Hellgate London

http://www.hellgatelondon.com/

Well, if you pre-order right now, you get into the beta (among other things).  It is a great game, so far.  Think Half-Life meets Diablo 2.

If you don't know about this game, read up!  It's definitely worth a play.

Releases: Oct, 31st

I'm definitely looking at it, and I think it will be a good one.  I might not get it for a while now, considering my laptop can't even run a game from '05 without major issues.

  It'll run with a Go 6150 swimmingly . . but it won't look good. :)

With my 8400m GS, I get 40ish frames per second with maxed out settings (minus AA and filtering) in DX9.

Word.

Looks interesting... The last thing I want to do is get addicted to another MMO, though... So, I'll see how casual it looks!

I will eventually get this game, being a big fan of older Blizzard products, and seeing as how this is really a Diablo III of sorts.  But I've never been the kind of guy who has to have it as soon as it's out or I'll shit my pants.  I'll wait for the first patch, wherein they fix most of the major bugs not revealed during the Beta.  The frustration of dealing with bugs, to me, does not outweigh the thrill of being amongst the first to play it.

I know, this will be a high-quality product, from the same ex-Blizzard team that brought you Diablo and Diablo II.  I'll still wait for the first patch.

I'm surely going to give this game a shot, I've watched most of the movies for it and it looks to be entertaining and keep the ADD at bay for a little bit.

The beta is highly entertaining. I'm so gonna recreate my Minion Necro and sit back and eat cheese while my minions cause massive havoc and destruction.

The Alpha and Beta servers seem to be a little... crappy to be honest, but it's alpha and beta. I forgive them.

Couple friends of mine have already entered the beta, but they complain endlessly about the bugs, lag, and the fact that they can't proceed ANY FURTHER in gameplay. I honestly don't know how a decent version will be released by the 31st. I'd hate to see this game go the way of Vanguard.

I haven't read too far into it (mostly because my computer can barely run Sam and Max), but I'm still too confused about thee free vs pay-to-play online models they have. If the single player campaign is good, I'll consider getting it on the wife's computer.

Well, it's already gone gold, so if they didn't fix them already then it's too late until the first patch is out.

It's been stated quite a bit on the forums by FSS staff that the beta testers were / are given a 3-4 week old version of the testing that the internal testers are given to find things that the internal testers missed.  Also, the single player game was being fixed first (as that had to be ready when the game went gold, while online only fixes can be patched at launch).  Oh, and it's going to be awesome.

People talk a lot about bugs and instability, but in all honesty I've had nothing but a wonderful experience.  The only problem I've ever experienced was their lack of a /stuck (or /unstuck) sort of function.

It might be that I'm only level 12, but I've been to quite a few different zones and they seem pretty stable.

I'm fairly sure I'll be subscribing per month, but I don't think I'll take them up on the Founders offer ($150 for a lifelong subscription).

Wait until you get to act 5.  If all the acts were as good as act 5, the game would be named Game of the Millenium.  Seriously . . .  Why they didn't make the earlier acts better to entice players to play the game is beyond me.

Also, while I loooove the game, the demo is a HORRIBLE representation of the game.  They definitely failed in that.

I would absolutely agree about the demo.  It was far too short, and they should have at least let you get some of the other level 5 skills.  Not to mention the lack of quest situation you end up in; how hard would it really have been to throw in a "thanks for playing the demo!" message, and just let people explore after that?

The only real bitch I have about the game is that they absolutely refuse to put in a method of respeccing. It's the one thing keeping me from ever playing around and experimenting in games like Diablo 2. I refuse to put that much time into a character only to find out that the skill I was working towards is complete shit, or worse, having it nerfed to hell in a patch.

I still love the shit out of this game.

I just caved in and pre-ordered the game, but I doubt I'll be playing for long- probably just to tide me over until Warhammer Online comes out :P (don't hit meee!).

I don't know how I feel about the instancing just yet, but Hellgate is most definetely not your traditional MMO- it's apparently rare to be in a party, and even then, there are graphical glitches which keep you from viewing your partners (HARHAR). <--- this might have been fixed by the time of this post.

On the other hand, I LOVE the Hellgate London cinematic trailers (glorified the Templars). I watched a few of them last night on Stage6 and was hella impressed- if they can expand the storyline to a comic, they can do a full-length film.

PS: The way people are frantically scrambling to get all the pre-order dye kits is HILARIOUS.

PPS: Anyone know if there will be a wipe on beta before the day of release? Also, post all your in-game names if you're ever interested in getting together.

I'm happy as hell about the intancing myself, nothing sucks like grouping for a quest only to have to wait for a respawn and then have the kill stolen by another asshat in the area.

