Lord Rocket:
OK.
Strictly speaking, if you follow the advice of the previous poster to go find Home of the Underdogs, you'll want to look up Abandonia as well. It's not quite ready to take HoTU's crown as 'premium abandonware site' as of yet, but unlike HoTU its still being updated, and the server is quite a lot faster.
If you do go down the abandonware route, and you use fancy-pants new Windows, you'll need to use DOSBox. Get one of those front ends there too, if you're frightened by CLIs. This latest version runs games from 1997 or older generally quite acceptably on my machine, which is an AMD64 3500, but has only 256 megs of RAM, which tends to make everything run slower than it should.
Anyway, as long as we're discussing old games, emulators are your friend. They exist for just about any system you can imagine, but whether they're strictly 'legal' is still up in the air. Most people seem to like the SNES and therefore ZSNES, but I'm not a big fan of console games, to be honest. Find your own ROM sites.
On to Windows games now. People mentioned NetHack before, but frankly you're better off with a newer, more streamlined Roguelike. My personal favourite is Ragnarok 2.5, because I like Vikings, and it has a cool crafting system (you'll probably need DOSBox though, since its pretty old). There's also ADOM which is popular and has a plot of some sort, but I don't believe its being worked on anymore. The leader of the new generation of Roguelikes is Incursion, however. Its based around D&Ds D20 system, but since you don't have to do all that pointless adding yourself, its actually fun. And oh boy is there ever a crapload to do. The interface could use some streamlining, but its not nearly as convoluted as NetHack (I'm never going to play NH on Windows ever again. I have a Linux version that has drop-down menus! So much better its ridiculous).
However, all those games are timekillers, so if you just want shits and giggles, IVAN (Iter Vehemens ad Necem, meaning 'the road to a violent death', which about sums it up) or the DoomRL are for you. IVAN has proper graphics if you're a wimp who likes that sort of thing. And also decapitations, and delimbenings. Shame its no longer being worked on really.
For those who require more complexity, there is Dwarf Fortress. Its completely mental, and any of you who haven't played it should do so right away. Its only nominally a Roguelike, though, since you'll be spending most of your time in the Fortress Mode, developing a glorious living space for your dwarfs. Its been called the future of games, and considering how much content has already gone into it, they may well be right.
On to graphical-type fun now. Have any of you heard of AGS? Its a tool for creating your own SCUMM-style adventure games, and it has a thriving community, so there's a buttload of games available. They're all stan-alone, and there's an awful lot to choose from. The 'picks of the month' section of that site will mostly steer you right. Other than that, its a bit hit-and-miss.
What else? Doom's source code was released onto the public domain some time ago, but the sprites and textures still remain the property of id, so its not strictly free. HOWEVER, there is Freedoom, which provides public domain sprites and levels for your Dooming convenience. It isn't done yet, and it mostly looks a bit naff, but the last release really addressed a few aesthetic issues (I love the new plasma gun), so when its done it should look great. You'll need an engine like ZDoom or EDGE or Eternity or PrBoom to play it though.
Fuck, I'm sick of writing this. There's a few more (I know a bit about free games since that's all I can afford to play) but at this point I'm just going to close by saying Nahlahk is free and Tom Proudfoot is awesome. Get the Natuk demo while you're there too.
PS. TIGSource is also a good source for games, both freeware and indie. They update regularly, so there's always something new to play. If you enjoyed any of those Roguelikes I was shitting on about just before, be sure to check out The Temple of the Roguelike as well.
clockworkjames:
Halp, I am addicted to gunz.
Engrish, spongey people, barrel rolls, talking smack, levels, XP, items to buy.
I think that about sums it up.
TheBoredOne:
Hah. I used to play Gunz. It is pretty addictive, despite only having two co-op levels to choose from.
Also you forgot "running up walls".
öde:
Thank you for a fantastic post, Lord Rocket.
Oh, and the Ragnarok download link you posted doesn't work, this one does: http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/ragnarok.htm
