Is Centrino any good?
Ernest:
I'm getting a laptop and my dad is encouraging me to get one with a Centrino processor because it would be cheaper. He says Centrino is pretty good. I am skeptical. Answers?
SpacemanSpiff:
Technically, Centrino is a combination of a certain kind of Intel CPU, Intel motherboard chips and their WLAN chipset. The only real alternative there is are setups by AMD.
And yes, Centrino is good. I wouldn't look for the badge as such, but the Core 2 Duo CPU (or basically any Core architecture CPU, really) is a lot better than anything AMD has to offer right now, both in terms of speed and in terms of heat (which translates to how long your notebook will run). The advantage of the Centrino architecture is, that all chips work together efficiently, something that's worth a damn lot in a notebook. But if a notebook only has a Core CPU with a different WLAN chipset, it's still good.
Catfish_Man:
Dunno why Centrino would be cheaper. Celeron, yes, but Centrino is just branding on Intel's mobile cpu + chipset.
DavidGrohl:
Centrino is a pretty broad term. It covers computer CPU/Motherboard/WLAN chipsets since 2003.
The new Santa Rosa (which is the fourth(ish?)) generation of Centrino technology) is new and going to cost you a bundle. Like any computer technology, the older it is -- the less it's going to cost you.

He might not have actually said that.
