New York Compilation
« on: 08 Jul 2007, 12:12 »

I've got a friend who's turning 18 soon, and I thought I would make him a compilation of music from New York City.

Any ideas?

He's a Rock kinda guy

I've got:

Ramones
Talking Heads
The Slackers
The Velvet Underground

DNA, Sonic Youth, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Swans, Unsane?

There are loads of good things from New York.

The Hold Steady are currently based in Brooklyn, but that might be cheating as they're originally from Minnesota.  Texas is the Reason, Gorilla Biscuits, Saetia, Reagan Youth, The Slackers, Jets to Brazil, Gogol Bordello, Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan(?), The World/Inferno Friendship Society, King Django... yeah, that's all I got.

Oh, and I'd also suggest including "New York State of Mind" by Billy Joel.  Post the mix when you're done!

LCD Soundsystem is mostly based in New York, even if Murphy was originally from Jersey. Also, you can use the song "New York I Love You" if you're looking for a slow track.

But then again, I think LCD Soundsystem should be in every mix.

How about They Might Be Giants?  And if you want a double dose of Gotham goodness, go for their song "New York City."

Alright, so here's the compilation under time constraint. I would have liked to take longer on it, but you know, can't move the guy's birthday.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Clap Your Hands! - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones
I'm Waiting For The Man - The Velvet Underground
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads
Because The Night - Patti Smith & Bruce Springsteen
Someday - The Strokes
Precipitate - Interpol
One Way or Another - Blondie
Love & Emotion - Mink De Ville
No Sleep Till Brooklyn - The Beastie Boys
Hootchie Cootchie Man - New York Dolls
Little Red Light - Fountains of Wayne (alright, they're not from new york, but this song about new york)
Kool Thing - Sonic Youth
Violent Life - Blonde Redhead
Staring at the Sun - TV on the Radio
The Real Ska - The Slackers
Walk On The Wild Side - Lou Reed
A Heart In New York (Live) - Simon and Garfunkel
New York state of mind - Billy Joel

Now put "Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side" on the end, and you've got yourself a mix.
