Burn Notice
« on: 18 Jul 2007, 16:56 »

So, I've recently watched the 4 episodes of Burn Notice that are out, on USA - as they tend to keep replaying them over and over.

It's a surprisingly good show.  Jeffrey Donovan is the protagonist, and for someone I've never seen before - he's really good.  Gabrielle Anwar is what she always is; a really good actress that just happens to be incredibly hot.  Bruce Campbell is definitely more in his element in television than he is in the movies, but I've always thought that.  At any rate, he's hysterical.

The show has some action, some spy stuff, some intellectual moments (Michael Westen, the protagnist is a pretty intelligent character), and some romantic appeal too, as Gabrielle's character is hot for Westen, even though they're exes.

Anyway, if you can't find anything on, or you don't feel like reruns, give it a look.  It's fun.

The website is here: http://www.usanetwork.com/series/burnnotice/

Is it just me, or does this show seem to operate on the same principles as the A-Team? You've got a guy who is pretty much forced to go underground, and makes his money by using his specialized skills to help the little guy fight against injustices...

I really like this show, and I think that Jeffrey Donovan is absolutely perfect for this role. He plays the suave part pretty much flawlessly. That, and now I kind of want to wear a suit everywhere and grin disarmingly at people all the time.

I hadn't really thought about it in this light, but now that I do, you're right.  I guess it's all just in the presentation then, because I like the hell out of this show, and even as a kid I knew the A-Team wasn't that good.

I actually only watched it BECAUSE of Bruce Campbell because my love for him is beyond words. And then the show turned out to be pretty good.  Not too shabby.

same here bro, everytime Bruce Campbell comes on the scene, he steals the show. its good show through, I like how the show functions like anyother show on USA, The Dead Zone, Monk, Psych, all good shows now. I think the USA network is on to something now with all these good hits.

Not to get entirely off topic here, but is Psych any good? I have only seen commercials of something that sounds like a mildly interesting idea. So, is it a mildly interesting idea done well, or something more?

Psych is okay in my book, because this slacker guy is fooling the police into think that he is a psychic, so thats means that the police are stupid. I dont really watch it that much because of them premis.

I've managed to catch two episodes of Burn Notice, and watched an episode of Psych afterwards. I was duly impressed by both, and now actively look for USA Network when I'm channel surfing.

P.S. Is it still called channel surfing?

Psyche is pretty great. The slacker guy was drilled by his great detective father from nearly birth on detective ways and has a photographic memory because of it. It made him good at solving mysteries and it's also a fun little show.

I've seen an episode of Burn Notice and I'm still not sure what to make of it. It looks good, but I think I'd need to watch more episodes to really think anything of it. I did not know Bruce Campbell was in it. Cool beans.

Burn Notice is now officially my new favorite show.  I don't miss it on Thursday nights.  Psych and Monk are both good as well, but I've always thought Tony Shaloub was a great actor anyway.

I really need to see this show, if not for the acting and the story, but for home town hero Bruce "Don't Call Me Ash" Campbell, and in his element no less

Burn Notice is a stupid show.  The stories are fairly predictable, the acting is mediocre (Except, of course, for Bruce Campbell, who is the man), and the voice-over can be annoying.

Still, I watch the show.  It's a guilty pleasure.  It's like a MacGuyver placebo.

It's a really great show, and I've been following it since it premiered, but it could really use some improvement as far as the story telling goes, especially from season two onwards.  Take the season premier this week.  Someone tries to kill him, but instead of focusing all of his attention on that like a normal person, he decides to take a side job.  Who does that?  Given, the side job was a serious one, but still, this isn't the first time they've done something like this, and they're not always as serious or important as this one.

The commercials for Burn Notice more or less turn me off. I'm generally oblivious to bad acting, but this guy I can see through from watching commercials alone.

Bruce Campbell's in it, though? He was on my hit list! I may have to watch the show now.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it. It's fun to watch, but it's nothing I would call great TV.

That wasn't the premier of season 3 - rather the new episodes are continuation of season 2.

And if you don't like Donovan as the lead, I'm not sure what more you want from an actor.  He's really good, especially for someone I'd only ever seen as 'bad guy #1' in a CSI Miami episode before.

Meh - I think it's good television.  But then, maybe good television is an oxymoron, like military intelligence, or jumbo shrimp...

Beats the hell out of all the so called 'reality' programming out there as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, Donovan usually played criminals before BN.  Besides this show, I've also seen him on an episode of Law & Order and an episode of Monk, both times as the criminal.

Even in Blair Witch 2, he played a guy who'd spent a good amount of time in a mental institution, and was selling stolen electronics.

One of the first "quirky violent professional assassin" TV series I've seen shown in Australia. Dexter and Psyche came out afterwards, I believe.

Great show. Witty dialogue, but there's just something funny about it that isn't made by words.

Answer:  Cheap spray-on tan to try and imitate some weird idea the creators have that all women in Miami are tanned.  I don't know why they'd think that, since I live in Miami, and can honestly say that people down here don't look like that.

Though, it could be intentional, since the character is apparently supposed to be Irish or something.  Popular stereotype is that they don't tan very well or something.

Well, if they weren't fake-tanned/burned, you wouldn't identify the attempt to be Irish! =O

Burn Notice has Daniel Jackson. Motherfuckin' Daniel Jackson. Admittedly, only in the second and third seasons, and only for a 4 episode arc... But still, Daniel Motherfuckin' Jackson.

it's literally impossible for me to care about this show even though it has Bruce Cambell (who i love).

the reason? FX is the channel right below USA for me, and FX has It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Burn Notice is almost an advertisement for the spy industry. Showing how cool you can be, with instructions on how he does his coolness. And, well I want to be that cool.

I think this show is pretty awesome. It's funny, it's... action-y...

In particular, I love the casual narration and all the tidbits of advice in it.

I also like how this still has the satisfaction in each episode that someone was brought to justice without it just being another goddamned cop show.

Also, Bruce fucking Campbell.

Yeah, I never thought of her as attractive, tan or no. Unlike the rest of America, she's just too fucking thin.
And tanned.
Love Burn Notice though.

Bumpity bump bump bump.

So the 3rd season has just finished a couple of days ago and I thought it was great. Really looking forward to next season to see where they take it from here.

well i think the very last shot is supposed to show that michael isn't on his way to prison.  not right away anyhow.

my concern is after all the "we're a team" stuff before the big chase, next season might be michael off doing actual spy work again and leaving behind sam and fi.  i mean come on, i'm watching that show for bruce campbell!

I don't get USA, so I'm waiting on the 8-day delay on Hulu for the season finale. I love this show, although there are some times that it seems like they miss the obvious way to get around problems for the sake of plot.

Fi is way too thin, but it seems like she actually has some muscle, so it at least makes more sense for her character than if she were rail-thin with no muscle mass.

I used to keep up with this show a lot, seasons 1-2 especially, but somewhere along the line I missed a few episodes and while I've tried to get back into it, it just hasn't worked out. Also from the ads it looks like they're using the same season finale for every season (Michael: "I GOTTA GO IT ALONE" Fi: "WAAAH" *explosions* Voiceover: "NOW HE WILL LEARN THE COST OF THE TRUTH") but maybe that is just bad advertising.
