It's a shame that they've turned so expensive though, when part of their original appeal was that they were inexpensive instruments.

Look at those early 60s Danos that are going for around $2,000 now. SIGH.

aw thanks. Here's the one I posted in photothread. Shows the glorious all of the acoustic black widowness.

She's a beauty. But unfaithful to tuning. I'm taking a luthier class end of January. Maybe I can figure out why the G won't stay in tune. Weirdly it will go sharp, I tune it, play awhile...then it goes flat. Bad Grover?

I've heard the G going out of tune more than the other strings has something to do with music theory, but I don't see how it could. In any case, mine always goes out too.
I think what I really heard is that, with equal temperament, the G can sound more out of tune than the other strings. But mine actually physically seems to be out of tune more than its share of the time. That's probably psychological.

I tend to find it's the two Es on my guitars that generally go out, but that's because I tend to bang them against things.

Once I tune it to my content, my G stays in tune pretty faithfully. It's getting it there that's frustrating. It seems like the mark between sharp and flat is 10 times harder to land on than on any other string.

This on every guitar I've played, not just a specific one.

WHAT GIVES. G STRING CONSPIRACY.

Currently deciding on a Warmoth custom model that is a Firebird or a Thinline.    Custom is the way to go.   Lifetime investment, the way you want it.

The reason the G goes out of tune more than the other things, at least, in my reasoning, is that it's too large a string not to be wound, too small to be wound. It's right there in the limit.

The set I have in my jazz box is 0.14 and the G is wound, and it doesnt really go out of tune at all.

I have a Schecter Ultra-III and my G string is not only constantly detuning, but is also always the first to break. No matter how old the strings are. Even if I only replace the G.

I have maybe a dozen sets of strings that are missing the G at this point. Conspiracy, or am I doing something wrong? I've used everything from ultra-lights to medium-heavies. Wound and unwound. Flat steel, nickel, you name it.

It's not really a lifetime investment since fully custom guitars are less likely to rise in value as time passes. A better example of a lifetime investment would be a NOS 1952 Telecaster.

Can someone please explain the point of an 8 string to me?

Extended range, and increased resonance due to a larger neck.

I for one, would buy the Ibanez RG2228 in a heartbeat if I had the money for it, since the extended tonal range, and subsequently expanded chording possibilities are intriguing to me. Plus, that thing sustains and sings like a motherfucker, even with EMG pickups.

But the point, may be a bit difficult to grasp at first. It's basically a 7-string on steroids, and if you don't want, need or simply can't handle a 7-string, then there is no point in an 8-string guitar for you. As for me, I've already taken the plunge years ago, and I want so, SO bad!
If you see one in a store, try it out. It's really quite easy to play, after you've taken the first 5-10 minutes to get used to the wider fretboard.

What about 12-string guitars?

Only six count, really. The remaining six just enhance the sound, much like the 13 sympathetic strings on an electric sitar.

It is a lifetime investment from the perspective that it'll be a guitar I built myself, put my own work into (besides the finish, etc.) and have it set up the way I want.   So it'll stay (A) with me forever (B) and can pass it down to a family member.    I wouldn't care about the value of it in dollars.    *whistle*

I know that feeling. I'm thinking about scraping money together this summer and either building a clone of a Custom Esquire (double binding yeeee) or a late '60s Jazz Bass. It probably won't cost me more that $600-700, but the sentimental value of having a custom-built instrument is amazing.

Yeah, I didn't wanna sound corny -- but that is how it is to me.   I'm looking at shelling up to 1,200 on this -- but I think I can get a much better deal.   I can do the wiring with some help of a friend who is a musical equipment genius (makes his own pedals and shit).   Instruments are like women in many ways.   Heck, I still have my first two guitars I've ever owned that sound like crap and don't even play well anymore just because of how attached I was to them.   Both were given to me.   Doubt I'll ever give them up, regardless of the crappy brands they are (Silvertone acoustic, but it's from the 80s -- I dig it and a Harmony strat rip off, but it's got a bunch of holes drilled in it, and is just a funky monkey!)

Those sound like cool ideas for builds.    Got any finishes in mind?

If I do the Esquire, probably 3-tone sunburst. I found a site that does finished, bound Tele bodies for $300. I'm sending them an email just to check on the binding, though. The Customs of the late '50s and '60s were bound front and back, I'm worried the bodies these guys sell are front only. If that's the case, I'll switch to an unbound body in red. I want to see if I can have someone do up a custom control plate as well. Volume/Tone and the on-off slider switch from a Mustang, instead of a three-way blade with all that screwy tone-switching.

The Jazz Bass would be black with a matching headstock, and a bound neck with block inlays. I got the inspiration off of this beast Elderly's selling for $13,500.

Black (jetglo) is probably the most boring finish they have 4003s in. I'd sooner go with fireglo or even turquoise over black.

No, no, no. Rosewood fretboard, matching headstock. Who knows. Maybe I'll end up going Sherwood Green metallic.

edit: Eff it, I'm gonna do the Esquire. I got an email back from that site, their bodies ARE double bound.

I'm sure you can trade it off through craigslist for a different finish if you really want. Rics are hard to come by since they're not sold retail so their resale/trade value is phenomenally high.
