"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by The Beatles from "Abbey Road"

Wow, I really copped a lot of crap for this.

For the record, I feel like it drags on for longer than it should, doesn't really go anywhere and just feel completely without energy or impact on any level.

IMO

IMO

But then, I love Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds so maybe I'm just a big stupid-head.

"Proposition 61" on the Most Serene Republic's Underwater Cinematographer. It's dreary and sticks out sandwiched in the middle of an intensely optimistic album.

The funny thing is, that's my favorite song off the whole album. I guess to actually contribute I'll throw another song out there. Let me preface this by saying I still like this song quite a bit, it just happens to be my least favorite on the album: Neighborhood #4 (Kettles) from 'Funeral'.

I think you'll find that by common opinion, it's both of us that are stupid heads. Whoever it was earlier in the thread is the only other person I've met that doesn't consider that song a psychedelic masterpiece.

Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is a piece of shit.

Strawberry Fields Forever is a much better, more lushly arranged, vividly psychedelic song

Strawberry Fields is a better song than Lucy, but that doesn't make Lucy a pile of poops.

I actually nearly wrote "I Want To Tell You" because I completely forgot about "Here, There and Everywhere".  That's how forgettable it is I guess?

Here, There, and Everywhere is exemplary of cheese.

Gouda, Limburger, maybe Cheddar, but the cheddar would have to be really sharp.

The worst track on Revolver is Doctor Robert in my view.

I think the music is more important than the words on that song.

I think Lennon's intention was quite the opposite.

I doubt that!

I've read in at least two fairly reputable books that Lennon was trying to use fewer and fewer lyrics in his songs by the late sixties, and that eventually - like Yoko Ono did with a poem in 1964 - he wanted to write a song that was simply perfection, using only one word.

'I Want You (She's so heavy)' is maaaaybe the best song on the best Beatles album, and why bother arguing which is more psychedelic, 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' (which is kinda shitty although I really like Paul's backing vocals) or Strawberry Fields (which is really good), when a song as excellent as 'Tomorrow Never Knows' exists?

I don't like 'Crescendolls' off Daft Punk's Discovery, there is just something about it that runs me the wrong way.

I don't like 'The Boy Done Wrong Again' off Belle and Sebastian's If You Are Feeling Sinister, it is just boring.

Although i wouldn't say I dislike it, 'The Model' s my least favourite track off Kraftwerk's The Man Machine.

I really dislike 'Shellshock' off New Order's Substance, although it probably doesn't count because it is a compilation of 12"s

I don't like 'Everybody Hurts' on  R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People. It is just sappy and not up to scratch in an album that good.

(Nice Dream), Fitter Happier, Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors, We Suck Young Blood

Where are you getting your crack from now?

Please defend it.  Are the lyrics good or something?  The song is like something a fifteen-year-old Bad Religion and Rage Against the Machine fan would write.

Not so fond of "Thunderbird" and "World Before Later On" from TMBG's The Spine
Also not big on Hovering Sombrero from Mink Car, but I kinda' like it.
Not big on two songs from Carbon Leaf (PLAYING THIS SATURDAY AT LAKE MATOAKA AMPHITHEATER WOO!) on the album "Love Loss Hope Repeat": A Girl and Her Horse (reminds me of the saddle club a little bit too much) and Texas Stars -- which would be great if it was just a little less repetitive.

THANK YOU. I hate that track, but all of my friends scoff at me when I pass over it. I cant stand the constant repeating of the title lyric.

Also, though its an okay song by itself, 'Closedown' off of Disintegration just isnt good enough to be on that album. It doesnt fit.

That's most Fugazi songs for you.

that's not right at all.  not remotely

while Fugazi is pretty accessible as far as indie bands go, most of their material is pretty original-sounding.

there are only a few times I can actually say that their music sounds like one of their influences, that is to say sometimes Gang of Four or Mission of Burma shine through just a bit

Pity For the Pious on World War III by KMFDM annoys me a fair bit. I tend to skip it.

Also, I'm not too much of a fan of some of the segues on Outside by Bowie. Sure, they're part of the whole concept album thing, but they get a bit annoying sometimes.

The worst track on Revolver is Doctor Robert in my view.

Woah I think either Emilio completely missed this, or he is some kind of saint with infinite patience.

Yellow Subarmine

I have never understood what anyone can possibly see in that song. I'd find it more forgivable if it fitted in on the record, which people may disagree about, but I don't think it does. On the White Album, maybe.

The best I can explain it is, listen to it on a pair of headphones. Now, walk around in a public place. At the 1.50 mark, start singing along, but only to the background call and repeat parts, in the same ridiculous voice.

When you get to the "AH-HAH" just do it at the top of your damn lungs and maybe jump in the air and spin around 360 degrees or something.

That is what I enjoy the most about this song.

.
..
...

OK, back on topic. I think "I'm pretty sure I can see Molecules" on Troubled Hubble's Making Beds in a Burning House Album, its just not very interesting and the lyrics are terrible and even the actual name of the song is terrible!

Also I think the Shankhill Butchers on The Crane Wife, by the Decemberists really slows down that album at the point where it seems like it is just picking up heaps of momentum and just kills it again.

Most Belle and Sebastian albums have one song I don't like.

"Dress Up In You"
"Asleep on a Sunbeam"
"The Boy Done Wrong Again"
"Mary Jo"

....I have four albums by them, so yeah. One song per album.

Anna Maria on any BOA album, i swear just makes my head hurt every time (Please God, let someone know who in thell i'm talkin about)

blue train by cibo matto, tho now i won't make my way over to my comp just to skip it, but i still don't like it

i am the walrus. i said it. it was a stupid song that made specifically to mean nothing at all and yet it's become this ridiculous debate about how the wlarus represents God and i'm all like "WHAT!?!?! That song meant nothing! It wasn't supposed to!" Yet is became really popular.

