Inspired by the Ghost World thread, I think he's great. Anyone want to enthuse about their favourite moments?

Has anyone seen either of the movies he's directed, Trees Lounge or Animal Factory? I think they're both really good, Trees Lounge a little more so than the latter.

Trees Lounge reminds me of Ghost World, at least insofar as there's a lot of boredom in suburbia going on and Buscemi is in some kind of romantic thing with a teenager, as an adult. There're many fine moments and I have to go watch it again.

Animal Factory is a bit like The Glass House, but it has Willem Dafoe instead of Alan Alda, and it's not in the 70s so it's less harsh.

He's a bit typecast as just the random sleazy guy, often playing down-and-out guys like bellhops, etc. but he does do that stuff really well.

Wow, looking at the imdb site, DAMN has this man been in a lot of movies! And I feel bad for having only seen a handful of them...

So anyway, my top picks are (in no particular order):
-The Wedding Singer
-Ghost World
-Monsters, Inc. (Yay for Voice acting!)
-Home on the Range
-Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams (...Yes, I saw the Spy Kids movie. You can make fun of me)
-Big Fish
-Armageddon
-Con Air

And I am wondering how big is role is in the new movie, "I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry", which I think looks really good.

Steve Buscemi is always amazing. There are way too many awesome roles he's done to just pick one, but I will anyway.

Danny McGrath from Billy Madison. Billy (Adam Sandler) has had his epiphany, and decides to look up the guy that he and his buddies used to pick on back in school, Danny McGrath, and apologize. He does this, and the camera stays on Danny (Buscemi) as he hangs up the phone, gets a WTF look on his face for a second, then shrugs as he decides that the call was sincere. Then he crosses Billy off of a list of people he's going to kill, now that he (Danny) has grown up and become a serial killer.

That alone made it a memorable performance, but then Buscemi's character actually ends up playing an important part in the resolution of the film, showing the importance of maintaining positive karma.

Well, he could've still died. You can hear shots fired after he leaves the warehouse. It's debatable.

Turn the volume way up (but be careful). You can hear shots being fired, but you can also hear Mr. Pink surrendering to the cops. Of course, they could shoot him anyway.

He does get shot, if I recall correctly. I remember hearing him complain about how he was shot. He survives, but he was still shot before surrendering to the cops. I should go watch this movie again to confirm.

Steve Buscemi is one of my favorite actors because he's had his hand in almost everything. And, when he is in everything, most of the time, he's superb. He can play damn near anything, and play that part well; even if he is kind'a funny-looking, the guy's got charisma out the ears.

He dies in all of his appearances in Coen brothers' movies, and his remains get smaller each time. IIRC, it's some kind of inside joke between Buscemi and the Coens.

Edit: I haven't seen Paris, je t'aime, so I don't know if this is still going on or not.

It's been a long while since I last watched it, but I don't think Chet (as mentioned by Inlander above) from the glorious 'Barton Fink' dies?

BTW, 'Interview' looks pretty interesting I reckon. Latest one he's directing, also starring in it.

No, Chet's not a big enough role to die. He's only in a handful of scenes and never really says anything much other than your usual hotel concierge schtick.

True. He doesn't have the classic good looks to be a Leading Man, but whatever role he's given, you know he will nail it.

He's been in a lot of shit movies, I reckon... those Adam Sandler vehicles, Reservoir Dogs (heh), um... Armageddon! THE ISLAND!! OK, better stop. My point being it doesn't mean he doesn't act well, nor that the movies he's more involved with aren't pretty ace.

Reservoir Dogs was a shitty movie? Huh. I thought it was supposed to be one of the better ones. It made one of my favorite directors famous, at least.

A lot of people don't care for Quentin Tarentino's movies. Despite all the violence, language, and tricks with presenting events out of chronological order, what they really come down to is character study. QT loves to create characters, then put them into situations that most people will never find themselves in, and see how they react. They are usually people with morals and values other than "the norm" but rarely without some admirable qualities. How will they act, what will they say? For me, it's the dialogue that keeps me glued to the screen.

Reservoir Dogs gets lumped in with the Action movies because it's QT, but there's very little action. It mostly happens off camera. So people looking for superkool action are usually disappointed. It's the characters that make that movie, but for a lot of people, that's just not enough. Where's the plot? Where's the Action?

Exactly, his movies are all about the dialogue and character interaction. The plot was that they were going to steal stuff and they had an undercover cop with them. Seems pretty straightforward.

I've actually never seen it, I was just being smart. I have somehow ended up seeing every other Tarantino movie (barring the latest) and didn't enjoy any of them that much.

Just to chip in with more Buscemi-lovin', he also directed one of the best Sopranos episodes. All snow and sin and abyss-black comedy, like Fargo meets GoodFellas.

Unless of course Chet was what was in the mysterious package that Barton gets from John Goodman???

This has only just occurred to me so could be completely wrong, but keeps in with the "his remains get smaller each time" theme.

Obviously if Chet is in a scene after the package turns up, I will take this back, but I'm just speculating about a hypothesis here.

I just saw Paris, Je t'Aime this weekend, and buscemi directed/acted in one of the stories. It was pretty much hilarious.

One of the best stories in the movie.

He is an amazing man.
