I've tried so hard to like Bjork, but my ears always reject her sound within minutes of starting a song. What am i doing wrong?

You're listening with your ears, you have to listen with your heart.

Actually, yeah, her name is pronounced 'byerk', it's just typically mispronounced because of the way its spelled, though I think it's just basically accepted now that it's pronounced 'byork' because there's no sense in trying to change the way everyone pronounces it. And yeah, Bjork is basically awesome, easily my favorite female musical artist. And if you've listened to her and not liked her, don't feel bad, some of her stuff is hard to get into. Honestly, I never cared for her the first couple of times I listened to her, but then one night when it was really late and I was out driving around she was on and her style just connected with me. So far as I'm concerned, she makes great nocturnal music.

Surprisingly, out of all of the opportunities that I've had to listen to her stuff, I've always decided otherwise.
What I heard about her didn't appeal to me, and I've just never felt the need to really listen to anything she's done.
If someone wanted me to listen, I would, but my interest in her is so very small that I definitely won't make the initiative to listen to her on my own.

Tomorrow afternoon I might have to upload Vespertine. I post this so that I will feel obligated to upload it when tomorrow afternoon comes.

I'm not the biggest fan of her first two albums, but Homogenic rocks my socks.

That's... all I've heard of her. This should be remedied?

Volta isn't really bad so much as it is frustrating. I wish that most of the songs on it were a lot more coherent, but as it is they seem to have still been gestating when they were recorded.

if you want to know why people like bjork, listen to her good things. vespertine is the best bjork record all the way through (vespertine live has some versions that are better than album quality).

also, any bootlegs of shows she's done with brodsky quartet are fucking incredible.

i bought medulla, listened once all the way through, and never listened to it again.

d/l volta because i learned my lesson with the previous album. volta is not even listenable. i'm all for experimentation and tribal timbre, but COME ON! at least give me some kind of beat behind all the noise to make some sense of it. i listened all the way through once and i was gouging my ears. this is her worst record BY FAR. worst material she's ever put out.

Seriously?

I didnt have any gripes with volta. There are some songs that totally suck. Like the one thats like "Heres my version of it eternal whirlwind!" and then were she keeps on repeating a 5 verse poem with some guy. Also, declare indepence is good for the comedic value... Wow, this c.d is sounding worse and worse the more I list the bad songs... But wanderlust, earth intruders, and innocence are very good songs.

have you heard vespertine before? its experimental pop. so its quirky but makes total sense and is solid from opening to ending.

i dunno if my view is skewed because i've heard her at her peak and now she's moving further and further toward more obscure experimental styles or what. all i've got to say is compare these two albums. give them both a fair listen.

'Homogenic', or her remix album, 'Telegram'.

Post and Homogenic would be her most accessible albums by far. Homogenic probably more so. Debut is rougher, but right behind these two. I'm not sure if I understand people who can't like these albums. Vespertine is a good album, through and through. My favorite, probably. But it took a long time to get there. Both Medulla and Volta are really hit or miss. I think it's only been through a concerted effort that I've come close to appreciating songs like "Ancestors" and "Vertebrae by Vertebrae." However, most of the songs do grow on you if you let them.

Telegram has a few really good tracks - "Hyper-ballad" (really cool if not better than the original), "You've Been Flirting Again," "My Spine" - some OK tracks, and a couple WTF? tracks.

I think you really have to allow for her use of the English language if you're going to like her music. At times it can be awkward, but if you can accept her stylistic approach, the reward is worth your adjustment. My opinion, of course.
