I guess I can post my guitars here.

My very lovely Washburn WD-55.
Got it used with case for $400 bucks. Quite a steal.
The thing plays and sounds better than my sister's $1300 Martin.
I love it. ^_^
My electric is in the shop right now, but I'll upload some pics when I get back.
Actually, while I'm posting right now, I'll ask a question.
Right now, I have a crappy 10W Marshall practice amp and I'm looking to get a better, louder amp.
I have a budget of $800-$900, and I'd like to get a tube amp.
I was looking at the http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Hot-Rod-DeVille-410?sku=480508
Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410 ($850), but I remember reading in this thread it's not good for metal.
However, could one not buy a good distortion pedal to get a metal tone?
Thanks in advance for the help. ^_^
EDIT: Smaller picture, per request. Sorry.

hi, guys. I registered to show off my guitar. I think it's a pretty nice guitar to have.

I also just noticed that my smokey is made out of a pack of Winstons (we don't even have them here) and therefore right above the speaker it says "Naturally smooth". This isn't really a concept I would normally apply to playing an SG through a Smokey, but it made me giggle.

My Hofner. This has been in my family for like, forty years, it's a beautiful, beautiful guitar. It's got the most insane distorted tone, I use it in my metal band. You can't tune it though, the intonation is fucked. However, put it in an open or alternate tuning and you're sorted.

Can't you set the intonation by moving the bridge around?

I've got that exact amp, the DeVille.  I haven't tried playing metal through it, but it gets some crazy tones if you play around with it.  It's smaller brethren, the Deluxe 212 has a somewhat darker tone and it's cheaper.  There's also the Orange Tiny Terror.  Grab a nice cabinet and shred away.  One of the dudes from Opeth plays a Laney, I believe.  You could look into one of their combos, but I think they're kind of pricey.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. That's pretty much all softer metal, and it's pretty much pushed to it's limit. Pretty excellent tone on the Metallica and Megadeth though.

Not necessarily- different pitches (string tension) and different intonation (string length) work together to make notes sound in tune. It's the same reason why you have to re-intonate if you make drastic string gauge or tuning changes.

I'm not trying to ignore four decades of cultural evolution, just.. why have new terms not been invented along with new ideas? Metal used to be, basically, blues rock with heavy distortion, extended solos, and pointier guitars. Now it's an entirely different, broad genre of music and the bands I just described are demoted to "classic rock" status.

Not to derail the trend of posting pics of your own guitar, but I didn't think this justified a whole thread.
What do you think of Johhny A's signature Gibson? I personally think it's the sickest guitar around.

Possibly beaten by an American Telecaster, but I have a soft spot for the twang, and this guitar looks incredible next to a Telecaster. Not that a Tele is ugly, this guitar is just beautiful.

I wasn't terribly aware of the SG until I went looking for a new guitar (I knew of them, but I was never much of a guitar nerd and they weren't in my list of Totally Cool Stuff) but after seeing, holding and playing one of these babies, I fell in love.

My guitars:

An Ibanez Gio on the left, it's actually pretty good. It has a really nice hard-rock tone. My US Strat on the left, from 1996 I think, I got it second hand last year for £500, and it's awesome. Some crappy bass in the background my dad bought from eBay.

This must be what's going on then, because alternate tunings work. And of course, if I play with a slide, then you can compensate a bit.

Probably because musicians realised that sticking too close to the bluesy roots was holding the genre back, and so expanded it to contain new influences and take new thematic directions.

Heavy metal is famous among those who know anything about it for its constant progression. It aims to be confronting or "freaky" in some way (to paraphrase Tony Iommi), and the more the better as long as it's got a point. I'm all for heavy blues rock with lotsa distortion and wickedly long solos, but there comes a point where the extreme elements became warranted.
Plus, there's no heavy metal without relevant expository. If heavy metal didn't progress it'd still be all about women rather than all about anything whatsoever.

So, basically I'm happy that metal has become such a broad genre, as it doesn't halt the production of traditional metal but allows the genre to stretch its claws and dodge the silver bullet. The only real shame in metal history is hair metal, which is what happens when progression stagnates, or even reverses. Remember that by the time hair metal reached it's peak (about '86, IIRC), extreme metal was well and truly alive as well and had been growing steadily since '80.

tl;dr: Metal is better than ever, in my opinion. If you want heavy blues rock with extended solos, well, listen to heavy blues rock live recordings?

I rock with a Gibson SG, 1997 Model, black on black.  I also play classical guitar with a Concert Model Enriquez Model C, it's really sweet for filling a medium concert hall without amplification.  Then I also have a Takamine classical/electric as a beater.  I'd post pics but I'm not too web savvy.

I've basically been a snob about guitars ever since i got my 94' talman. Which happens to be an ibanez. I'm just not so much one for the Gio's or Ibanez in general. I'm mostly a Fender guy. oh, and the price on that thing? how did you get a fender strat for 500 quid?!

Acoustic derail!

I've been playing my boss/family friend/landlady's old Yamaha acoustic, which I've just restrung with Ernie Ball Acoustic Slinky strings (12 to 54). It is pretty goddamn nice. Absurdly bright, especially compared to my I-just-smoked-like-50-goddamn-blunts mellow Kay. It's probably the strings that's making the thing sound so bright, but I ain't complaining. I like the sound, and the playability is golden. Intonation's not perfect, but it's close enough for even my perfect-pitched self.

And my Strat-gone-Tele parts should be arriving within the week! I will take photos when I've finally got all of that shit installed, and I'll actually post them (as well as my playing-a-Ric photos from May) when my computer arrives around the same time.

Thank's! Its a lot better than I expected(after reading up) a trem to be on bass, holds tune perfectly and loads of sustain.
Depending on the strings, you don't get much pull-back, that one I only get a little, my other has extremly low tension strings, and has as much pull as a guitar.
They aren't as useful as one on a guitar is, but I can find more than enough to warrant having it there.

Looks cool too!

I utterly love mine, my fretted is my no.1 choice for almost all situations.
You might want to try one first though, a lot of people seem to hate them in the bass community.
I think its mostly the appearance though, I mean, for the price you get a lot, Grover tuners, brass nut and bridge, usually flamed or quilted top, a decent active eq and string through body, or toploading options. As for toploading, its a quickloader.

The fretless, when I got it, the edge of the fretboard was a little too sharp, so I had to roll it, not a big deal, 15 mins with some disposable nail files, sandpaper would have been better, but I was in a rush. Lol, I hate waiting around for anything!

Oh, I believe they will beat a Squier into the dirt! :-D And I love Squier's, just for the record!

I actually got my fretted in Ireland, never seen one since, didn't know they were easy to get in Europe.
My fretless was imported from the US. Still cheaper than most local stuff.

How does the Parker play? Always been curious about them. Favourite band used to use them, but switched to ESPs after a reliability issue (?). Still, love the shape, and they're meant to be pretty lightweight.

My friend has a Parker P-42 which I've played, and they play fine enough, but I think they sound like ass.  Swap the pickups out and you might have a pretty swell sounding guitar.  Don't take my word for it, though.  I've only used it a few times.
