Singers! Tell me your secrets...
« on: 19 Oct 2007, 17:13 »

Basically, I'm curious as to what the tricks are of any of the vocalists on the forum to stop your throat drying out, warming up and cooling down your vocal chords, and how to get over a sore throat quickly.

Any hints, cheats, tips and the like that anyone can share? I know different people deal with their voices differently, but I'm curious as to how you guys get yourselves ready for shows and recording sessions and the like.

I"m not much of a singer, so I don't know.  But I just drink lots of water before and after singing.

For whatever reason, I nap before I sing. Every time. I'm not sure if it improves my vocal quality or if it's just a ritual, but there you go.

Breathe. Have water nearby. Develop a measure of control over your voice.

If you're trying to hold a note for longer, don't force all the air out of your lungs to do it. It'll make you go sharp and it won't hold the note. Control the breathing. Let it out slowly, control it.

Practice singing lying on your back with a book on your stomach. It helps teach you to sing from your diaphragm and to control it.

Don't eat or drink dairy in the 12-24 hours leading up to a gig. It'll coat your throat and has a considerable effect.

PUSH FROM THE GUT!!!

Actually, don't push from anywhere. Never push, that will ruin your voice, and you sound shitty while you're doing it.

The number one thing that anybody needs to do when they're singing or playing an instrument is breathing correctly. Before you start warming up your vocal chords, do some breathing exercises. In for four beats, out on a lip flutter, hiss, or later a note for eight, twelve, sixteen, twenty beats and then as long as you can sustain a good flow for. If you're not lightheaded, you're not doing it right. Make sure that when you're breathing, you're doing it into the stomach, and not into the chest. Picture the air flowing down and out in your stomach. Don't be modest about showing any kind of "gut" when singing, it means you're breathing and using enough air.

Also, you need to eliminate tension, especially in the upper body. A lot of people carry their tension in the shoulders and neck. If you can, give yourself a little massage (or find somebody else to give it). Lower your shoulders, bend your knees, don't stretch out your neck, keep your chin down (but don't sing to the floor).

One last note, with any shaping or articulation that you are singing, exaggerate it. It is much easier to pull back on these things than it is to add them.

I've heard that caffeine before a public speaking or singing event isn't a good idea because it tends to make your vocal cords much tighter than they would otherwise be.

Fantastic. The vodka thing definitely helped but I'm now too sleepy to record, so that also sucks.

Basically, I've been living off throat losenges the past two days trying to get rid of a sore throat so I can record a demo tomorrow, and then go to an audition on Tuesday night. I might just have to stop talking entirely for a few hours and drink a few buckets of water, then maybe swallow some honey to coat my throat for a while so I can get some decent sound out.

Also, I know the dairy thing makes you a bit phlegmy, but after I had my cereal this morning I felt a lot better because my throat was coated with something, and I sounded a lot better than I had done, and did for the rest of the day. What would be worse, sounding a little bunged up or sounding really scratchy and squeaky?

In terms of maintenance: Hot things. Tea. Scarves.

Warming up: five-note scales up and down, arpeggios, vowel stuff. Just humming helps a lot too, hum up and down all your registers. Vocal sirens.

Cooling down: after singing really intensely sing a familiar easy song before you leave off. Also, tea. Throat Coat's the best for healing itchy voices.

Obviously try and stay away from dairy before singing.

Keep your throat very open. If you feel yourself getting tight, stop and swallow. Your swallowing muscles are what are tightening; get those out of the way.

Try and keep your soft tissue--tongue, lips, cheeks--out of the way of your sound, keeping a nice open space. Soft tissue absorbs sound.

Breathe deeply, dropping your air into your gut. Try not to move your shoulders when you breathe--that means you're filling up at the top of your torso with shallow breaths.

Warm up physically before you sing. Run in place, get a little winded.

Something I learned from a Thom Yorke interview also is to keep your face loose. If you keep your face and lips tight, it constrains your movement and the vocal has to be harder to escape. Keep it loose and the vocal is free to move. That might not make much sense - it's difficult to describe, but it's helped me a lot. It can lead to a few mic pops, but once you control your breathing better it's less of an issue.

PUSH FROM THE GUT!!!

Actually, don't push from anywhere. Never push, that will ruin your voice, and you sound shitty while you're doing it.

Okay, push is admittedly a bit extreme, but I'm an extreme kind of guy, and have had to do singing where I was at a near-shouting level before.

Why the fuck not?

Not because there's anything wrong with Tom Waints, but because the only way to successfully sing like Tom Waits is to be Tom Waits.

I guess you mean breathe from the gut then. Abdominal breathing is a very good thing.

I'm not going to repeat what everyone has been saying, though (most) of them are good tips (not the alcohol/cigarettes stuff), but if your throat hurts these could make it better/go away: - try not to talk too much, as that just irritates your vocal chords more, so talk less or quieter until it feels better, - water! tea! good stuff!, - there's this process, I forget what it's called, where you pour some water through one nostril and you let it drain out your mouth and you do it for each nostril. I don't remember what it's called, but my voice teachers always recommended it if your throat and sinuses were icky.

But yeah, don't drink any milk or eat too much dairy, do good warm ups that use your whole range, and do some breathing exercises. And when you resonate, imagine you're resonating through your forehead - I don't remember why that was important, but for some reason it does help you sound better.

Yeah, I think that's probably a better way of expressing it.

Also, whispering is not recommended; talk quietly, maybe near the top of your range when you need to save your voice.

and even if you are naturally talented, you still have to take care of your throat to get good mileage out of it.

advice: lots of Tea.
if all you have is water, make sure its room temperature. if it isn't, hold it in your mouth until it is.

Though for singing more so than a lot of other things, talent definitely counts for a lot.
For example, I'm an okay singer, but I don't think I could ever become a major solo artist regardless of training. Part of this has to do with my range, part with a less-than-perfect ear as well.

i have a remedy for a sore throat that might sound a little strange, but hear me out.  i learned this while traveling with a choir where we sang A LOT every day and our voices got really tired:

get a packet or two of JELL-O (gelatin, not pudding) and prepare it and put it in the fridge.  don't let it gelatinize all the way... just enough to be kind of slushy and drinkable.  drink this before you go to bed.  you're gonna have to time the preperation right and keep a watchful eye on it so it doesn't get too hard (or be too watery) before you're ready to sleep.  don't drink anything else afterwards, and try not to swallow too much (heh heh... that's what she said).  the liquid will coat your vocal chords (actually, they're folds, and not chords, but vocal folds sounds too strange to me) and allow them to heal better.  it's not a magic cure, and won't make you totally better right away, but it helps.  there is no substitute for good, old fashioned rest, and lots of vitamin C.  also tea as others have said.

Uh, you know there are ways and means to expand both your range and your power. As for your ear, that can be trained as well. People with perfect ears go insane, because nothing EVER sounds in tune to them.

i don't know if vocals chords are a muscle so this may or may not be relevent but two seperate groups of scientists somewhere just came to the same conclusion that chocolate milk is the best thing to drink for muscle recovery (say, after working out).

i'm not really sure how this applies to the throat since the drink is actually passing through the area you want to recover so it might affect it differently.
