This is the body I'm thinking about purchasing.   Something similar to it when I get my refund check in February.   It's beautiful.   Black Korina. . . . MMM.

I missed this thread <3

Did you get that SG Custom yet?

Not yet, but my friend sold his exact one to his Dad, so I'm gonna be nipping at his heels to get his Dad to sell it to me. Omnomnom.

I have a Schecter Ultra-III and my G string is not only constantly detuning, but is also always the first to break. No matter how old the strings are. Even if I only replace the G.

I have maybe a dozen sets of strings that are missing the G at this point. Conspiracy, or am I doing something wrong? I've used everything from ultra-lights to medium-heavies. Wound and unwound. Flat steel, nickel, you name it.

I have a Daisy Rock, which is basically a short scale Schechter "for girls." It never freakin stayed in tune. And the strings always broke, and now that you mention it, G was usually the culprit. In my case it was because the grooves on the nut were too sharp (the nut itself also fell off). The guitar store guys said I could sand down the nut grooves to make them both deeper and less sharp but I bought a much better guitar that same day and haven't used the DR since. I hesitate to say "Schechter sucks" but it's a mightly coincidence here.

In other guitar news, I feel like my self-teaching has hit a brick wall and have signed up for lessons! It's my Xmas gift to myself. I have the first lesson this week. I am worried about being totally humiliated, though, considering this teacher handles a lot of kids as well as adults, maybe I'm not that bad? If anything paying for lessons will give me the push to practice every day because I totally have NOT been playing every day, as I should.

Next time I have the strings off, I'll give the nut a much closer look. It shouldn't be sharp considering that it's like a little wheel, but stranger things have happened. I love the guitar otherwise. Way better than the Ibanez Rio I had before it. That thing wasn't worth buying and keeping for so long.

If I can quote Mitch Hedberg, "I tried teaching myself guitar, but I did not know guitar, so I was not a very good teacher."

Self teaching will do that to you.  I think in my five years of playing I've hit about ten or twelve brick walls.  Sort of the downside of teaching yourself, really.  But I prefer it, personally, because I am able to build my own style from the ground up and learn all of my lessons without real precaution, which I like because it helps them to sink in when I mess up.  I definitely go at a slower pace than my friend who actually took lessons for a long time when it comes to learning a song and retaining it, but I write a lot more than him and can improvise a lot more efficiently, which I think is a direct result.

Are you getting private lessons or are you in a small group setting?

Private. I might have preferred a group, since I could compare notes with classmates and maybe find a like-minded musical mate, but this guy lives in my neighborhood (convenient!) and only charges $15 per 40-minute lesson. Much cheaper than, say, taking a class at the local university. Once I have good fundamentals, then I can worry about my "style."

I think that those two compliment each other.  I don't think going to lessons will limit you, I just feel like being self-taught produces a much more crude-yet-pure result.  I know that when I pick up my guitar, I'll play something totally of myself, of a method I put blood and tears into, and something that reflects something with no curve or tint.

I guess it's the same photograph with a different frame.

Is there some specific fundamental method you want to learn, or is this just incentive to practice in a more effective manner?

Orange CR15R Crush 15W amp
Limited Edition Les Paul Custom Silverburst (I found a very affordable price for it)

For all your not Boris liking, you bought Wata's guitar of choice (LP Custom) and amp brand of choice (Orange).  :-D

It's actually more like two Retro 50s and an AD 140 perched on top of three 4x12"s, but you get the idea. Her rig is about twice as tall as she is.

Jeans, if you're starting out that is a good combo.    I prefer real Gibson's over Epiphone's and the Orange amp you bought isn't a tube amp -- but for the price you paid -- you're getting a good deal and you'll have a nice little set up.  Get a pedal or too (if it suits your fancy) and you're on your way to rock and roll.

Yeah, it is a little crazy.   I dunno though.   I guess if I use my Musician's Friend CC, that I have no problem paying the extra 5/10 bucks a month to get a Gibson Firebird as opposed to the Epiphone model.   Then again, I always prefer to play whatever I'm looking at before I buy it.    There are a lot of Epiphone's that have played just as good if not better than the Gibson's of similar models that are 300-500 bucks more, if not higher.    Just gotta do what you think is in your best interest.   I just know I'll never play out of a solid state amp the rest of my life.   That is a guarantee.

Orange Amps are great.   I actually had that 15R model myself.   It has a real great clean tone to it and gets a real bluesy crunch with the boost/OD option.   It's really cool for the price and yeah, it definitely looks awesome.   Orange amps are definitely my favorite.   You got a nice little set up bro.

That is not a quality issue, it is a poor fucking design issue. Take the most old-school, road-worthy Les Paul or SG and drop it like Patrick did and you will have the same result.

I seem to recall hearing that the heel design on the first double-cutaway LP Specials was so weak that the neck would sometimes just fall off.

And it that a Scottish Coat of Arms above it?  It looks a lot like:   Or, a lion rampant within a double tressure flory counter-flory Gules.

Beaumont, I hate you for that guitar. Give plz.

So I FINALLY got the screw I was looking for, and I go to install my Fender Mute, because, well, it's pretty. I mean, I'll probably never even use the thing, but it's too pretty to just leave there. Anyway, I go to install it, and what do I find out? One of the screwholes is completely stripped. I found out because the screw just plain popped out of the hole, it didn't even give me wood shavings. And since the thing is spring loaded, when that popped, the other one was overstressed and popped out too. This time, I got wood shavings. Fuck! I don't like seeing wood shavings come out of a guitar I spent over a grand on.

So basically I have to wait a month before my Minwax wood filler gets here so I can fill the holes, re-drill some pilot holes for the fucker (and make damn certain they are centered and square to the body) and then try again. That pisses me off though.

Dude, just break some toothpicks in half and shove them in the screw hole.  I wound up doing that with some strap locks I got for my Firebird when I found out one hole was a bit larger than the screws I got.  Works peachy.
