I'm more of an effects and amps guy. I revel in creating beautiful noise despite - or even because of - the oldness or crappiness of the guitar (one of my favorite guitars is a 1960s Silvertone that was made for Sears and retailed for, I think, around $50 when it came out; these days you can get one for around $100-$200 though finding the exact model is very difficult).

Here is a shot of me playing it in action:

Anyway, that's beside the point. The point is pedals. What setups do you use? Right now for live shows I'm running into one of these:

...and from there into this magical baby, which I really only use for delay and looping...

When I go to the practice space next, I'll take some pictures of the whole setup.

I'm buying my amp today. If I have enough money left over, I'm going to get a distortion pedal as well. By either tonight, or next week, I will be rocking this setup:

I want to add a distortion pedal of some sort. Even though that amp's got an effect for that. I'm just lazy, and I like pedals more. I don't need to buy a delay pedal though, until I replace this amp. ^.^ Saving monies is great!

EDIT - Sorry about the huge pictures. I also want to replace the guitar someday with a Koa and Rosewood Tele or a Lite Ash Tele. Mmhmm...Telecasters...

We have one of those exact same Squires (same color even), it is a solid guitar.

What kind of/level of distortion do you want? I mean, do you want screaming Bigmuff feedback noise or just something to rock a little extra harder?

It's usually best not to use the amp's distortion if it can possible be avoided.

I've never been one for many effects, actually. I feel I'm the opposite in that I like to get the craziest noises out of my guitars without using pedals, just by tweaking the amp setup and the guitar setup, the tuning, or hitting it with a drumstick or sticking a drumstick in its strings, or even duct taping over the pickups, which actually resulted in a fantastic tone on one of my guitars.

However, I have recently made a foray into effects. I use single-delay on one of my recent tunes.

Playing a guitar with an empty beercan as a slide produces nice results when coupled with massive delay and looping.

EDIT: I'm not super huge on pedals either (like I said, I only use two of the Line 6's functions) especially compared to our other guitar player who uses 5-6 pedals most shows, but the fact is that when you're playing live it's very convenient to be able to go from "clean" to "loud" by hitting a switch. Obviously it's cool to do crazy things to your guitar but unless you stop between every song to adjust the amp's settings, you're still somewhat limited.

Right now its just a digitech rp 50, though i do have a marshall guvnor i stick after it to seriously fuzz shit up. Havent used it in a while, though.

right now I've got a Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer Pedal and it rocks awesomely. The next one I'm looking to get is a chorus pedal but I'm having a hard time choosing between Boss's Super Chorus and their Chorus Ensemble. Can anyone shed some light on these two products?

When I first got my electric guitar 7 or 8 years ago, my Dad made me promise that I would learn how to play it first and then get into effects. I never learned how to play the damn thing, but one time my friend let me borrow one of those multi-effects-in-one pedals, and I literally spent two hours straight playing with it. I am a complete whore for sound and the possibility of sound. If I ever had a band or at least some way of recording music, I would create absolutely unlistenable noise bullshit and spacey nonsense.

As it stands, though, I have a black Fender Squire and a small-ish amp with Overdrive built in. I used to fuck around with feedback and playing the strings with different things (I tried out everything my pocket knife had on the thing) but with no way to record the results and no one to subject it to, I eventually got bored.

You basically just described the band I want to start once my drumset arrives (a Ludwig Accent Combo with Zildjian cymbals; very much a beginner set, as I am a beginner, but good quality considering the price I got it for), but it's on backorder right now from Musiciansfriend.com so I have no idea when it will arrive.

I plan on stealing my friend's guitars and making them SCREAM (both the guitars and the friends). The results will hopefully be non-musically musical.

I love effects, and I'm not too big on the modeling and DSP amps, but it's cool to have extra sounds to mess around with.

Honestly, I tried that pedal I mentioned earlier through the amp, and it sounded kind of crappy. When I have the amp model on either Metal setting and the Gain all the way up, it's nice and crunchy. The Delay effect is great. My favorite one. The way I have it set up now, is I can switch between the Metal distortion channel and a clean channel with delay with the footswitch that came with it. So it's more like having effect pedals than without the switch. The drawback however. I can't use more than one effect with an amp model at once. :[ This saddens me.

Eventually, I will get a nice tube amp, and bunch of effect pedals. Or I'll get the effect pedals and make both channels clean (with different amp models).

But for now, I will play with the built in sounds and make cool musics.

Im a reverb whore. and all my amps are old, so they have spring reverb tanks *sexyness*.

But as for pedals, i like the cheap danelectro ones. they cost about $30AU and are fucking brilliant.

Oh yeah, I use the pedal option on my amp, but it's just so that I can switch between its channels and settings. I just meant that I've not bought a pedal specifically.

Ballard, I've recently been using that Bigmuff instead of the Superfuzz. Hitting the Lead switch on that Fender tube amp and then cranking that Bigmuff is really working well for me.

I had band practice tonight but forgot to take pictures. We're playing a show in less than a week, maybe I'll post some action shots if our drummer's wife takes any (which she always does).

I've been trying to decide between an Ibanez TS808 and a Big Muff.

I'm leaning towards the Big Muff all thanks to Dinosaur Jr but open to any suggestions.

Bigmuff is definitely the way to go if you're going to be doing feedback-drenched leads. If you're going for distortion on chords, though, I'd recommend the Superfuzz I pictured earlier in the thread.

-electro harmonix "holy grail" reverb
-electro harmonix double muff
-behringer digital delay
-and some phaser thingie, i forgot the name,...

through a orange or-120M (+crappy cabinet)
or fender fm-212R, depending on song/band

I heart effects pedals. You can definetly go overboard using them, but i dont think you can own to many. Here is my setup.

Boss RC20XL Loop Pedal (this is either at the front or back of my chain depending on which band I am playing in)>Pro Co Rat > Marshall Jackhamer > Boss PS-5 (Pitch shifter whammy thing)> Boss DD-5 Delay with an external tap tempo > Shitty Danelectro Tremlo > Boss RC-3 Reverb thingy > Sovtek Midget 50 > Orange 2x12

In the next month I will be adding another reverb. Other pedals that I am adding, just not yet, Line 6 DL-4 it does neat things, a DOD 440 Clone, Digitech Whammy and an EH Pog or Hog.

Also, back to the onto zerodrones original post, those old japanese made guitars from the 70's are relatively cheap, sound awesome, and are really small and light, (i think mines shorter scale and has a thin neck, also is made of ply)
