Tony Wilson R.I.P
« on: 10 Aug 2007, 17:34 »

The cult figure responsible for Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays and many others, as well as the Hacienda, the club central to the Manchester music scene in the 70's and 80's has died from a year long battle with kidney cancer. The poor bastard was 57.
People, thoughts...

This has come as a complete shock to me. I didn't even know he had cancer. A true individual, started a great label, and is responsible for unleashing Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays - some of my favourite music - on the world. And his bands' influence led to Primal Scream, too.

I'm confused... how does Wilson dying slightly older than Joe Strummer make him a stupid Post Punker?

There is just something irrevocably great about those who make it possible for brilliant musicians to be heard. I revere people like Wilson for doing the (properly) indie label thing, because it involves an incredible amount of self-sacrifice, but if it works, gives rise to really exciting scenes. ie Wilson with Factory, Ian Mackaye with Dischord, Conor Oberst with Saddle Creek. etc etc.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

Or is this some kind of competition about who can die younger and more unexpectedly? Because Ian Curtis has Joe Strummer beat in that ridiculously morbid competition.

I suspect most people never though Shaun Ryder would live past his second album.

And he released a new one this year! Talk about an unexpected comeback.

This is a very good point.

Of course for a lot of people (those living in the ITV region formerly served by the Granada franchise) Tony Wilson was better known as a television personality first and foremost (he was a journalist by profession).  Indeed, even whilst Factory was at its height he was still presenting the regional news bulletins and was still a regular face on TV screens up there until his illness took hold.

One of a kind
