couple of minutes and I pretty much remember. I love this fucking thing and once I start home-recording I'm going to be using it, and the lap steel, a lot.

The greatest impulse buy in history. £99 for this bad boy and I've got hours and hours and hours of use out of it.
