Belle and Sebastian
« on: 21 Aug 2007, 19:51 »

So, I have a friend who listens to mostly metal, and some dance. He wants to get into Belle and Sebastian, but so far doesn't like what he's heard. What would you recommend for him?

idk ive always thought that their best album has been "Dear Catastrophe Waitress"  Lord Anthony, Piazza New York, Wrapped up in books, and If she wants me

for a fan of faster pace stuff though id probably have to suggest their newest album We Are The Sleepyheads kind of has an Of Montreal feel to it

I'm a fan. Belle and Sebastian are very diverse so I rarely find anyone who likes all of it. Dear Catastrophe Waitress is certainly a good album. I like everything on it. I don't know what you've had your friend listen to, but if he didn't like it, it must not have been Your Cover's Blown. That song is too funk-ay for anyone not to like.

Their cover of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town"!

seriously though, B&S have a lot of distinct eras. Tigermilk, IYAFS and TBWTAS are mostly quiet and tweeish, FYHCYWLAP i forget, although it sounded a bit more "mature" and not very good. DCW was them going FUCK YEAH 60S POP AND SUNSHINE and The Life Pursuit was basically more of the same.. The singles are a whole different story though.

I haven't had him listen to anything by them, but he says he heard The Boy With The Arab Strap, and didn't like it.

if he didnt like that then there really is no use trying to force the enjoyment of music on someone or forcing music on yourself.

That made no sense. First you say to try some other albums, and then say that obviously if he didn't like TBWTAS than there is no way in hell he will like anything else.

Can I just ask why a dude that is mostly into metal suddenly wanted to get into Belle and Sebastian specifically? It seems really odd.

I always throw Tigermilk at people. Tigermilk is awesome.

I don't know. He is an odd kid. He listens to metal, dance, and Joanna Newsom. Maybe he is trying to impress me.

andlemonade (9:43:26 PM): This Belle and Sabastian cd is the shit as well. It's just so awesome. I feel great
guy (9:48:26 PM): okay I don't think I like B&S but tell me a good album anyway so maybe I'll change my mind
andlemonade (9:44:01 PM): I pretty much just wanna go lay on the floor with someone I really really like, and just stare at the ceiling and talk about shit while listening to it.
andlemonade (9:44:06 PM): The Boy With The Arab Strap
guy (9:48:54 PM): yeah that's a pretty great feeling.
guy (9:48:56 PM): ok I think I heard that one
andlemonade (9:44:48 PM): Hmm.

He is always up for new music, but as far as I know listens mostly to metal.

B&S are not a band for someone who listens mostly to metal.

E's guide is great except I like Fold Your Hands, Child so boo-urns to him. Uh, maybe try Dear Catastrophe Waitress or The Life Pursuit instead?

Don't forget Push Barman to Open Old Wounds, guys. I would consider at least the first half of that compilation to be essential listening for anybody expressing an interest in Belle & Sebastian.

Instead of answering that directly, I'm going to direct you to this and let you make up your own mind.

EDIT: and because now I see what you're getting at, it's not a compilation of album material but rather a 2-C.D. set that brings together half-a-dozen E.P.s, including the three classic E.P.s that the band produced in 1997.

Yeah Push Barman is great. It's worth it for "Judy Is A Dick Slap" alone.
