I have these things I call "Shames": songs/bands I haven't heard that "everyone should have heard", movies that "everyone should see", and books "everyone should read". In short, basically a list of "classics/greats" that I haven't actually gotten too yet. I blame the music "Shames" on not listening to the radio; the book shames on a lack of money and the presence of a shitty public library; and the movie shames on a lack of money.
Anyway, I wanted to hear people's music shames. Now, I'm expecting to hear a lot of Indie stuff I guess--maybe you guys are so into music that it would be like "well, I haven't heard the unreleased bootleg demo track by Beck, which was the first thing he ever did" or whatever. If that's true, then you guys really have no music shames unless you hang out with elitists or something. ^_^

Anyway, here are some of mine:

1. Up until the Sunday before last, I had never heard "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

2. Counting that song, I have heard probably 2 or 3 songs by the Rolling Stones

3. I have never heard anything by The Who (except "My Generation")

4. I have heard maybe 4 songs by the Eagles--until about a week ago, I had heard zero.

5. Never heard anything by U2.

6. Never heard anything by Bob Dylan except covers of two of his songs

There are way more, but I'm too tired to think of them now.

What are some of yours (if any?)

Recommended albums: If you like this start with This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About and The Lonesome Crowded West. If you prefer this start with Good News For People Who Love Bad News and The Moon And Antarctica.

There are plenty of 'classics' or 'required -' that I haven't looked into. This is because I am lazy and don't particularly care.

I feel I should listen to more of the following bands. They are bands that I like and have heard some things by but due to a lack of money and a lack of interest in buying cds it is hard to work up the momentum to go into a record store and come out with something.

- Emperor; I only have Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk and I need to hear more.

- Nightwish; I'm going to their concert in February and while I know that they don't sound like they used to, I would like to hear more of their older stuff which I like infinitely more than their new stuff.

- Nine Inch Nails; I have a couple of the newer albums and a few of the older ones but as yet I do not have a complete copy of The Downward Spiral or Further Down the Spiral

These are things I feel very strongly about.

Although if you have serial insomnia it might just be worth downloading a worst-of of their least offensive songs. Most of them are too irritating to bore you into unconsciousness though.

Only heard, let's see... three AC/DC songs, I think. And even then not in entirety.

Never heard any Van Halen, Johnny Cash (nothing complete anyway), Van Morrison, The Doors, The Grateful Dead.

(And I only included U2 and the Eagles because I knew that I had worse, but couldn't think of any.)

Van Morrison

Some stuff he does is really good. A concert that he did in San Fransisco is worth checking out if you're kinda into Blues/Jazz/Funk stuff.
I mean, this is the guy who brought us songs like "Have I Told You Lately" but in the presence of songs like covering "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" it can probably be forgiven. That said, I think that I prefer him when he's doing the more up-tempo bluesy Jazz/rock to the pure blues stuff he sometimes does. I wouldn't recommend most other albums to people who aren't fond of slow, very introspective music since eventually most albums particularly ones from a period during the 80s and 90s delve into songs with a very formulaic easy listening style, starting out with a cymbal splash, moving into a simple piano riff of sorts, and then eventually going into him devolving into muttering almost incoherently while he tries to play the same notes he sings on the guitar. Not very interesting overall. That said, there are some good things hidden away even on these albums, though not everyones' cup of tea and a lot does feel like overly santized jazz stuff. The concert doesn't have that feel, thank goodness.

Also, I have two albums by U2, an 18 Singles CD and Rattle and Hum. A fair amount of what can be said about Van Morrison applies to U2, and this attempt at having a more "Black-Americana" sound is fine by me, just like with the Van Morrison CD. I wouldn't recommend it to people that can't stand hearing even a short snippet of a random U2 song though anyone else might get some enjoyment out of it partly because it's not your average U2.

I honestly hate almost all classic rock. Give me a long list of bands from the 60's and 70's, and I will only be able to pick out maybe a small handful of bands that I like.

For The Doors, I recommend "The End." Listen to it once and you will never want to listen to anything by The Doors again.

