Alas, I don't think we're getting a Starcaster re-issue anytime soon.

I've seen Super-Sonics on eBay around $400-500. But yeah, a reissue would be ace, especially with Squier's spike in quality as of late.

Pirate, what about the chorus and reverb? You can get some awesomeness out of that (see the opening of She Painted Fire Across the Skyline Pt. 1)

I'm not a real big fan of chorus and the reverb would be handled by my amp.  It's got a pretty spectacular built-in spring reverb function.
Ah, okay. I don't really use effects all that much, the only ones I have are on my Tascam MP-GT1 (1gig mp3 player with looping and the ability to cut out a side of the music, also has a metronome, tuner, and effects. Now if it would just stop discharging itself while it is in my bag).

I just got an email back after having pestered their consumer relations people. Turns out that yeah, you're right, they ain't gonna be making Starcasters anytime soon. The way he phrased it, it doesn't seem like they'll be making them at all ever. I doubt it's because of that beginner line being named what it is, though.

I agree with Gaz, that dual-bucker Strat looks pretty bitchin'. It kindof reminds me of one of the guitars used by one of Third Eye Blind's guitarists before they made that monstrosity Blue.

As it turns out, they are putting out a new album, and what I've heard from it is good.

Guys should I get a Melody Maker? It's a freakin' American-made Gibson for under $500.

The only thing that bothers me is that it has one single coil pick-up and two knobs, nothing else. Is that too minimal?

Okay, wow, I'm a little late with this, but: if you're going to get a single pickup guitar for under $500, go for the PRS SE One.  Seriously, absolutely gorgeous guitar, super easy to play, great tone.

I have trouble with PRS myself, they just somehow seem devoid of character. But give me one of their vintage-sunburst doublecuts with a bright soapbar in the neck and a 'bucker in the bridge and you might just have the Perfect Instrument.

PRS seem to be the business suit of guitars.  You wouldn't play one out at a basement gig unless you're tryin' to be funny.

That guitar is quite nice, despite my hatred for PRS. Problem is, if I'm going to settle for one pick-up, it sure as hell isn't going to be a P-90.

I think what I'll end up doing is trying to find one of the discontinued Special (dual pick-up) models used around the city.

But Buddy Holly played a Strat. I'm pretty sure he was one of the first people to adopt it when it was new, in fact.

Technicalities.

I posted about it in the blog thread, but I will post it again here. I GOT A PAYCHECK TODAY FUCK YEAH. $300! I am going to buy Christmas presents for people, yes, but I am also going to buy a Tonebone pedal. I think it might even wind up being that Trimode, because I'm thinking that I could have the Marshall's clean channel, the slight crunch of the first overdrive channel on the Tonebone, and the Weezer-esque "WHOO NICE ORGANIC GROWL" mode of the second OD channel on the Tonebone.

Maybe he means Chuck Berry? Didn't he play a 335? Or whatever it was then, that one might not have been out yet.

Or BB King joined Children of Bodom. That would be interesting to see, in the way watching a trainwreck is interesting to see.

So, I recently traded a vintage Ibanez bass for an Epi Firebird VII.  I'm still waiting for it to arrive.  Does anybody have any experience with these guys?  Likes, dislikes?  Also, the vibrola has been replaced with a stop-bar tailpiece, though the whole unit is being sent and can be re-installed. Anyone have a sense for how reliable these are?  I may opt for a graphite nut, roller bridge, and some locking tuners if it's a little wonky.  thanks!

I played one of these today!:

Suffice to say, I was impressed!  The factory strings hadn't been stretched apparently, since it went out of tune quite a bit when I began to play it, but after about twenty minutes it was fine.  It sounded great, lots of sustain, and had a nice, fat neck.  The finish was quite nice, too.  The only thing I didn't like about it was the ugly hardware.  It was goooooold.

P.S. - I found this on Craigslist today.  If only I had six hundred dollars just kickin' around.

Guy offered me a new* G&L ASAT TRibute for $367.

*Guitar had been in the shop for a year. One of the frets came off and he replaced it, Then another and some more popped off. Fingerboard was "too soft" accrding to him. G&L sent him a brand new neck which he installed. I know not much about these. Apparently these are Made in Indonesia? Not sure of the pickups. He still had not set it up so it did not play that well. Of course I'd have to have that done prior to considering.

I'm still mullling it over. This is basically a 2007 model. Sunburst. Rosewood on the fingerboard. Basically looks like:

ASAT is a military abbreviation for "anti-satellite"; the name was suggested by author Richard Smith after he read an article about the Air Force's ASAT missile. Both Leo Fender and Dale Hyatt reportedly liked the image of a guitar shooting down things in space, and hence the name "stuck". The name is often (incorrectly) interpreted to mean "After Strat, After Telecaster".

You should get the G&L - it's badass.

I feel like I should mention that the local (independent) music store that I'm going to tomorrow to pick up my Danelectro (which was in desperate need of some work) has one of Leo Fender's old prototype guitars in a display case in the middle of the store.  It's a completely beat to shit blonde Esquire that sports two Tele-style neck pickups, and what looks to be a prototype of the original Strat tremolo system.  Supposedly the owner of the store got it super cheap from someone before he knew what it was, then decided to look into its history and found out it had belonged to a musician who was a friend of Leo Fender.  Leo had given him the guitar as a gift.

This is the same store that had Paul Westerberg's Ric 12-string sitting out on the counter one day when I walked in.  Some of the coolest shit goes through there.
