That is kind of a silly question.

Yes obviously, due to the numerous albums they have sold.

Perhaps if you had inserted a "here" or "on these here forums" between does and anyone then we could be in business.

I used to think Coldplay were terribly boring, but then one day while driving home from a play I realized that they are perfect.  Perfect for having on in the background of a car ride while having a conversation about something completely different.  In a sense, they are great if you're not actually paying attention to them.

This is as close as I will probably get to liking Coldplay.

I didn't mind them when I first heard them, but they released a string of singles soon after (this was around 2003) that sounded so damn samey, and at the same time they were all over the press, so I started hating them. I don't know how good/bad their album tracks are, but I don't care, their singles all sound the same, and are basically what Thom Yorke would write if he had 50% of his current IQ, and a gigantic tree trunk stuck up his arse.

It doesn't help I think Chris Martin is a gynormous douche. The only good things he's ever done is poking at his public image in both Extras and Shaun of the Dead.

So true. But even then i think Yorke would be more enjoyable, if not a little more pissed off. man, have you seen Chris Martin interviewed- FUCKIN MORON.

Anyway, I don't really object to anyone liking them, and as stated in a previoius post obviously alot of people do. There could well be SOMETHING i'm missing...

AGREED... I think he was put off by the fact that they were overhyped... the sound did not match the amount of press they were getting. But to dislike a perfectly good band solely because of hype is what we call snobby

Well louis loves them!

I can't say they are a favorite, but well, if one is listening to a radio station in the car and some older coldplay comes on one blesses the DJ for choosing one of the more listenable radio bands available.

I have never been particularly fond of Coldplay. This might be attributed to the fact that at the time they were popular U2 was one of my favorite bands and I felt that Chris Martin was simply ripping off their sound and also trying to be a political activist-hero just like Bono. Now that I think of it, I don't really have a problem with the other guys in the band and they all seem like decent musicians but Chris Martin is someone I find really bothersome.

On a side note, when I was playing in a band my freshman year in college we were discussing Coldplay and it was discovered that all of us except for the bassist shared a high level of contempt for the band. After learning that our bassist loved them, we decided to start looking for a replacement for him.

Whenever I listen to Coldplay (which thankfully is very rarely) I just can't imagine that it was written and performed by a group of actual people.  This is music that would be created by a robotic race of aliens that were attempting to take over the planet by pretending to be human beings.  There is no charisma, there is no personality there.  It's dull.

But hey if you like that kind of thing more power to you I guess?

I have the respect for them that I have for any guitar band that sells as many records as they do.

I also appreciate their talent as musicians - their wacky guitar tunings are very interesting and lead to some cool sounds and chords.

I also really like some of their more obscure tracks; 'Til Kingdom Come,' which they wrote for Johnny Cash; 'Warning Sign,' which I love; 'Spies,' one of the many songs on Parachutes that they don't play any more.

I'd certainly see them live, I like them as a live band.

I enjoyed A Rush Of Blood To The Head when I first heard it. I still have it in my collection, and I listen to it from time to time, but working for a radio station for 5 years now has mostly killed a lot of the enjoyment I might have gotten from listening to it.

I like to pretend that Coldplay only ever released that one album. It's just better that way.

I don't hate any band because of hype, and I never said that. What a ridiculous assumption to make. I love The Arcade Fire and, for fuck's sake, they were on the cover of Time magazine.

It's basically what Ishotdanieljohnston said: they sounded bland and were hailed by all and sundry (even the indie press, who ought to know better), which made me go from yawning to actively hating them.

Coldplay is alright.  They're not spectacular.   But I listen to them every now and then.  One of their songs was on the Garden State soundtrack, and it's a pretty entertaining song.

Good point! When I first saw the trailer for that movie '28 Weeks Later' and listened to the song in the background I thought to myself, 'Did Radiohead really write a song for this movie??!' Only to seconds later conclude, "No, wait, this is just some bad impersonation. Must be Muse."
True story.

Okay, how about this, then. No comparisons:

Coldplay simply sound completely bland and uninteresting, and I really, REALLY fail to care about the extended falsettos whining about NOTHING AT ALL sung by a man married to a Hollywood celebrity.

At least Thom Yorke has something relevant to say.

"Yellow" is the best song Thom Yorke didn't write 15 years ago.

Beyond that they're a bunch of useless fucks, just like every other British pop band since U2.

In fact you know what, fuck U2 as well. Joshua Tree does not give Bono an excuse to act like the pompous vapid Al Gore of the new milennium.

Anyhow, yeah, I do agree wholeheartedly about Bono. Making a few good albums doesn't give him a license to be the most pompous twat, misrepresenting Ireland abroad for all and sundry and playing the celebrity game. We don't give a shit bono!

Hey, I have no problem with you saying they're shit, becuase that's in the eye of the beholder and I don't think they've done a good song in five years. But the Radiohead comparison is lazy and doesn't apply. The first Coldplay album sounds a little bit like The Bends, and the rest of their stuff sounds a bit like 'Karma Police' just becuase it's got fucking pianos and a high voice in it. Aside from that, the comparisons are bollocks. Nothing Coldplay has done sounds anything like, say 'Paranoid Android' or, God forbid, 'Kid A,' 'The National Anthem,' 'There, There.' And I love Radiohead anyway; Coldplay aren't on the same level as them by any stretch, although to be fair they only have half as many albums so it's not really a fair comparison.

The Radiohead/Coldplay/Muse comparisons are lazy. Hooray they are from the same country and the vocalists are tenors, woo hoo, but seriously, they don't sound the same. If Coldplay and Muse are both ripoffs of the same band, they'd sound the same. Find a new argument, because that one has seriously been beaten to death already and now you're beating the zombie corpse come to eat your brains.

Muse might slightly be accused of starting off trying to sound like Radiohead but by the second CD they just sounded like Muse.

Precisely. The first CD you could suggest it, just about. But by the second one...Radiohead haven't done anything like 'Newborn' or 'Bliss,' or 'Space Dementia.'

I kinda like some of their stuff.  I never go out of my way to listen to them anymore, but when I'm at a job, it's one of the most tolerable things that comes up on the radio with any frequency.