It actually has a fair number of my favourite Doors songs.  "Indian Summer," "Roadhouse Blues," "You Make Me Real," "The Spy."  Definitely their most underrated album.  I'd say The Doors is only marginally better.

Well, I'm not very fond of the Rolling Stones or the Greatful Dead most of the time. And I know a couple bands with members the age of the Rolling Stones guys who could totally kick their asses in terms of the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Beatles I like SOME stuff of. I like the whole rock sound type of thing that they did (OH HOW COULD I DANCE WITH ANOTHER

WHEN I SAW HER STANDING THERE) enough, but I didn't like some of their acid-trip experimental stuff. And John Lennon's idealism kinda' grates on me.

But my major music shame is that I have heard music from ABBA.

I can't be alone in thinking that Morrison Hotel is a pretty unremarkable album?  It's not really Doorsy enough; there's not much of a weird/dark underbelly.  I mean I rate it above The Soft Parade, but hey at least they tried something a bit different on that one.

Strange Days, LA Woman and The Doors are where it is at.  Strange Days is probably the best.  Except for "Horse Latitudes".  More like "Skip Skipitudes" amiritelol.  Even American Prayer, in its entirety, is less laughable and more listenable than that track.  But it is totally made up for by every single other song on the album.

BUT, I would say it's probably just best to listen to every doors album ever because they all tend to have quite a few very good songs, which seems to be more than enough these days for an album to be 'wicked cool', as the 'kids' are 'wont' to say these 'days'.

I really dislike the Beatles, and with the exception of some Hendrix and possibly some of the cage/la monte young/terry riley pieces I can honestly say that all the music made from, say, 1910-1980 annoys me intensely. (there's some rather excellent romantic era music out there)

I have never heard any Mozart (or at least not deliberately) and can safely say that I find Bach really boring. I don't mind some baroque but I really don't like any music from the classical era. Does that make me a bad person?

Also, haven't heard anything from Radiohead pre-Kid A. I hear it's more rock oriented, and I happen to like the electronic bent of the later stuff, so I don't know if I'll like it.

I have never heard any Mozart (or at least not deliberately) and can safely say that I find Bach really boring. I don't mind some baroque but I really don't like any music from the classical era. Does that make me a bad person?

Not really.  It just means you are unbalanced.  Although I'm not sure that you should dismiss all classical music, having never heard Mozart.  Also, how can you like late Romantic music until Mahler (essentially) but think Shostakovich (for example) is intensely annoying?  Then again, I am of the opinion that Terry Riley and La Monte Young are terribly annoying and dull so there you are.  Still, their kind of "minimalism" suffers from a lot of the faults of classical music, and is kind of 10 times less interesting.

Recommendations to begin maybe?:
Bach:

• Violin Concerto in a minor;
• Violin and Oboe concerto;
• All the Brandenburg concertos in case you don't know them (no 3 esp)
• The Well-Tempered clavier was probably the greatest achievement in western music until Beethoven's 9th.  Still I suspect you won't like it all that much.  Doesn't mean you are a bad person, just a Bad-Tempered one.

I sometimes think that the quality of Bach is inversely proportional to the number of woodwind instruments involved.  Orchestral-style blending wasn't really something anyone worried about back then (there was no such thing as an orchestra as we know it) so he wasn't very good at it.

Mozart:

• Requiem (especially the Lacrimosa; it's hackneyed but for a reason)
• Ave verum corpus
• Piano Concerto No 24
• Violin Concerto in G
• Sinfonia Concertante in E flat
• Flute and Harp concerto[/i]

Also check out some of the operas; they are a bit more dramatic as you'd expect and he's really the only Germanic composer who's nailed opera in my opinion (say no to Wagner).  The Italians invented it, they knew how to do it, and Mozart just pretty much did what they did, just a lot better.  Don Giovanni and Die Zauberflöte are the best.

Sorry if this seems a bit forward or you're just uninterested but hey it's more fun for me than studying.