I think the music is more important than the words on that song.
IMO there is never a point where the "music is more important than the words" outside of electronic and remix and electro. The point of a song with words is to convey a feeling of tell a story. "Everyday is exactly the same" can be heard without words and convey a melancholy, but without the words u could easily feel just a calmness from the music.
just my opinion. I don't wanna argue on it, but I just think if a songs lyrics are dumb then the song isn't worth hearing. There was one on the radio i wish i could remember, the music is great, but i looked up the lyrics and decided it was the dumbest song i've EVER heard.

That song pisses me off for a more specific reason, in that the subject matter is very sensitive and extremely politically potent, but Meloy strips it of ALL that to make some retarded coy nursery rhyme out of murders from a period of Northern Ireland's history that is still fresh in people's minds (that has shaped the following generation(s), ie. me).

It's arbitrary, exploitative and lazy.

I'm really not a fan of New Thrash or Live at E's, while I absolutely love every other track of 40 oz. to Freedom.
Fashion Victim is good, but definitely not on par with the rest of Warning.
It'll Be A Long Time is probably the weakest (still good) song on Smash.

You people like shit like Radiohead and Deerhoof and you dare to moan about Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and Yellow Submarine?

I literally cannot get my head around other peoples musical taste.

My nominations for worst songs off of favourite albums, hmmmn... I suppose the obvious one is 'Twilight Twilight Nihil Nihil' off of Current 93's 'All the Pretty Little Horses'. It's far too long, not particularly inventive and simply doesn't fit in with the album at all (it would be more at home on some of C93's 80's material). That said, the version on Cats Drunk On Copper, where Dave got Michael Cashmore and Johnny Balance reading the lyrics with him in a round, and backed it up with the 'Long Shadows' loop, is fucking brilliance, so it's a good thing it exists. Still, it dethrones what would be C93's best album to only their third best (after 'Thunder Perfect Mind' and 'Soft Black Stars'). I can't think of any other particularly gratuitous offenders...maybe 'Science Never Sleeps' from Skyclad's 'Irrational Anthems', but the second half of that album is a bit weak compared to the first half anyway...more concrete Skyclad example might be 'Gammadion Seed' from Prince of the Poverty line, but the thing is, that is actually a pretty good song, just not quite as good as the rest of the album, whereas Science Never Sleeps is one of the very few Skyclad songs that I could do without. Along the line of good songs that aren't quite as good as the rest of the album, what about 'Lifebooks' from Death in Junes 'Rose Clouds of Holocaust', or 'Exile (Les Litanies De Satan)' from Ancient Rites' 'Dim Carcosa'. Both of those are good songs, but they ain't maybe quite good enough. Then again I feel this is more for tracks which are kind of crap on otherwise good or great albums, not for merely good songs on great albums.

ignoring the terrible grammar in that quote, amen!

Regardless of what I think of the other man's opinions on songs, even if they're shooting down my favorite song, I am not just gonna come out and respond with the blanket statement, 'how could you possibly enjoy that load of bull?'  it's just not polite.

I could see someone defending their musical tastes with an actual rebuttal, but the truth is, this world is filled with different people with different tastes, and while being PC is one thing that really bugs me sometime, there are boundaries that just go with common courtesy.

*steps off of soapbox*

I also dislike The Shankill Butchers when put in comparison to the rest of that album, however, I had no idea that it was based on true events, or that those events were recent.  Hm.  learn something new everyday I suppose.   :-)

"Teclo" from PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love.

That's one of my most favorite CDs of all time, but I just do not like that song.

Also I think the Shankhill Butchers on The Crane Wife, by the Decemberists really slows down that album at the point where it seems like it is just picking up heaps of momentum and just kills it again.

Yeah but that's what nursery rhymes are and he succeeds in doing that.  I agree that it does slow the album down. How about taking it out and placing Culling of the Fold in there. Or just go straight into Summersong.

Do you mean that you think he was aware of what he was doing by using the form of nursery rhyme to approach the subject? Would you say there is an intentional irony to it that I am missing out on?

If not, I'd say the "yeah but it is what it is, and because it's that, it's okay" defense is unsuccesful.

Then you wouldn't like Irish traditional songs.

THEY'RE ALL ABOUT THE IRA KICKING THE BRITSES' ASS.

Are they?

I saw a guy in the photo thread on this board wearing a "Stereotype me, I'm Irish" t-shirt. I wants it. I'm also hoping to avoid mentioning where I'm from in other threads in case people begin thinking of me as "the whinging Irish twat."

ANYWAY

On topic, I was thinking about two albums. First, No Heroes by Converge. What a ferocious and energetic and rhythmically dazzling album, eh.... apart from the poorest attempt at an angst filled sludge epic I have ever heard. "Grim Heart/Black Rose" is a 9 minute smear of shit across the face of that album and it renders it barely listenable in one sitting, I find.

On a less extreme note, "God Is In the House", from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' No More Shall We Part. I like the concept, and lyrically I like the execution, but the melody is boring and Cave's "character" that he uses is irritating and silly. Maybe. Still, I don't mind it, I just fucking adore the rest of the album.

Yeah I do think that. Though I fully understand the originally context and what Murphy & his gang did. As with most nursery ryhmes the horrors are quickly subjugated by quaintness. One possible point is that he might have wanted to show the way that nursery rhymes deal with violence and death.

I Think I should start a nursery rhyme thread.

Well, the more recent ones anyways. "Come out you Black and Tans" or "Sean South of Garryowen," for example. Maybe that's just coming from Cavan though...