A lot of the glitches in the Beta have been fixed in the Test servers, and I'm sure the retail will have a ton more fixes since their 3 or 4 weeks behind the actual retail release.

Well, the retail release in on Halloween, and will have what they're referring to as "Patch 0."  The official beta test ended Friday (full wipe of everything), but I think the European one is going on until tonight or tomorrow still.  However, they're opening the servers up for anyone in the beta sometime next week just before (or at) release, so folks waiting on their shipped copy can get playing.  Characters made then will transfer, which is pretty neat.

I've tried every class but summoner at least a little (had a 14 Engineer, 6 Guardian, 9 Evoker before beta ended), and I suspect I'll be going Engineer and Evoker most of the time.  I also really enjoy the instancing, and the partying seemed pretty cool when I tried it.

The first reviews are out and they are looking good. PCGamer gave it a score just shy of an editor's choice award, citing minor technical problems and repetitive tiles as really the only negative aspects. Otherwise they lauded the hyper addictive gameplay and said it was a blast to play. Now I just have to find out if my laptop will run it and, if not, I can fix my pc. Damn computers always have to have problems at the worst times! I've seriously been waiting for this since it was announced a couple of years ago so I cannot wait to actually play it (I beat Diablo II again in Hell difficulty to celebrate to closeness of its release).

I think it's a great game.  Comparing it to Diablo 2 in it's state now -- I'd say Diablo 2 is a hell of a lot better . . but then again, that's a few years of patches and a HUGE expansion.  As a release with zero added content so far -- it's a great game.  I'm hoping for the best!

Nanimar, 16 Engineer
Estacado, 2 Blademaster
Bruttenholm, 1 Evoker

The two low-levels I just have to reserve their names.  Buddy me if you like, and if anybody wants to party sometime that'd be cool.

That was true of D2 as well. Act 5 was as good as the rest of the game put together.

Soo many bugs!  Not that they're not being resolved (patch this week).  It just sucks that they released the game about a month too early.

If anyone is interested in this game, just a forewarning:  Don't buy it expecting polish.  Wait until late December.

That being said, the game's great fun, even with the bugs.

The only major bugs that I think need to be addressed so far are quest rewards "choose for me" buttons being broken, the nanoforge being broken, and uniques being broken.  All the others pale in comparison to those.

I can't wait until they get the bugs out and start adding neat features, like a 'destroy' or 'breakdown' hotkey, or the ability to split stacks without a recipe.  Things like that would be nice.

I finally hit Act 5, and am going back to complete all the quests I can before I finish normal and move on to Nightmare.  I hear the grinding is ridiculous in NM so I'm waiting to see if maybe they'll tone it down a bit in a patch.

I have to disagree with that. Act 5 did have some cool innovations in what the Blizz guys did with the D2 stuff, but it also smacked of laziness and lack of QC. The Quest triggers were screwed, for one thing. Larzuk never says his Intro speech, which even includes a different speech upon meeting an Amazon. Instead he hits you right away with "If you're here to defaat Baal..." which is his Quest speech. If you want to hear his Intro speech, you have to choose Talk and select it. If it's meant to be brusque and intimidating (which would be in character for a Barbarian), why does he have such a nice, friendly voice? Similar thing happens with Qual-Khek. Once you've stopped the siege, the next thing on his priority list is rescuing the 15 losers who managed to get themselves captured out there. But again, he never gets to give that speech, because as soon as you head up the stairs behind Shenk, the Quest triggers. Plus you can get killed before even reaching the Waypoint. Nice. Have to do that shit all over again.

There's that spot in Malah's place where her head disappears but you see her feet as she walks around.

Originally, there was no variety in the monsters you faced in Act V. Why? Because they didn't bother to come up with enough new ones to provide a pool to choose from, as with the first four Acts. That's why they came up with the idea of "guest monsters" with patch 1.10.

There are maps in the Ice Caves (can't remember which area specifically - and they're all the same anyway) which don't generate a Waypoint, because of a bug in the mapping algorithm as applied to the specific area.

The Ancients have a great speech (too long, but kinda cool) which they don't give most of the time, for some reason. Another bug.

Yes, these are all nitpicky things, but taken all together, and the fact that Blizz hasn't bothered to patch most of them, give the impression that you're playing something that the creators just didn't pay much attention to. Getting all that cool new stuff to work was important, yes, but shouldn't be at the expense of annoying little things you have to face every time you play. Blizz has a reputation for some quality stuff, but IMO they fumbled with D2 Act V.

Patches are for all users, period.  Any subscriber-only features will be mentioned in the notes.

However, they are giving all users 24 char slots.  As a subscriber, fuck that.  I mean I could see 4 or even 8, but giving them the huge 24 slots like we have?  Grarrr.
