Make up some band names PLZKTHX
« on: 25 Oct 2007, 14:57 »

Hey, I did a bit of posting here a long time ago, and none of you probably remember me, but I posted a thread for people to make up band names. I searched and found no such thread anymore, so I'm doing it again, if that's okay. The rules: Don't steal band names from anybody who posts in this thread. Ask for permission and give credit if permission is granted. Oh, and point it out nicely if a name that somebody posts is already in use. Happy posting!

Oh, and if a name has an interesting story behind it, do tell.

My name ideas:

Red 40
Knock Off Clock
The Sleep Doctors
Brain Bucket
The Spectacular
King Jet
AyeHarTenWhy
Mr. Candidate and the Party Line

I could go on like this for hours but then I kinda ran out of ideas.

Basically any character from the Section 8 comic series would make a good band name.

That said, Dogwelder (combats evil by welding puppies to villains' faces) is already taken by my band.

Spastic Cheese Monkeys (It's in another thread but I don't want to check who came up with it right now)
Hedjklipper (with metal umlaut on the i, based on an XKCD comic)
Orange Sex (something provided by someone on the XKCD fora)
Death by Ice Cream (I always associate ice cream with good things that don't last forever, and death with a polar opposite relating to the end of happiness)
Blissful Suicide (Oh come on now, oxymorons are ALWAYS in style)
Bodywash (This name for some reason makes me think of Death Cab's Plans, and you all notwithstanding I like that they at least have mature and interesting rather than cheesy and sappy lyrics)
Line X (Line In, Line Out, and of course, X is just an awesome letter)

Too many bands these days lift their names from other bands' songs. Pretty Girls Make Graves and Stars of Track and Field, anyone?

Actually, I shouldn't say anything about that... my last attmepted band was called In Between Days.  :|

Ok, I am assuming that is a song title, but no one ever name your band that.

Because of this:

Though I guess maybe you could be in a riotgrrl band or something, in which case it would be an awesome allusion

Even if I wanted to, I don't think I could read all those. Too...many...words.
My made up band names are:

Tin Parliament (This was a phrase in a Neal Stephenson book that I though sounded really cool).

...and then Prague's Lights (A modified version of trail of the dead that I personally like better although I forget how I came up with it).

The Isosceles Umbrella Parade (Just b/c it's awesome).

Eskimo Eskimo (No story behind this either).

Inuit (If I had an ambient solo project that's more official than what I do now, I would call it this or the next two below this)
Nunatak (a Nunatak is the tip of a mountain protruding above the ice that ensconces the rest of the mountain. It's all glacial and what not)
Canons/Knives (There's a Sparrows Swarm and Sing song called 'Across Canyons/Canons/' This is that but modified.)

My friend was eating a lamb burger yesterday and she said something about her burger not having real Tabouli on it, at which point I said "So it's pseudo-tabouli....I'd go see a band called Pseudo-Tabouli".

If I ever start a band I'm naming it that, but I welcome people to take it because it's VERY unlikely that I'll ever be in a band.

Tyrannasaurus Flex (because it sounds tough. duh)

Velocirappers (white rap crew anyone?)

Zombie Jesus and the Orbiting Diety (originally thought of because of an Iron & Wine lyric)

Dave's Soap Box ( i actually found a wooden box in my parents old house that has this written in huge letters on the bottom. i dont know where it came from, or who dave is.)

The Truth About Bears (from my original perception of the "truth about bearded women" thread in movies/tv/books)

Can Eat More (robo-Lucy Liu from Futurama)

edit: i'm calling The Truth About Bears because some friends and I are going to start recording some jams next week and I'm gonna pitch that name to them and see how they like it.

When I was looking for band names a while back for a band I was starting with some friends, I found two specific categories that are quite useful for this sort of thing.

Names of Airplanes:
Brewster Buffalo
The Stinson Reliant (I call dibs on this one)
There were some more, but I can't find the list now.

Boxing Weight Classes (or at least just the ones that haven't already been taken):
Bantamweight (my favorite one, I also call dibs on this)
Minimumweight
Strawweight

Bantamweight is a great word.

My personal favourite semi-unclaimed band name is 'Oscillating Badger Parade'. Mate of mine in a college band pitched it to the singer from Feeder at a signing and has an open invitation to tour with them anytime if he turns up with a band called Oscillating Badger Parade.

Aeëtes (since I'm sure Jason and the Argonauts has been played out already somewhere else EDIT:Maybe not, but it WAS an XTC song)

Counterfeit Machinery (different from machinery that counterfeits)

Late Night at the Laundromat (c'mon, it's catchy)

Change Massage (apparently this is often done in some parts of China.

Organ Grinders (meat processing jokes anybody?)

In my early teens, I wanted to name my band 'Authorized Personnel'. My logic was you could get into ANYWHERE. I figured you could just open a door and be like "We're cool man, we're Authorized Personnel."

I always had this idea to have a group release albums all with the same title, but each time as a "different" band.

And I always thought along with this that my albums would be called Fire in the Hole.

I was going to suggest Plaid Hats (yeah, OK, whatever). Then, I thought, 'what? why not The Plaid Hats? what's up with people eschewing the definite article...other than that it adds another agonizing decision to organizing mp3 files.' And then, I had a breakthrough. The Definite Article. We could bring grammar rock back.

...And screw this guy.

I always thought that the real-world island chain St. Vincent & The Grenadines had a great punk band name.

My first band was almost called that!

At the local hospital there is a sign which reads "Chest Pain Unit". I have no idea what exactly that means, but it would make for a damn good name for a -core band.

I am pretty sure Khar just looked around his room

Everything on that list is like a comic book or something

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

The Repeated Redundancies, while we're in a grammatical mode?

The List Threads? No, it doesn't really work.

Black Bear at Night (Maybe this is cause there was a "progressive eatery" in Morgantown with the name Black Bear that this occurs to me, also Calvin and Hobbes)

DAEMON SEED LEECH (A metal band that for some reason gives Google results that all point to Torrent sites)

The Lazy Beavers (Make up your own reason for why this would(n't) work.)

My guess would be it's a section of the hospital devoted to people with pain in their chests. Seems pretty silly for that symptom to have its own unit though.

Well i guessed that much. But I have no idea what they actually do there. Also you have to keep in mind that this is a german hospital, which makes the English sign more confusing.
