Gigs you've been to and your thoughts.

Phaedra:
I saw Andrew Bird on Saturday night. I CANNOT get over how freaking awesome it was! It's a shame, but I generally find myself being disappointed by live shows - I guess my standards are too high or something, or maybe since my town is fairly isolated a lot of musicians end up bone tired by the time they get here. I always feel bad about this; the bands have put in a huge amount of effort to play for us and the tickets aren't free either...(does anyone else experience this kind of unidentified disappointment after a gig?)

Anyway, Bird just totally blew me away. I think it was pretty much the best concert I've ever attended. His voice is amazing, and his skill with the violin is even moreso; and for those who've heard his records but not seen him live, he can whistle that well live!

Landstander:
Man, I would love to see Sonic Youth with Liars. That sounds like an awesome show.

First big gig I ever went to was David Bowie w/Something for Kate at Rod Laver Area in Melbourne when I was 16 (2004). I love that man to death. He is an amazing entertainer, and even though I didnt know many songs, I still loved it with every ounce of my being.. I didnt like SfK that much at the time because I heard one of their songs skip for an hour at Luna Park, and it drove me bonkers.

Last year I saw Anberlin and Copeland w/Angelas Dish at Corner Hotel in Richmond. First time I'd actually seen Anberlinin a gig setting, instead of the 2 acousitc shows I'd seen Anberlin do. They were amazing, and it was awesome to have the guys remember me from the acoustic shows. I shouldnt have turned down the invitation to go to the casino with them though :P Copeland were beautiful, and Angelas Dish were pretty cool as well. I know them well, since they're local-ish, and they play a lot of gigs in Melbourne.

I also saw Architecture in Helsinki twice in a month. 30th November w/Bridezilla at Billboard and NYE at the Espy, where I spent most of the night in the bandrooms with them and the other bands. Both amazing shows, but I was right in front of the stage at Billboard, and they signed things for me. Coolest thing? a couple of days before NYE, Cameron and I think it was Jamie, made an appearance at a club I was at seeing another band that had supported them before, Soft Tigers. Best thing ever.

I also go to see a lot of bands locally too.

I just got home from Sufjan Stevens and it was freakin' great. The night was almost ruined but when he encored with "Chicago". Luckily he had enough class to not close on his most recognisable song and came back for a few more. My only other gripe was that he played a song supposedly just because a fan asked for it when he saw him in a well known park earlier that day. Sufjan said he never plays that song and had to parctice it just before the show. The main problem was that it was accompanied by a well edited video back drop matching the theme of the song perfectly and he was also accompanied by 5 or so band members who performed a little to well. Maybe i'm wrong? Maybe he is just that awesome and can throw it all together in a few hours? either way, it was a little sus and seemed like an opportunity to name-drop locations.

Looking forward to Arcade Fire supported by Spoon next week. I didn't expect such an impressive support when i got the tickets but it was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunate to all those who got in early for the first night. No spoon for you guys.

It's been a while but I thought I would share it anyhow.
Torche, Akimbo and the Full Nelson. The Full Nelson played first, being the local danish band playing a hybrid of massive trucker rock'n'roll and trash. Really cool set, but they kinda lack a singer though. The drummer was wearing, in jest, a Immortal tank top! Akimbo was amazing as always. They tour so much I have seen them thrice in a year, and that's big for little Denmark. Their drummer was especially cool, since they played the track "I'm A Fucking Ice Giant" off of Elephantine, but he prolonged the already fantastic drum solo and yelped along on the lyrics too. Other than that they got really cool guitar lines and even a couple of days after you can catch yourself humming them. Torche was heavy as fuck. Someone may have heard of Floor, Ryan Pattersons outfit, but this elaborates further on what Floor was trying to do and still has their own style.. Great lineup overall.

Looking forward to Kylesa/Baroness here in a couple of weeks!!
