I actually find the theremin work in that song to be one of the less interesting parts, probably because he's playing it in a really low range for some reason and the theremin's a lot more awesome when it's all ghostly. The bit with the dude rubbing his hand on the carpet to create atmospheric background noise is my favourite, I think.

I saw the Twilight Singers preform that song live.

There was no theremin, though, but it was pretty great.

I DO.

Because the theremin is like, the most awesome instrument ever made bar the ondes Martenot.

Back when I was 13 I saw/heard the most awesome performance of some Messaien piece featuring the ondes Martenot by the Sydney Symphony. There were people leaving through the performance because it didn't fall in their nice warm little comfort zones.

On the other hand, theremins are fucking great and Gnarls Barkley is decidedly above average.

damnit, thanks to that I seem to be forgetting the words to Crazy and having them replaced by the odd drone of the theremin

Now I'm sober, I'll say it's all right. What I was trying to think of conveying is that I think that the Theremin is a pretty over-rated instrument. People get completely caught up in its unconventional playing method and don't really listen to the sound. As Johnny said, the Theremin only really sounds good when its up in that high, ethereal register that most people know it from. I mean, I will be fair, it is a versatile instrument, and it is also an instrument I would very much like to own, but in that song it really isn't doing anything that a good keyboard couldn't do.

Yeah. I know moments in that high register from other songs where the instrument becomes transcendental, but down there in that cover it just sounds like a vocoder with someone going "wah woo wah wee wah" into it.
